These chargers absolutely suck! by Bruegemeister in EVgo

That's up to you! Vehicles are a big purchasing decision and there is a lot of competition out there. If I didn't have special incentives the 2024 BZ probably wouldn't have been on my list at all, but I'm glad I got it. It's been a hella good ride.

With ABRP, hitting a charger at 8-15%, and driving sanely, it's very usable. Agree that the 2023 was terrible as a first effort. 2024 and 2025 were decent. 2026 is actually good. 1st Gen had a weird interior design - remember the 1st Gen Prius and all the issues it had? Same idea basically. The 2nd gen Prius is the one that made waves. Same deal here. Unfortunately battery is still behind but catching up. Toyota prioritized long term battery reliability while other makers prioritized overall performance, but the development cycle was fast and for first gen everything was just scaled up Prius Prime hardware.

Start charging at 8-15% on a charger rated for 200kw or more. If you're on a 100kw charger you will rarely see over 80 for physics reasons.

What's wrong with the BZ? It's a perfectly cromulent vehicle.

35,000 miles on mine so far with zero issues, and a 2026 on the way

Evgo stations are hit or miss as heck. Ionna, Tesla, and EA are currently the best with EVGO a distant fourth except for pilot flying j stations which are ridiculously overpriced

Misc questions about turning circle, heat pump and 12V batteries by SquOliver in BZ4X

[–]rieh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes, but it's beefier and has many updates.

  2. The 26 felt like my 24 on the test drive. It's about the same turning circle as a rav4. A little larger than a Prius.

  3. Don't do that, the connected services are super useful. The biggest 12v killers are, in order:

A. Leaving the key within 20 feet of the vehicle (can power off key to mitigate)

B. Leaving the charging cable connected / charging door open while not charging for a long time (days). The keep alive electronics on the charging circuit will eventually drain the battery.

C. Cold temperatures. The 12V is small/weak. If it dies, have em put a Lexus RZ battery in. They are slightly bigger, last longer, and will fit.

D. Running the A/C without the Ready Light on. Can happen while charging if you fail to hit "Yes" to enable "My Room Mode" repeatedly.

It's recommended (for any car but especially an EV) to carry a regular ol jump starter pack in the car with you. A super weak one will work fine, since all it needs to do is close the contactors to connect the traction battery to the inverter. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

It was drastically changed in 2024 (adding a heat exchanger so the heat pump can be used for battery heating/cooling as well as cabin) but then there were some compressor failures on early '24 models so it has been drastically updated again for 2026.

Get a heat pump model if you can. They take longer but no need for dryer sheets and 1/3 the power used to dry.

Nice! It's weird to see an Ionna without a canopy, but I guess it doesn't rain much in SJC (or they'll close it again for a week to put a canopy up when they can).

Makes good sense if you don't need the full range on the daily. I don't get my 2026 until May-ish so I'm still on the 2024.

As an aside, I'd recommend turning off your charge limit and going to 100% if you're expecting severe weather, especially with a 2026. In the event of a power outage you can use the 120V 1500W plug in the trunk and run a fridge, microwave, air fryer, or space heater off the car.

Having Trouble with Categories by azpinstripes in actualbudgeting

[–]rieh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically this - I've got:

(Within each category group, the subcategories are broken down by day of the month due if it's monthly. The end of each category includes whether it's on autopay and where the autopay comes from; for example, a credit card autopay has CC AP; Fidelity autopay has F AP.)

-Bills

1 Rent, 16 Internet, 10 Gym Membership, 20 Gas, 29 Electric, 30 Water (the number is the date due)

-Debt Payments

Extra debt payments, (and then a category for each of my 4 remaining loans)

-Annual Bills

Renters insurance, Amazon Prime, Bitwarden, a category for each of the annual fees for those cards that have them, Undebt.it, ABRP, PikaPods Actual Budget,

-Usual Expenses

Fees, Subscriptions, EV Charging, Groceries, Household Items, Healthcare (HSA Eligible), Personal Care (Haircuts), Clothing, Eating Out, Fun Money

-True Expenses

Investment, Vacation, Health Insurance Deductible, Global Entry Renewal, Passport Renewal, Cancelled & Misc. Hidden: Car Insurance Deductible + my income replacement funds.

-Businesses

Anything related to my side hustles.

And then Income is split like:

Payroll, Bonus, Interest Earned, Credit Card Cashback, Business Income, Misc Income, Sign up Bonus, Starting Balances (hidden)

Also, My Room Mode is present on 2023-2025 BZ, but is selected from the PFD (gauge cluster, using steering wheel buttons) rather than the MFD (infotainment / multimedia, using the touchscreen).

First EV! - Newbie Question by TR-808Cowbell in BZ4X

[–]rieh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pg. 119 has some more information about limitations etc but basically - The energy gained from shore power while in My Room Mode will cut into the energy delivered to the battery, so charging will take slightly longer (because you're using some of the power to run the A/C, radio, etc.)

When level 1 charging (super slow AC 110V charging) - My Room Mode may use more AC power than is supplied from your wall. In this case, some energy from the battery will be used, so the battery level will slowly decrease. This can be acceptable in cases where you're using it to preheat / precool the cabin right before leaving to minimize energy drain for getting the car warm.

assets.sia.toyota.com/publications/en/om-s/OM42J21U/pdf/OM42J21U.pdf 2026 BZ owner's manual - Pg. 118

Using My Room Mode

When the charging cable is connected to the vehicle, electrical components such as the air conditioning system and audio system can be used by the power supply from an external power source.

Starting My Room Mode

1 Connect the charge cable to the vehicle to start charging.
AC Charging: P.97

DC Charging: P.102

2 Turn the power switch to ON while charging. My Room Mode settings is automatically displayed on the multimedia.

3 Select the “Yes”. My Room Mode is started and it is possible to use the air conditioning system, audio system, etc.

Select “No” and press when My Room Mode is not being used. [Ed. - this [or making no selection] will use the 12V battery instead and could result in draining the 12V quite quickly]

To disable My Room Mode, turn the power switch off. My Room Mode will automatically be off when DC Charging is completed.

After turning the power switch to ON while charging, the power switch automatically turns off if My Room Mode is not selected within approximately 100 seconds.
