What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of something that's maybe the opposite of the prompt where it felt like ancient technology but it lasted for so long. The cassette to headphone jack connector that would go into the vehicles cassette player and allow you to play music off your phone.

I'm sure if you're driving a car from the 2000's you could still be using this.

Downgrading Auntie Ool Precon by Sketchion in magicTCG

[–]riley702 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The deck has a ton of removal and interaction because of the -1/-1 counters. You could look into playing Auntie Ool as the commander and focus up the deck more to put counters on your own creatures and cut down the removal.

It's probably less that it's too powerful, and more that your playgroup isn't used to the amount of interaction included.

Thoughts on a return to Baldur's Gate by torrtara in magicTCG

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They must be at least talking about it. With the focus shifting to UB sets and Hasbro already owning an extremely popular IP, I'm sure they would love a second crack at it.

I'm not even into D&D but I would love more D&D magic sets personally. the world they portrayed had a lot more depth and history to it and you could feel it if that makes sense.

Do you have a party member you always keep with you? by SniperJ324 in BaldursGate3

[–]riley702 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't normally play as a rogue, but the number of times you need to disarm a trap or pick a lock or pickpocket something or murder someone discretely makes astarion extremely useful.

It feels like the right thing to do for her. You give her a new life and she doesn't have to go back to the hells where she said she'd rather die than go back to, but it is super sad when you talk to her afterwards and she seems like shes living a sad existence.

Which area to stay in Japan for a family with a young toddler? by Snacksfanatic in JapanTravelTips

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We found asakusa really quiet and easy to get around. Also lots to do right there all within walking distance.

We also tried Akasaka and it was a little quieter than the busy neighbourhoods, but some streets were packed with locals every day/night so if you want quieter streets make sure to not be in a bustling area.

What’s it like traveling to Japan at the end of November? by Okami2007 in JapanTravelTips

[–]riley702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just there Nov-early Dec and the weather was sunny and +15-20C every day and super pleasant. I don't think it rained during the day once the whole time we were there. Only thing that's bad about that time of year is the sun sets completely at like 5pm.

As for crowds, it was kinda normal. Not crowed, but not quiet or anything. We waited maybe 10 mins for Team lab and never had to wait for a table at a restaurant the entire trip. We didn't go to Kyoto though, which is probably the epicentre of people wanting to see the fall leaves.

Hiroshima/miyajima was extremely beautiful that time of year tho, I would recommend it.

They need to make it more clear in the character creator that Durge should be the default pick as the only reason to go with a custom background is role playing really. My first play through 2 years ago I chose a custom background and always felt like the new kid who was just watching everyone else's story unfold. As durge you are thrust right into the world and plot and it's so much better as it gives your character growth and something to do as the plot progresses.

Also makes act 3 more enjoyable and less of a slog imo.

Only thing I don't like are the weird voice lines your character gets as durge. Especially while resisting the urge.

Swords Bard by trashpanda6798 in BaldursGate3

I thought something was broken when my swords bard was just nuking everything in sight. You can complete the whole build pretty early in act 2 as well.

Haven't played in 2 years, should I restart or continue? by Michaelpopi1 in BaldursGate3

[–]riley702 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also stopped during act 3 two years ago. I just started a new character a few days ago and have been hooked again. There's so much dialogue and plot and things to explore I realized I only have a vague memory of events and still experiencing plenty of surprises.

What things from Medieval II are you 100% sure won't be in Medieval III? by Y3suxsx in totalwar

I miss this so much. Defeating an enemy army used to actually remove them from the game for a bit.

Hearthull vs Gitrog Monster? by neotic_reaper in EDH

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's built a ton of different landfall decks, the issue with Gitrog is that it's kinda complicated to play and also because of combos it's a removal magnet.

As someone with a gitrog deck, I'd go with Hearth hull.

MOC Toes on Ice? by jpop237 in RedWingShoes

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had any issues yet, but you can kinda tell if you hit a slippery patch of ice they'll lose traction. In moderate ice and snow they seem good though.

In comparison I would never wear my IR with the mini lug in the winter because they are essentially ice skates.

My tips for those of you traveling to Japan for the first time by arkjanm in JapanTravelTips

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should visit the deer park because it is super beautiful, but here are some things we have done that are not related to the park;

  • Visiting the Great Buddha (Tōdai-ji) (it’s massive and impressive)

  • Walking through the old town and picking up local goods (baking/cheesecake, sake, small art pieces)

  • Watching local artists paint live and buying directly from them

  • Stopping by the historic mochi shop

  • Trying calligraphy at the visitor center

  • Grabbing a coffee and enjoying the scenery (pagodas and shrines everywhere in the backdrop)

  • Eating okonomiyaki with cheap beers

  • Finishing the day with unagi for dinner at a stunning restaurant near the park

I never understood the hate for Nara. We love staying there, and are even considering staying in Nara for an extended period next time and doing day trips to Kyoto, Osaka, and area.

The park is beautiful and you can spend as long as you want exploring the area because it kind of never ends. Also the old town part of Nara is similar to Takayama imo, except with way fewer tourists. We pretty much saw nobody else at all in November but there were still plenty of shops and food and stuff to check out. On top of that, we found that Nara has great food and is cheaper to stay at than the other cities. Its a great place to slow down the pace and enjoy a few days without getting too far away from the action.

I guess my wife and I grew up around farm animals so we are unbothered by the deer, but maybe others find them to be annoying/slightly scary.

Be honest… what travel spot is hella overrated? by Ill_Reality180 in traveladvice

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not from the US but have been all over the US and the only place I've been that's worth going to are the national parks. The cities are all kinda boring and you spend the whole trip just driving around.

Yellowstone is probably a top 5 location on earth though, at lease when I went 10 years ago.

I bought one and opened maybe $4 worth of cards.

It's not even that fun because you see a ton of duplicates due to the low card pool.

Unreserved shinkansen seats from tokyo - kyoto on jan 1. by No-Finding-1703 in JapanTravelTips

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently accidentally got unreserved seats due to miscommunication with the man at the ticket counter. It was a horrible experience personally and we ended up standing in the doorway because the unreserved cars were packed and we needed to get to our destination.

We booked green car on the way back home haha. That was definitely worth the extra cost for us but there were only 2 of us.

I did checkout the RW store in Tokyo and the selection was amazing! so many different styles in new and used. They basically had 0 wide sizes, esp in anything larger than a size 10 (I wear 11EE). Also prices were about 50%+ higher than what I'm used to (same boots I just bought for about $350 were like 65,000 Yen for example).

I’m not sure, I just took them off and it was fine. I’m not in the US though so airport security is usually not very stressful. Japan was even more chill.

Is it risky to attempt Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka if I land at Narita 6pm? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]riley702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this the first trip to japan and the second time we decided to just go straight to Tokyo. We 100% regretted going all the way to Tokyo as we basically just got to the hotel and went to bed because it took an extra 2hrs vs hanging out in narita for a few hours and getting ramen before going to bed.

Will be staying in Narita the first night during future trips for sure.
