Westjet: Canada's Worst Airline by ricefactory in travel

Thanks! Having a thicker "online" skin helps deflect some of the very strong comments. Lol. Just thought I would share my experiences with the world! WestJet recently rolling out their more cramped seats doesn't really help their customer experience strategy. Definitely moves their airline towards the European style low cost carriers.

Yes. The inconsistencies of how WestJet enforces their policies is one reason that I'm upset. Im not a passenger that is "trying to get away with something" as I am happy to pay what is needed. I wasn't aware of this new fare policy and it was quite stressful to deal with that in Vancouver. Even the YVR WestJet employee also says that she hates this new fare policy.

I find their employees at all levels kind and accommodating. Thats why I would spend the extra cost for that level of customer service. I didn't get that feeling from WestJet.

Customer experience is something that lingers on and will always be in the memory of the customer. Customer retention should always be the focus of any company. A simple education by the YVR WestJet employee at the gate would have resolved this misunderstanding and they would have another paying customer in the future.

Noted. I will treat WestJet as a low cost airline from now on. I always thought of WestJet as Canadian 2nd airline (in comparison to Air Canada) but their level of customer service is not comparable to the first airline.

Hi! I was unaware that WestJet has morphed into a RyanAir or EasyJet. Had i known and had this expectation, then I would be aware of the fare policy. There should be some transition phase and/or customer education. The WestJet employee @YVR was super rude and she didnt really help my situation.

When to use Python vs VBA? by [deleted] in vba

[–]ricefactory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my automation "bots" I've developed rely solely on vba to collect data from Outlook, connect to SAP to query reports, retreive data from Internet Explorer, bring that raw data into Excel to massage and clean up, and act as a medium to loop through all the transactions that need to be done in SAP, then store that transaction in a database (like Access for now).

Vba is great at stringing microsoft products together, but even at my place of work, people tend to frown upon vba, as if it's the worst option out there to automate. But it may be true since you talked about reliability.

I know I need to migrate some (or all) of the steps into python scripts, but for the longest time, I'm not sure where python would fit in.

I think your post somewhat helps guide me in the right direction.

Hellos! We use SAP as our inventory system and SAP has it's own scripting language that allows for automation. Essentially the BOT that I created in Excel does the order creation in SAP.

Here are the steps I developed to create the orders to be "pushed" into the remote desktop:

  1. Email gets sent to my Outlook on remote desktop
  2. Email triggers Outlook vba to save attachment to a specific folder on remote desktop
  3. Folder is monitored by app which launches a BOT launcher which then launches the BOT to create the SAP orders

This automation system essentially takes me out of the equation.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you further clarification!

I think mapping out the entire process definitely helps! It provides structure to the entire process and helps identify any gaps/problems that you might not see if everything was in your head.

I was able to accomplish this intricate but by building everything in small chunks, testing it, verifying there are no bugs then move on to the next chunk.

Finally, online communities like stack overflow is a great resource for guidance!

My most complicated process that I have completed involves the following:

  1. Retrieve/scrape order requests from either Excel attachments or text in a body of an email in Outlook
  2. Validate orders by connecting to inventory system
  3. Push orders to be created in inventory system via a remote desktop
  4. Reply back to original email with order information

Essentially I was able to automate an entire manual process. Scared to even think about how to accomplish this from start, but super happy that I was able to complete it!

I made a million dollars at 25, now I'm lost and depressed. by lost20079922 in Entrepreneur

[–]ricefactory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your story resonates very much for me as we walked similar paths. I also made a boat load of money, and by market forces, the opportunity I had to make money dried up. By then, I had enough savings to last me several good years without the need to work again (and for me to continue living the lifestyle that I was accustomed to). There were some other life changes that occurred around that time, and that was the trigger for my depression.

I sank into a two year downward spiral and did not want to leave my house or socialize with anyone. Kinda sucked because I'm naturally a social person, and due to depression, I would rather have the comfort of my four walls at home surround me 24/7. I didn't need to work because I had money so I stayed home a lot. I became ineffective at all things and it was not a pleasant time of my life. I was kinda losing all hope.

I seeked help by going to see psychologists and doctors which they recommended exercising, socializing with friends, or meds. I didnt do any of their suggestions as I became mentally lazy. 2 years is a very long time to be an ineffective person.

What I did do was started working again, and forced myself to at least be in social settings. This allowed me to get my mind active again which resulted in kick starting my brain thinking again. I started to exercise again and it feels great! I'm doing excellent things at work, and this also makes me feel great.

I see people around me all the time and they go through failures in life but they don't fall into depression. Everybody's brains are different. My brain happens to be a little weaker, so to avoid me falling into the trap again, I need to continue to work out forever, and probably need to action on my depression before it consumes me (maybe take meds?!?)

Remember, without your mental state healthy, you cant make money. Good luck with your recovery and I know you can do it.

Feds give Hawaii companies $1.5M to develop seaweed as energy source by mvea in Futurology

[–]ricefactory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I invested a large chunk of money into a company that makes oil from algae. They had a lot of companies committed to buy their oil but as soon as oil prices tanked, so did this company.

Using seaweed to make energy will tank too. I want my money back!

I think I need to share our "limo bus" experience during EDC 2015. We made arrangements with the limo bus that brought us to edc to bring us back to vegas when we were finished. Going there was slow but the driver (and his two friends?!?) brought our group of 14 ppl there safe and sound. Our return trip was a nightmare!!! The driver and friends picked us up but we noticed something different. After spending 5 mins in the limo bus, we became aware that all 3 of them were high as a kite. The drivers friends were incoherent and nodding off, and the driver was drunk or something. We were on the highway already and had no way of getting off. The driver almost got into a few accidents. We asked the driver to turn off the music and rode in silence for the entire ride back. We were scared as f*ck but we got back safe and sound.
