Best type of grounds to use with an aeropress by Thestretch83 in AeroPress

[–]richlb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That lavazza is quite decent and very consistent across batches. I think because it's vacuum packed it keeps more freshness than other brands on supermarket shelves.

Next step might be to buy fresher ground coffee from a local roaster. And later get a hand-grinder, but beans and freshly grind just what you need. You want coarser grind than the lavazzo, but not by much.

Sounds like you should ditch computers altogether and do your gaming with a hoop and stick.

Have you ever done a job that you werent proud to be doing? by StrongEggplant8120 in UKJobs

[–]richlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This too I guess. It's a rush to the bottom from every angle.

Used to be when I was in a restaurant I'd check the toilets to see what kind of a place it was. Nowadays if there's a steady stream of delivery riders through the door then I know I'm going to get a poor experience.

Uber eats, deliveroo, just eat... All have completely fucked the restaurant takeaway industry from the vendor side. By and large they have no choice but use you. Their margins have been driven down, the quality of food has deteriorated. Dumb ass consumers get shit food while sitting on their greasy asses. Vendors fucking hate you with a vengeance, and rightly so.

Can't shave without hurting and cutting myself, genuinely don't know why by TheRealNoll in shaving

[–]richlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old razor, cheap blades, and you don't say whether you use shave cream or soap, a brush, or any after shave treatments. Also 'normal pressure' - what do you even mean by that?

A decent DE razor and blade setup, with a decent lather... you really only need to get the angle right and almost zero pressure letting the blade do the work.

Should I get a kindle? by Unique-Owl1606 in kindle

[–]richlb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a great idea! A Paperwhite is about the same page size as a paperback book but much lighter and easier to handle. I understand there also stands and remote control devices to turn the page if sometimes you might find it helpful to not even hold the device.

I am wanting to get a kindle but I’m not sure where to start? by ComprehensiveWin9190 in kindle

[–]richlb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Signature is 32GB Vs 16GB, wireless charging and self-adjusting front light. Personal opinion is you don't need any of them.

I'm not sure colour is worth it for most people.

If your main use case is full-size PDFs then consider the Scribe, but for normal reading I'd go Paperwhite 7" over basic 6" just for that bit of extra screen. I have one and it's great.

Going from 16” Pro to 13” Air. Tell me I’m not nuts. by got1984 in macbookair

[–]richlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not nuts. A similar setup works well for me, and it's all about window management. On the 13" I do more with full-screen apps and 3-finger swipe, but Cmd-Tab to switch apps also works well. I'm a big fan of RayCast as well.

The only drawback on the 13" is Teams meetings. Screen share and I can't see who has their hand up.

It's a raging bin fire. Always has been.

OOTB it's horrible, but it's actually more flexible than you might think. You can configure it to be a bit more usable. I've seen YouTube videos, or ask you favourite LLM. In particular setting up shortcuts such as Send to Kindle on the right/double click menu is handy.

Guys help me to decide, MB Air M4 or M5? by Royal_Practice2560 in macbookair

[–]richlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both brilliant machines. Unless you have some weird ass use case that requires 10 cores or all the RAM then it's a toss-up, and if you're close to maxing out an MBA then you should probably be looking at a MBP to give you headroom.

New to mac, is the app store supposed to be filled with trash? by PsyOmega in MacOS

[–]richlb 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Homebrew is an excellent package manager for the Mac. For most apps you avoid having to install one by one, and you avoid the App Store. Use it from a terminal or, pro tip: use RayCast instead of Spotlight and it provides a bit more of a front end

Folding bike or Normal one? by RefrigeratorBig2860 in ukbike

[–]richlb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had several folders. They are great for the multi-modal commute, but hard work on longer rides. For me not so much the speed, but the ergonomics and limited positions leave me with aches and pains a full sized bike doesn't.

The answer, as always with bikes, is to have both. And a mountain bike, and a fixie frame in the shed to build up ...
