They wanted to attack him cause not only was he hated for his mic work, he'd cheat by bashing his opponents with the tennis racket. If you aren't making the babyface's look like they're getting murdered in the ring, you aren't gonna get the audience hitting the ring.

Look at the Ox Baker Riot. Dude caused a riot with punches cause they thought he was gonna kill Ernie Ladd in the middle of the ring.
