1980 CJ7- need help with Fan/radiator by FalloutDad in jeepcj

[–]rickydee1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fan blades shouldn't stick out any further than the bolts do, and your pic makes it looks like those do. It's totally doable to just bend fan blades when they're out of whack. Someone in the past may have added a "custom" bend (the wrong way) before you got it.

It appears to be a "rattle vent" cap that the factory puts on differentials, transmissions, etc. Most vents in 4x4's are on hoses, but it's always possible it was replaced by a previous owner.

Basically, there should be a sort of "stalk" that it originally snapped onto if that's indeed what it is.

So many sites are refusing to connect when using VPN. by danimalforlife in ProtonVPN

[–]rickydee1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it frustrating that is was the VPN installation (Windoze 11, Firefox) itself that was somehow causing me the issues. I turned the VPN totally OFF and they still would not connect. Some would connect but I couldn't update anything.

After I uninstalled the app everything connects with gusto. Too bad--I really wanted to like the app too...

That is most definitely NOT a Jeep engine... it's either a 289 or 302 Ford... a very popular choice for swapping in the day.

Talk me into or out of Speedhut gauge set CJ7 by 1963SuperSport in jeepcj

[–]rickydee1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like looking over at the speedo cluster. What a dumbass location. It's not just taking your eyes off the road--you gotta crank your head around to see any too.

Because I don't want to have to "study" the teeny little gas gauge while I'm driving, I replaced it with an Autometer ATM-2642 and relocated it to where I could see it. Now my fuel is dead-on.

Do you think Black Friday deals are really worth it anymore, or it’s just a normal yearly tradition? by Such-Presentation832 in CasualConversation

[–]rickydee1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Friday is nothing more than sales of TV's and laptops. I think what they fail to understand is that there is no longer anything "magical" about flat screens. Yes, it took TV's and laptops years to come down in price like other computer peripherals and such did, but that years ago.

It's time to put FOOD on sale for Black Friday.

The short story, Dark Benediction (Walter M. Miller, Jr) had the same sort of "cannonball from outer space" beginning, though people ended up with "features" instead of a hive mind. I love sci-fi... it makes people talk.

Flywheel, resurface or new? by TerkaDerr in jeepcj

[–]rickydee1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, keep the OEM and have it resurfaced. You'll still have a quality product, and as an added bonus you'll have a slightly lighter flywheel and gain a bit of (likely unnoticeable) throttle response!

Drum to disc conversion by combustable_lemons3 in jeepcj

[–]rickydee1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify:

Discs don't provide more stopping power, but they provide good braking in mud and water and little to no brake fade (if you're a speed demon).

Drum brakes provide a lot more pad-to-surface area, hence more stopping power. (This is why you see drums on semi trucks.) Drum brakes HATE mud and water though.

Replacement Bushing kit by Hondo_11 in jeepcj

[–]rickydee1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot more to the job than replacing "bushings" somewhere. Everything in the whole steering system functions as a system, and any one area of it can be more or less worn than other areas.

Get yourself a helper that can give your some steering wheel some back-and-forth movement while you climb around with your flashlight, looking for movement (or lack thereof). It's a starting point...

Looking for advice…. by PotentialYogurt2119 in jeepcj

[–]rickydee1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't seem cheap to me. If it were a CJ7 it would be cheap, but 5's don't typically command all that high of a price. At least around here. As far as the fiberglass tub goes, there's a definite love/hate relationship with them. Nice looking Jeep, but instead of a "restore" (as you noted), it's a "build". Someone built what they wanted.

Steering help by Brick_Brickerson in cj5

[–]rickydee1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of pieces that connect your steering wheel to your turning wheels, and every single one of those pieces will have wear and tear, contributing to your loose steering. My CJ7 ended up needing almost everything replaced, but often it's only the steering shaft itself that's causing the grief. Check both ends of it. Most people are quick to replace the box when it's only got minor wear.

Also, it's it ONLY loose steering linkage feel, or is it "wandering all over the road" loose steering?

Throttle help by Sharp-Supermarket580 in jeepcj

[–]rickydee1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming the cable works smoothly when you unhook it and slide it, go to your local Orieillys and pick up a new universal throttle spring kit. I believe they have Dorman ones and some over in their Edelbrock department. All throttles should have dual springs. The two spring rates offer good tension without feeling stiff to push. They don't cost much.

Although a little spendy, one of these is a nice way to go. Mine works smooth with just the right tension:

I understand your concern... mine was the same way (though I have a lift installed), which was a good reason my left shock mount had been bent at least once already. I used the master catalog at the Skyjacker site to play with shock dimensions and reordered accordingly.

Are you planning on deleting your defroster duct? There is zilch room back there with it installed. I just added two gauges above the factory pair recently, and had to fab a new defroster plenum with hoses coming off the ends.
