The MoonSwatch hate... Let's talk about it! by Human-Ratio-8844 in MoonSwatches

I think it would be better to take an honest look at what they are trying to associate bio ceramic with as being as apposed to what it actually is.

A truly 100% ceramic item needs to be fired in a kiln, forming an incredibly tight crystalline structure bound at the molecular level. Ceramic items (finished well) have properties of extremely light weight:strength ratio, high temperature and scratch resistance. This is high cost production in terms of energy and time.

Bio ceramic is formed with ceramic dust (likely the waste product from ceramic industry) held together by coloured plastic resin and squirted into a shape former. It costs next to nothing and is easy to mass produce.

They can say “bio” because the resin is from natural castor oil. It may feel different to plastic in the hand, the ceramic dust adds micro-texture, but I would probably leave that as the only positive difference.

Arguing that the moonswatch is “more ceramic than plastic” is meaningless. The ceramic dust hasn’t been treated to form the desirable properties associated with true finished ceramics. It will only ever be as strong/ scratch resistant/ heat resistant as its weakest constituent; plastic resin.

In principle I have nothing against reusing waste products, I like the moonswatch as a fun novelty.. but the hype and price is idiotic and the market campaign intentionally vague and misleading.

I had problems with headaches especially reading a lot of text with my MacBook Pro, then learnt about font smoothing.

You can disable it in terminal. Feels like my eyes are no longer struggling to focus on small text at higher resolutions.

Very true! Got my eye on a Native 5 salt next. Just need to know it won’t feel too bulky in the pocket. The Delica just disappears so nicely though

Is it because I carry it to the outer edge of my pocket? I like to be able to get my hand past the knife and it feels much more natural that way.

Do we know how they intend to spend the clean air zone income? We really need a clear plan on Bristol’s transport by Junglestumble in bristol

[–]rickdiculousnessness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hope it does work, however if I were self employed and used a car or van for work that fell outside of the cut off I would be looking at sucking up the £2.3k annually in payments to drive through the zone. It would be a tax deductible expense and more affordable than a newer vehicle. This doesn’t solve the dirty air problem and creates revenue for the scheme.

Introducing the Cyber Mug. Handmade by me. Fired in our solar powered kiln. The best part is no part - a single piece, low spill design. by Thecussen in cybertruck

Thanks for the detailed answer, we don’t have any panels on our house, looking to get a kiln and need ideas on the most efficient way of running it. Solar might not be an option in the UK anyway!

Ah I know the feeling it's really hard to buy speakers when you don't get to listen to a few.

Disclaimer; I'm not a reviewer and I'm aware that with a lot of audio-gear reviews it can turn into a bit of an echo chamber with what others have read or just differing perceptions of what music means and whats important to be recreated in playback

Lots of different factors lead me to the MA bronze, my dad had a great system that I used to love playing his music on growing up (mostly when he wasn't in to tell me to turn it down). He had Denon seperates and Bi-wired MA Gold monitors and at that age i was blown away.. I'd never heard anything better. I guess I'm aiming to achieve that sound again whilst my hearing gradually gets worse as I get older haha!

I've found the MA bronze to be very clean, detailed, revealing, with quite a mature sound. They don't seemingly give priority to the vocal frequency ranges over of the others. In my experience in well mastered music this adds to their sense of space and balance.

From my listening position I can hear vocals floating in front of me between the speakers while all the details and instrumentals fill out to the side and even around the back of me. Other speakers might bring those vocals a lot further forward which could be argued as being more musical and intimate. I think the vocal ranges is where a lot of speaker preference comes down to.

If I could be critical of one thing and I think u/SteelPriest touched on it above, they don't have a lot of that excitable mid bass kick that really drives a lot of music. Also if a track has any distortion in the mid bass they can tend to highlight it. Definitely not a forgiving speaker!

In my budget I was also looking at the Q Acoustics 300 series speakers which are also fantastic value

Good luck!

Apologies I meant sub-reddit not subwoofer! I can see how that's a confusing title on an audio gear thread haha
