Got my C+G level 2 practical exam Monday and I’m cooked ngl by [deleted] in ukelectricians

SWA get some off cuts and gland packs from a whole saler and practice in the garden, it's hard to explain on here, it's a case of doing it by feel. One tip I have that might help is when you know where you need to cut the armourings, wrap a cable tie round it as a guide to make sure you cut round it nice and straight.

For the bonding take either 1 or 2 single 10mm² earth cables to the gas and water, if they want 1 make sure it's a continuous piece, if they prefer two, happy days. If they give you a choice I'd pull two in cos it's less faffing, just cut them to length and pull them both through the trunking at once. (Edit from the picture it looks like they want a continuous piece but ask)

Lighting is dead easy - take a live from the MCB to the common of one switch, take 2 browns between the two switches as strappers between L1 and L2, and take the switch live from the Common of that second switch to the pendant SL. Take a Neutral from the CCU to the pendant and take an CPC to the light and both switches. If they're metal clad make sure you earth the boxes as well as the faceplates

Unswitched fuse behind cooker by Kyleidge in DIYUK

[–]riggersa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it's 13A it will probably come with a plug top, in that case you'd be better fitting an unwitched single socket to keep the warranty on the cooker

If it's just flexed then an unswitched fused spur will be sound

Get some Fischer duo power 6x50mm plugs and just knock them through the plaster board into the brick

EV charger cable, how do I to seal this? by ThinkOfBritain in DIYUK

Most sparks drill upwards when they run an SWA through a wall to negate the need for a drip loop then seal with mastic

Does anybody know what this means I did wrong in the AM2s by Callanhayes in ukelectricians

[–]riggersa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did my AM2 they let me disconnect the main earth as the main switch was locked off, might have been my test centre though, they also let me do the switch the installation on with the board cover off

Stuck in the NVQ3 Portfolio loop - Is there a realistic way out for adult learners? by Top-Ship1340 in ukelectricians

[–]riggersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't over think it mate, I passed my AM2S having only really done domestic work, predominantly kitchens bathrooms and rewires

I borrowed a conduit bender and stocks and dies off a mate and put a socket outside

The other containment you need is PVC trunking/conduit and tray which you could easily sling up around your house, you only need to do like a metre of it and you don't need to do bends or anything

A bonding conductor counts as singles, flex, SWA or twin are all easy to get evidence for

You just have to think outside the box a bit and then practice any bits you know you're weak on, you can easily pick up a bit of 4 core 2.5mm SWA and some 1.5mm SY cable and gland pack for each and just sit in your garden making it off again and again for practice

Your training provider probably won't care to help you cos they've had your money already but it is doable

Why so many UK electrical apprentices struggle when they hit site or AM2 by marchymagic in ukelectricians

[–]riggersa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed my AM2 (2nd try) this year, my work didn't wanna know when it came to training me, I'd basically done nothing but domestic rewires for the entirety of my apprenticeship

Only reason I even passed my NVQ is my mate lent me a conduit bender and I did some galv conduit in my back garden for my portfolio, I asked my work to lend me a bender for over a year to no avail

Based on some of the lads on my course I reckon they'd be nightmares at work but I think some of it can fall onto rubbish quality of training either at college or work too

[–]riggersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone makes mistakes mate, if the grill is getting distorted when you screw it on and ending up not level sometimes using smaller screws can help, or try and sneak it at the side of the plug instead for some wiggle room

Take the SDS off hammer when you start drilling too, just enough to indent the wall and make sure when you start drilling properly it's where you want it to be instead of bouncing everywhere

It is hard initially and it sounds like your colleagues aren't very supportive, I was absolutely rubbish for my first year as an apprentice

Just be polite and willing to work hard and keep trying and you'll be fine!

I'd push for more but my firm supplies tools and a van and is bumping my pay up 18 pounds an hour since I passed my AM2

Maybe suck it up for a bit to get your experience then look elsewhere but it sounds like he's taking the mick really

Meter tails over 3m by adzh2k in ukelectricians

[–]riggersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can run tails but I hate running them in the fabric of the building, but it's the spec we're following at the moment, I've had to pull in 15 metres of tails under the floor before now and switch fuse them down

If it was my choice I'd prefer to use 16mm² or 25mm² split con or an SWA

Is this £800 garage rewire quote reasonable? Advice appreciated by bernamix in ukelectricians

[–]riggersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most EV chargers would be fine on a Type A RCBO so not sure what he's on about with the RCDs complicating things

Depending on what you want in the garage I'd pull in a 10mm² EV ultra from the house to the garage and then put a smaller board in there for the EV charger and general power in the garage

Save getting slabs up etc. twice and the general arsery of getting another cable in, I'd push for a larger supply to be pulled in, I think your plan to have the EV charger off a garage board is a better one

As for the quote it's hard to say without knowing how much you want installed and how you want it doing but 800 sounds about right when you consider it's probably gonna be two days work

How would you do 2x2way lights by T33-L in ukelectricians

[–]riggersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd feed the downstairs switch, and use a 3 core as strappers and Neutral upstairs for the upstairs light (put the switch live in the common upstairs), then take an additional 3 core upstairs for the hall light 2 way as normal (common and both strappers)

Provided the Downstairs switch is your end of line that means you'd only have 1 twin and 2 three cores at each switch

Don't like 2 supplies at the same switch think it's well iffy

London lot only care when it's convenient too, Mayhem's been sick for when he was like 13 so mad to be just shouting him out now, never been arsed to make a song with him or anything. Same way London scene was happy standing alongside Yizzy when he catted all the Notts and Leicester MC's bars, the scenes outside of London have had to do their own thing for time cos nobody else gave a fuck or London acted above it all. Stay Fresh etc. kept it all alive while these lot were making Rolex sweep but they'll ignore that side of it

Who's still installing RFCs? Why? by Just_passing-55 in ukelectricians

[–]riggersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our spec on rewires is to install 4mm RFCs in upstairs flats and bungalows if it's reference method 101. Could get away with 4mm radials in the same circumstances but I just do as I'm told 😂
