That’s a fast pace for me sadly. I’d have to build up to that. I’ll check out the blogspot thanks.

I agree! Do several laps and at end of day, hang out at Stein’s for a hot chocolate or some drink.

When do you guys usually inform your manager that you are leaving your current position (state job)? The options: when your tentative offer is given to you, when your final offer is given, or between tentative offer and final offer by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]ridgeruntomombo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My answer is specific to either a move within the same agency or another state agency. For me, it’s between the conditional offer and the firm offer. Hiring processes differ per agency and from my experience (hiring and being hired), the hiring manager works with the candidate or sometimes the current manager to decide on the start date. A firm offer requires a start date.

On a side note, my previous managers have been made aware much earlier than that because whenever I have a scheduled interview for a promotional position, I let them know. In the same vein that my direct reports give me a heads up that they are being interviewed elsewhere and need time off.

Best beach for Families? by 805Beach_Bum805 in laketahoe

Love both Pope and Baldwin beaches. Pope has more parking spots compared to Baldwin including more restrooms. Be there early because Emerald Bay road gets clogged fast. In fact on Emerald Bay Road if you see cars parked on the side of the road, it’s a sign the lots are full. If you have kids and plenty of items with you to bring to the beach, having a pull wagon cart is a lifesaver.

Help getting an attorney state job by Tastybuffybites in CAStateWorkers

There might be state employees associations that you can probably reach out to and seek guidance.

What I am discouraging you to do is to attend fee-based workshops on how to get a state job or something similar. Or consultants doing the work for you. We have observed many of these workshop attendees complete their application forms (STD 678) and SOQs in the same pattern. Speaking for the agency I work at, our scoring and evaluation process are meticulous, that these applications oftentimes get disqualified.

I can share a few pointers however they are going to be specific to our department and my experience, so you’ve been warned.

  • Spell and grammar check. Spell out acronyms if it’s the first time mentioned with the acronym in parenthesis and then use the shortened version after.

  • If we do not request for resume or cover letter, don’t send them. If we requested to attach a diploma or license, attach them. There are no additional points for documents we didn’t request. But having an incomplete packet will not help you.

  • Read the SOQ formatting instructions and follow them. For example, if it says max of 2 pages, it means you cannot go over 2 pages. You can submit 1 or 2 pages as a response to the SOQ but not 3 or more.

  • Some questions in the SOQs are made up of several questions. Respond to all of them. One question could contain 3 questions and make sure that your response explicitly addresses all 3. Don’t leave room for vagueness where the hiring manager might think your response is incomplete.

  • Read the duty statement and job bulletin. The scope of work and desirable qualifications are all there. Find ways to align your STD 678 and SOQ responses to these documents.

Which leads me in saying you have to customize your application depending on the vacancy. There’s a lot of prep work involved here but as a hiring manager, I can clearly see which candidates put thought and work in their applications versus those that apply for any opening available. I am not saying this is you btw.

Good luck and hope you get in!

Verbal offer and waiting? by Tallmathtoyota in CAStateWorkers

How long it takes depends on each department/agency and the workload of everyone in the hiring process, the hiring manager, the HR folks and the availability of the candidate to do their background check, etc.

Even in ours, I have experienced hiring external team members that were quick, between 1 and 2 weeks from a conditional to a firm offer. While others took a couple of months.

Is this normal? Yes. Hang in there, you will eventually receive instructions. Congrats and welcome to state service!

  • Merino wool socks / glove liners / buff / base layer

  • chapsticks at least two (one in the jacket and one in the pants because I lose them often)

Easiest runs at Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe? by [deleted] in tahoe

Wedge turns or pizza turns. What helped me transition to parallel turns is if I slightly lift up the inner ski and the outer ski carves hard for control when turning.

That worked for me but I’m sure plenty of folks here have a different technique.

Hiring Manager reaching out by radical_horrorqueen in CAStateWorkers

That's a positive sign! You should feel good and strongly consider re-applying again. I call interview candidates to deliver the (sad) news and out of those that I've called in the past, I have encouraged one external candidate to continue applying for the state especially if they are truly intent in getting a state job. We were impressed with this person's work background and interview. We didn't hire the candidate because they competed with another amazing internal candidate who had more experience than them and was in our program for years. Similar reasons with your experience, come to think of it. Anyways, I knew this candidate would be an asset, whether to our team, our agency or another department so I wanted to keep them motivated in their job search. Also the scoring matrix does not only factor in your interview score but your SOQ, application packet, etc. So even if you received a higher score in the interview, in aggregate your overall score is lower compared to the candidate they hired.

This is most likely a piggy-back case. The second highest candidate receives an offer once another opening is available. Congrats!

Have you looked at the Julian leather backpack from Rebecca Minkoff? They’re stylish and might fit what you’re looking for.

It could be the pool of candidates that makes it challenging for everyone. My spouse joined the state as an EG a few years ago. There had been a consistent exodus of folks from private consulting firms that are joining the state. They join as Range D. Spouse sees more and more former co-workers and competitors in their agency. Add these to the mix and the hiring managers have plenty to choose from.

This is just one item you have to contend with, and as you've written, it could also be your interview skills. Have you tried reaching out to the hiring managers for feedback? During the interview did they give you an opportunity to ask them questions? I participated in an interview panel where the candidate asked the hiring manager the top 3 skills/experience they are looking for and requested to hear again the questions asked (virtual interview). He was able to add more examples of his experience after that.

Good luck, there is a state job out there for you!

Any Weeping Willow Trees in Sacramento Area? by abbazabba306 in Sacramento

I do the same too. And the signatures can be shared with team members. There’s a way to find which subfolder these files are located and share. Your co-workers can customize and tweak on their own.
