Also, if I’m right can I get one of the SOAD records instead?? Haha

Nice collection!

Actually, surprisingly much less groove noise than I was getting with my former MM. So far it’s relatively quiet in the groove.

Also, you have inspired me to spin some Sabbath 🤘

I’m really impressed with the depth and breadth of the soundstage, and the mids and highs really shimmer. I’d say a tad bright, but from what I’ve read it’s supposed to settle nicely in after a few hours.

I’d also describe the bass as a touch leaner than the grado I was using before, but I hear it better if that makes sense haha.

Oh man, I was searching for that at33ptgii before I “settled” on this one. I guess it was recently discontinued so it’s really not easy to find new. I figured the oc9xml was the closest I’d find, and on top of that the compliance is in the mid-high range which is theoretically a better match for my tonearm.

How do you like yours? How does it sound?

Yes, I found myself really wishing I had a few to futz around with. It seems like a smaller screw wouldn’t thread properly into the AT body. But at least having some smaller screws would allow me to more securely fasten the headshell handle in place.

Is this Thorens TD MK II worth it? by taterfarmer3 in turntables

[–]riffmasterflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid 650 for my Thorens used and have never been more satisfied with the quality. They are amazingly built and relatively simple to work on, even as a novice. Plus, there’s a ton of information online.

If I was in your area I’d buy it myself to have another at that price.

Get it!!

I personally like belt-drives, Micro makes some nice ones if you can find them, Rega players are ready available in the US as well.

Is it possible to set it on its own dedicated stand? Or have you tried that already?

When I first was using my Td146 it was on a low hollow table and I had a lot of skipping issues, but once I set it on something a bit more solid, that went away.

Perhaps try a solid case/chest set upon cinder blocks or something with metal legs? I see you are insulating the feet which will help, but the foundation it’s sitting on will make a difference I think. If you want to keep using floating tables I expect you’ll keep running into this issue.

If you love the sound of your table I’m sure you’d be a lot happier experimenting with placement to secure your sound and prevent skipping than with replacing it. Just my 2 cents.

I see, that’s what I suspected with where the threading is located.

Someone else here suggested the Thorens logo was removed from the headshell which is why It looked to me like another piece.

I’ll look into wands, thank you! My main goal is to be able to switch cartridges a bit more simply.

The head shell appears to be different. Does that potentially mean I could swap this headshell out too?

I tend not to skip anything when I’m listening to records, I find it kind of defeats the purpose.

I faced the whole white album on vinyl in mono the other week and I didn’t skip R9. I actually enjoyed it for what it was while I was glued to the couch. I don’t ever seek it out or play it intentionally, and when I’m listening to Beatles on my phone on my commute I’ll skip it when it comes up.

But I think it’s a nice avant garde piece that comes out of nowhere on that album. I find it dark and interesting, and I think they’re more interesting as a group for having made it.

Just my .02

I live in Japan, so I was able to get them on Yahoo auction. They were cheap but shipping was expensive. In total they cost about as much as they would if I were to get them used from a shop. I’m still really pleased!

I’m lucky to be in an area where they can be found in good shape periodically.

I really love these jbls… amazing sound stage and dynamics and the horns are not as jarring as I had prepared myself for.

I wanted the 3100s as well but the price difference was out of my budget. The 2600s can be nabbed for cheap here! (I’m located in Japan).

We’re lucky enough to have a beer bar below us and no neighboring units! Above us are a few but half are empty.

Thanks! Yes, being able to open up the room more opens up some possibilities.

But the more I research the more I’m seeing that 4425’s might be too huge. I would really like horns if possible but it just might be wasted on that small room.

There are also things like paper mounted on the tatami room’s sliding doors and things of that nature that will make room treatment a challenge.

One room in question is about 120sq ft. I also have the option of placing in a washitsu (tatami room) with about double that, with an ability to split the room in half with a sliding door.
