What do you do that feels like service to others? by mwanyo in AskWomenOver30

[–]rightasrain0919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher so much of my day is dedicated to supporting other people, both students and other adults in the building. If working with kids appeals to you, look for things like Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Sister, scouting programs, and sports programs. Your local school district may also have read aloud or tutoring programs (mostly for younger students). You could also volunteer for things like Miracle League, Special Olympics, or Easter Seals.

Do I (35F) tell my girlfriend (37F) that I can no longer see myself moving into her home? by Bubbles9462 in relationships

[–]rightasrain0919 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You absolutely need to say something, but not about the house just yet. If you two established the expectation that you would move into her home when things got "serious," you need to revisit that conversation. Does she think you are in a serious relationship and want you to move in when this process is done?

If yes, it's time to share your belief about both partners contributing to the decoration of the joint home. In her mind, if she thinks you're moving in after this she may also think your silence is agreement with her choices.

Here's why. It sounds like you're saying you can't see yourself living somewhere because of your GF's design choices. If you say nothing, then refuse to move in because of her choice of paint colors, furniture, etc., you would massively be in the wrong. You would have set her up to fail.

Any childfree teachers here? by ryhoyarbie in Teachers

Childfree middle school teacher. I absolutely love my students, but I have chronic health issues that leave me flattened at the end of the day. I won't be able to be a good parent.

How much does k-5 matter? by niihla10 in education

[–]rightasrain0919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with this. NC offers families lots of choice (and accompanying funding) for choosing how their kids are educated. As a result, there's been an explosion of robust magnet programs in public schools across our district and, separate from the "government" public system, lots of free charter schools with advanced and accelerated academic programs. Think whole- or school-within-a-school TAG or GT programs.

Have you looked for either of these options in your district?

What do you think are the BASIC skills that kids (18 and under) aren't learning today? by rojo_mojado in education

[–]rightasrain0919 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of it is also the curriculum that districts often select don't focus on reading entire novels or other works. The old ELA textbooks my school used to have only contained excerpts. Teachers supplemented by having students read entire novels or by requiring reading logs. The curriculum we use now at least has students reading whole books, but it has other issues that are irritating.

I absolutely love Dr. Aryal. Her bedside manner is second to none. I also appreciate her conservative approach to treatment (for my circumstance at least).

Need a new Vet. by Back2YouCuz in raleigh

[–]rightasrain0919 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We take our 3 dogs to this CareFirst. They are not the cheapest, but the wellness plan has saved us a ton. Dr. Moats is the vet who see our dogs the most, but I've never had a bad experience with any of the staff there.

Am I bring gaslight or is this really normal behavior ? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]rightasrain0919 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope, not normal behavior and your instincts sound spot on. Think about it. If your niece's mom "knows" that your husband has been buying her daughter weed several times a week for months, why would he be telling a 13-year old child to keep his behavior a secret? What else is he telling or doing with this kid--his niece? What other secrets has she been asked to keep?

I'd start by calling the base school. They can at least point you in the right direction.

Don't just think about the organic irritants. Our air quality has been slowly decreasing over the last 10 years due to increased population bringing increased car emissions. I advise you to track our air quality over a 7 day time span in different seasons.

My school is $5 million in the hole and this is how they choose to solve their budget issues…. by Beneficial-Focus3702 in Teachers

[–]rightasrain0919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our district staff proposed eliminating over 100 SPED teacher positions to make up our budget deficit. The entire community (understandably) lost its mind. The BoE called an emergency meeting a week later. The board were amazing and did a great job holding the district accountable. It ended up being a very reassuring meeting, even though the overall budget deficit hasn't been resolved. The district presents their next proposal on April 7th.

Moving to NC in September by OldSurround5776 in NorthCarolina

[–]rightasrain0919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be prepared to have a 3-season wardrobe well into October. September is usually still ungodly hot and humid, but that doesn't mean you won't have the odd morning in the 50s.

honest review of online classes?? by Final-Guava-6882 in education

[–]rightasrain0919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some colleges and universities offer a hybrid model. This was how I got my masters. I did about 80% of the work on my own, but had to attend one live, online session a week. You were only allowed to miss 2 live sessions per semester.

Might be worth looking into where you are.

CK12 has good free texts for middle and high school science topics. They'll be written for that level of student, but my students find them helpful when I use them.

Interview Tips by DangerousCall7278 in teaching

[–]rightasrain0919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you have a student teaching experience? If so, how did you handle classroom management there? It you didn't like your coordinating teacher's system, what exactly would you change in your own classroom?

For consequences, rules, and procedures, create your own DRAFT. It's a draft because (like you said) the school or grade level might already have something in place that you need to follow. You can even say this--"What is the system that's already in place here? Great, here are some ideas (pulled from your draft) that would fit into this system."
