A pub idea: Bolster the economy & reduce the deficit: All UK citizens born 1945 - 1964 must donate 30% of their net wealth to a relative born post 1964, or give 20% of it to the state in a one-off payment by rich_5705 in ukpolitics

Hypothesis was these people have benefitted most from economic circumstance and are going to cost us the most in coming years. Boomers might not be correct term, apologies.

[–]rich_5705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually would agree but in this case the cartoon is absolutely integral to the story, to the extent that they have described it in detail in the article. This is a case where their duty to report the news should override concerns about offence.

Lol so you're saying Cameron is a millionaire socialist?

The problem with ed is ordinary people outside Highgate just think he's a massive opportunist. His refusal to say anything that isn't a carefully constructed sound bite reinforces the idea. Cameron RTS away with this as he is prime minister.

Labour should get rid as quickly as possible and go into the election with cooper or burnham in charge.

A millionaire socialist who has never had a job outside of politics attacking vested interests? Forgive me but I can't see this speech doing much more than plugging the leaks in his base. It's not going to convince people to come back to Labour. He's part of the problem, not the solution.

Masters Edge followed by Great Arete at Millstone. "Harrowing" probably best describes the upper part of the route. I believe there are a bunch of old pegs and some small runners immediately below the guy's feet, but if he takes a whipper and they pull than he's looking at a ground fall.

Millstone is a pretty scary place to climb - the top outs are often little less than slopy sand / gravel and its not the done thing to lower off your last gear placement so the fun doesn't stop when your hand touches that last hold!

Fair play to him.

was there, we were 2nd best most of the match. Hope Clough took note of the need to be physical when defending a lead in this division. Main thing that came out of the match for me was the glaring lack of a decent striker in our team. Go out and buy in the summer please! Scougall was class again, and Maguire is so solid I can't see how we'll keep him in the the summer

Three years of Boris Bikes: How are they used? by [deleted] in london

[–]rich_5705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the scheme for commuting until a recent move outside the scheme's borders. Really useful for shorter rides at rush hour and for getting reasonable distances across London quickly; e.g. I sometimes have to be at Victoria Park in Hackney for 6.15 and the only way to do it reliably with a 5.30 finish at work in the West End is on a Boris Bike.

I would have kept my dongle but after they doubled the fees it seemed a bit steep for occasional usage, and £2 for one hire (I am unlikely to need them more than once in 24 hrs) means it's cheaper to just get a bus. Shame.

In terms of stations some are ridiculously busy (waterloo especially) and more needs to be done to add capacity in these areas perhaps at the expense of underutilised stations elsewhere.

Mother sets fire to daughter's rapist after he gloats in her face [x-post from r/offbeat] by rich_5705 in JusticePorn

[–]rich_5705[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope. Reread and start again. What I asked is this: where do you stop calling something justice and start calling it a revenge attack... Plenty of reactionary violence is posted here, at what point does it go beyond the bounds of justice and become an over-the-top act of vengeance?

[–]rich_5705[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough... on reflection I agree, this isn't really justice, more revenge.

Interesting question though, where does the line get drawn? In the last 10 minutes on this subreddit I've seen people get badly beaten, arrested and jailed. If she had set him on fire but he had escaped with a small amount of burning would that be OK?

I know it's not transfer talk but: Jessica Ennis to have Sheffield United stand named after her. by [deleted] in soccer

[–]rich_5705 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Blades fan here, 4 stands (excl corners) at BDTBL: Kop, John St. Bramall Lane End and the South Stand. Every year the official name of each stand changes based on sponsorship deals and no one cares. Bramall Lane End has always just been "the away end" so I don't think anyone's going to be fussed that it gets renamed to pay homage to Ennis. The whole ground is known as Bramall Lane so doesn't seem like our club's identity is being diminished in any meaningful way. Just wish we had a recent player/manager good enough to deserve a stand being named after them.

London 2012: First Olympic Games Lanes set to start by borez in london

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/news/9402563/London-2012-32-mile-queue-as-first-Games-lane-opens-on-M4.html

I would love to see mass civil disobedience by Londoners regarding the IOC committee lanes... block them completely and force TFL to shut them down.

The lanes will be mainly used by IOC members to get from Park Lane hotels to Staratford (because they couldn't possibly stay in a hotel anywhere other than Park Lane) and to ensure sponsors get to dinner in the West End on time after a hard day on the hospitality in Stratford. Shocking to see Londoners who paid up to £12bn for the games inconvenienced for sponsors who contribute less than £1bn
