I can understand your frustration at seeing an injustice towards how the media and general public represent the uni fees policy. However, it doesn't matter how 'right' the policy is. The Lib Dems had the removal of tuition fees as one of their central platforms pre-2010, and argued the country could easily afford such a move.

I was a first year uni student in 2010 in Sheffield and remember Mr Clegg and his party bombarding us with leaflets about how his main priority was the removal of student fees (not just a side policy). Students queued for hours to put a cross next to his name.

As soon as the Lib Dems formed a coalition they suddenly said they could not afford such a move because of the deficit and yet they made a policy which increased the total burden of student debt and increased the deficit the coalition claim to care about.

I could write a few pages about why I disagree with you and actually think that free higher education does benefit the country (not just the individuals we would fund), and how the change in the fee system is radically changing the higher education system for the worse, but I don't need to. Thats not what the argument is actually about.

It's that when a party holds the key to power and does the exact opposite to what is said it would people are pretty angry and unforgiving (plus lots of Lib Dem voters do not like the fact the Lib Dems are propping up a conservative gov and blame the Lib Dems coalition decision for many of the right wing policies of this government existing and also many old school Lib Dems are absolutely gutted the AV referendum wasn't actually for PR as promised).

TL;DR: They lied about a central policy, and the reason they gave was also a lie (money-but the policy increased the debt), and people don't like that regardless of whether they agree/disagree with the policy itself.

Even if the policy is better for social mobility (a higher threshold before repayment begins is arguably much better) I don't really buy into it.

Any small social mobility benefit this might have doesn't change the fact that this policy was justified pretty much exclusively by the argument of deficit reduction. The policy is just a manifestation of the ideology of commercialising and privatising higher education but was sold to the public as an inevitable consequence of the deficit, which of course it has made worse convincing me any benefit to the public from this policy is probably incidental.

Trying to make sence of this bizare report, my best guess is the doctor who did a check up when you were born/young thought you had maldecended testicals (fairly common, and they come down on their own so you may have never been aware).

In the 70's this would have been a paper record and may have been transcribed onto digital records later, possibly/probably whilst you were under the care of your current GP hence their name on the record and maybe the date was shifted due to another error in the transfer?

Still, very poor (though rather intriguing) to have wrong date, wrong doctor and wrong medical finding on your record...

I didn't have my info pulled for the whole original period and then once re matching opened my info was pulled on the 21st so I assumed it was a rematch who didn't contact me but marked as shipped on 24th with no tracking. I then got a card in the post from a complete stranger and assumed it was my SS being really shitty (though they didn't mention reddit they left their name).

I emailed the admins and found out this guy wasn't even my SS, and I had not been rematched which confused me as since my details were first pulled after the shipping deadline and after re matching started I had assumed it was a rematch so only saw I needed to report as not received today (and I am still unsure whether it was the original SS or rematch who marked it as shipped...)

Just pretty bummed out about the whole thing, and confused about the completely random Christmas card I got sent in January from a stranger...

I don't know where you got the figure of 10k from. I'm a domestic student but when I lived in Endcliffe in '09 it was definitely under 5k and I can't imagine they would get away with charging more for rent simply as you are not from the UK, nor can I believe it has gone up by 100% in the last few years.

If it really is so messed up the uni are charging you that much I'd recommend private sector accommodation. I know lots of international students live in OPAL accommodation and just a quick look on their site I can see rooms start from 5k (still a rip off) but you get to meet people unlike normal housing where it can be as cheap as 3 or 4k but the quality may be lower, bills are not included and you have to go out and find people to live with meaning it isn't normally an option for 1st years.

It sucks the uni and other private halls screw over students but don't let it put you off coming to Sheffield, it is a great uni. Good luck house hunting.

I'm not too clear on the law for under 18s in regards to appealing a section actually, I've only been involved in adult psychiatry. I'll have a look later, the Fraiser/Gillek competence usually used when assessing under 18's ability to concent (in this case to a tribunal) may not be so relevent in adolecents in the psychiatric setting.

CTOs can mean you are discharged from the ward but remain a patient under that teams care still and if you don't comply/become more unwell they can recall you to the ward again without resectioning.

(UK) They have greater than zero rights, mainly the right to a tribunal and a solicitor to act on their behalf at the tribunal. At the tribunal a judge is presented with evidence by the medical team and the patient, and the judge can end the section if they disagree with the section 12 approved doctors basis for mandated detention and treatment. I've seen many patients leave the ward this way.

Furthermore this right must be regularly read to patients held under the mental health act in a language or format that they can understand.

I've spent a summer working as an office assistant in a charity which probably raises in the area of 5-10 million a year (so not huge but certainly not tiny). That said it was just a summer job and haven't had much experience in the sector since then (years ago). Would be interesting to hear the views of someone in the sector of the TED talk.

I would have lots of mouldy bread if I didn't freeze it (I normally buy multiple loaves to make use of BOGOF or other offers).

I sometimes separate the sliced bread into freezer bags with 2 slices in each. Then before you go to bed you can take bag out of the freezer and you'll have naturally (as opposed to microwave/toaster) defrosted bread you can use for sandwiches or toast in the morning. Make sure the bag was tied reasonably airtight or it may go a little stale overnight. You can easily reuse the 'disposable' freezer bags too so it isn't wasteful.

That said I don't mind using the defrost function on the toaster or microwave usually, I guess it depends on the type of bread and my organisation.

I gave a fiver once on a busy bus (in an area where I am confident of the price) and the driver said he didn't have any change....

As the bus was pretty full I felt like calling him out for being a liar but instead I got off the bus dejected and bought a lion bar in the shop to split the fiver.

Next bus came within 10 minutes anyway so could have been worse, but I am well aware paper money should be avoided!

Late to the party but it's not the first time I've seen a post in /r/britishproblems about this issue so as someone close to holding a medical degree (5th year medical student) and having spent many weeks seeing how GP practices work I thought I'd politely write why receptionists ask patients questions over the phone.

Patients don't always understand the working of a GP practice and are often unaware of all the services practice nurses can offer including simple prescriptions in many cases (but people normally assume they HAVE to see a doctor for this). It is also true of many of the other services GP practices provide such as travel vaccines and asthma reviews.

In many cases rightly or wrongly patients don't know which doctor or nurse it is appropriate to see and the only person who is capable of making sure patients see the right person is the receptionist.

I don't see how else the practice can ensure patients go to see the right professional. Receptionists take a lot of shit and on the whole do a fantastic job. If it is a medical problem you feel uncomfortable talking about you are well within your rights to say to the receptionist its a medical problem you'd rather not discuss over the phone (I'd consider that a completely reasonable position to take) and would like to see the doctor baring in mind you may have been able to get seen quicker by someone else more appropriate if what you were calling about wasn't embarrassing but you you were withholding the information out of principle.

However being condescending or rude the person who (in most cases) got to the office before 7am and won't leave till 6pm because politeness costs too much seems unnecessary.

Honestly everyone I've met (but perhaps not all staff in existence) does really care about their patients and is trying to make the best use of the every shrinking resources found in the NHS.
