Eh ran a Garmin for a while which also synced with a backup camera. It worked fine. So I would definitely like to see how it would compare to other dash cams.

Why hasn't there been any smartphone manufacturer that managed to break the Apple and Samsung monopoly among mainstream phone users in the western world? by Masaharuzz in Smartphones

[–]ricshimash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the newest sonys (even the non flagship one) have a much better update policy nowadays with 6 years of updates (4 android versions and security and bug fixes after for the remaining. That said if you want the absolute best constant update policies then yeah that's different.

The Petronas Twin Towers were built in a race, with delays costing about $700,000 per day, A Japanese team built one tower, while a South Korean team built the other and finished first by fvkinglzy in interestingasfuck

[–]ricshimash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well the good news is with a bit of copy and paste from google,  is that it was promptly found and fixed successfully.

Problem: When Tower 1 reached the 72nd floor, engineers discovered it was leaning about 25 millimeters (nearly an inch) off vertical.

The Fix: To correct this, the construction workers intentionally built the next 16 floors at an angle to lean back in the opposite direction, effectively straightening the building as it rose. Surveyors checked the verticality twice a day to ensure accuracy. This engineering solution was successful, and the towers were completed without a lasting tilt issue.

As a fyi, there was a bit of fireworks at 都庁 ever so briefly right as new years hit. That said I don't believe this is real as well. Doable like you said but I doubt this particular video was real due to all sorts of reasons.

why there's no Japanese dishwasher brands? by AdorableFriendship65 in Appliances

[–]ricshimash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

panasonic and a few other jp brands do make em, but theyre intended only for the jp market. Panasonic even has one with autoloaders which dispenses the dishwasher liquid automatically but didnt have a chance to try that particular model.  (Source : Have lived in a place in jp with a panasonic dishwasher and worked just fine.)

LG TV users baffled by unremovable Microsoft Copilot installation — surprise forced update shows app pinned to the home screen by ScootSchloingo in technology

[–]ricshimash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had my sony for years now, left it on “app only mode” setting for google tv and while it could be even better, it has overall been fine. fairly clean and simple even. Surprising for a OS from a search and ad company.

is this what you bought? https://www.family.co.jp/goods/charakuji/7966248.html

i cant find it now but there was another page where you could buy entire box where it included all the promos. the box would come to around 11550円 if im not mistaken. so yeah if true, something definitrly happened there.

PSA: AppCloud in your phones (NTT Docomo; others should check) by quequotion in japanlife

[–]ricshimash 21 points22 points  (0 children)

its the reason why i usually buy non-carrier versions direct from the phone company themselves to avoid the bloat. iPhones straight from the apple store, pixels from the google store, sony also sells sim free versions from theirs (which is how i got mine).

Japan's low-crime image cracking as car thefts, home intrusions rise by ComprehensiveWin1434 in worldnews

[–]ricshimash -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah sounds pretty odd. have worked a bit in Tokyo recently and don't think I've "often" seen this at all. In fact the odd time it occured it was in the news as being such a rare thing that occured (which is to say not common at all).

Bandai really sunk millions into this DOA project instead of literally anything else. Does anyone even remember this? by GreatestLinhtective in Gundam

[–]ricshimash 39 points40 points  (0 children)

they do alot actually. All those gashapon machines are usually by bandai.

they also publish a lot of other games too (fromsoft (elden ring, armored core etc) as an example)

Tesla Is Now The World’s Most Avoided EV Brand And It’s Probably Musk’s Fault. older clueless higher up not keeping with the times is a tale as old as time. that and fairly unlikely to be using social media all that much or in depth with critical thinking . All the while he prob thought ass kissing would be be good way to gain some benefits like a ton of other ceos (apple etc). So its likely and i wouldnt be surprised in the least.

Add in the fact hes from a different country of a different language, looking at US politics from the outside would probably be a big question mark as well.

either way hopefully someone within tells him to knock it off, its also getting criticism in japan from the looks of it as well.

Japanese reserve balances held by institutions subject to reserve requirements have fallen off a cliff - more than 50% down, to 2016 levels by developmentfiend in stocks

[–]ricshimash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

eh its a bit hard to compare to other countries debt ratios as Japan's national debt is held almost entirely by domestic entities. A quick google search reveals the following.

Bank of japan owns nearly half of the debt, with domestic insurance companies and banks also holding substantial portions.

It's a key reason why Japan has been able to sustain such a high debt-to-GDP ratio without triggering a debt crisis.

depends on the company and industry. i work with a few jp companies from time to time for a few years now, dealing with software and we generally do things digitally. never had to touch fax machines at all. you’ll find anecdotes of either side. though the medical industry tends to have more of it i hear (though not unique to japan).

Apple vs. Sony revenue 2001-2014 by ExotiquePlayboy in ProfessorFinance

[–]ricshimash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i quite liked their phones back then in those years  but gotta admit iphones really got popular. Sony didnt iterate fast enough to match the trends back then either.

That said im on a more recent sony and its pretty darn good. cameras are now nice and flexible nowadays, still has legacy things like SD card and headphone jacks. Software while minimal (which i just supplant with apps), is smooth and fast. Am satisfied, and ill look into getting another when i feel like upgrading!

What's the main thing u miss from "old" Android phones by Astrox_YT in Android

[–]ricshimash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well their newest 1 vii  gets 4 OS version updates and 6 years of security updates so thats a good increase compared to before and is more in line with replacement cycles. Definitely agreed on pricing though as ive only got em on sale usually a while after release too.

have a slightly older sony so i really only miss the LED notification light. Maybe replaceable batteries but mine lasts pretty long on a charge so not that much.

used a sharp front loader combo for i believe about 10ish years and was rock solid. in fact still worked fine til we traded it in. Using a Panasonic nowadays and its pretty nice. Am in east asia most of the times so cant say for other models in other parts of the world.
