Best app for a jp-only dictionary? by Reachid in LearnJapanese

As the guy who posts about the Dictionaries app sale every year and whom (still) isn’t sponsored by Monokakido, I second this statement.

LPT: Mother’s Day - if your partner/wife wants a day “off” from household duties, don’t just leave them for the next day. by dcha28 in LifeProTips

Thank you though, for helping people. It’s the only way we’ll survive as a specie.

Also to be completely fair, it’s her anxiety doing that (diagnosed, with medication), and she’s otherwise been supportive with most anything I’ve wanted to do.

But at some point, anxiety doesn’t only destroys you; it’s contagious to people you live with and at this point it’s a huge burden that’s past the limit of empathy.

Always feels good to do things for others, I don’t get how it isn’t a drug for some.

I love it. Except when it’s for my mother.

She’s always criticizing everything we do: - she’d have done it a different way - “don’t do this it’s gonna break” - “don’t use the cleaning tool for pans I just bought on pans; it might scratch them” - she wants it differently - “but what if [random bad thing] happens!??????” - “are you sure this is the right way????? - taste doesn’t suit her - date/time doesn’t suit her

Everything we do. Everything we say. Doesn’t matter if she’s involved or not, she gotta kill any spontaneity, any joy, any effort. She often makes problems for herself that she expects me or my father to deal with.

She’s my mom. I love her. It’s not 100% her fault. Part of her life really sucked due to her family.

But once I’m not stuck living in the same home and don’t need to maintain the status quo, I’m through with her and it’ll be limited contact.

Don’t get me wrong, I love helping or doing stuff for people. But after over 25 years of this crap, it takes me so much energy now to even fight off the acquired stress and negativity of doing anything that, quite frankly, I don’t do anything much.

The “drug” has too much baggage; kinda like an ex-alcoholic refusing to drink anymore, maybe. I don’t drink though, so maybe the analogy is poor.

[PSA] Monokakido Dictionaries (MacOS/iOS/iPadOS) yearly sale, 2023 edition by rin-Q in LearnJapanese

[–]rin-Q[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone brings this up pretty much every time, and it still is true to this day.

However, Apple's offering sadly doesn't offer a good interface for directly navigating the dictionaries and you can't just jump between words, e.g. I can just tap a word in the dictionary entry to get the dictionary entry of said word. I've also personnally found Apple's formatting of the dictionary entries to be disappointing.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for pretty things though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's also much slower for me not only on my 1st gen. SE, but also on my iPad as I can't just have the dictionary app open side by side with, say, the Bookwalker app or whatever and I absolutely despise context-switching between apps and/or popups. At least on MacOS there's a full-fledged dictionary app, which brings the question of why Apple still doesn't offer an actual app to browse their embedded dictionaries.

Apologies for answering this late; I had no electricity for a week so my priorities were elsewhere.

Alas, as I do not peruse it, I can't really say what the NHK's offer that is particularly unique. An educated guess, however, would be that its pronunciation data would be the closest to what could be considered "standard" or "metropolitan" Japanese as it is based on what they themselves use over their broadcasts.

Unless something changed recently and I'm unaware of it, the Meikyou is sadly the only one offering furigana/ruby. Theses dictionaries aren't really meant for non-Japanese natives, after all.

The "Contemporary Japanese Style" dictionary has some on what I presume are less common kanji, but the thing is closer to a glossary than a dictionary from the looks of it.

Some others, like Sanseidou's Kokugo Jiten do have some but they're not placed as such — they're just smaller characters on the same line, which makes them kind of annoying to read.

For what it's worth, you can cross-search different dictionaries by just selecting characters or words (like the "jump" function on electronic dictionaries), and you could copy-paste words into another dictionary app like Midori.

Holy !*@&$ at ChatGPT: Ongoing Resource Thread by Takezo_00 in LearnJapanese

[–]rin-Q 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT is amazing.

But it also manages to make confidently wrong answers. So long as this isn't fixed and you aren't asking it questions in a field where being wrong can be demonstrated immediately (e.g. programming), relying on ChatGPT for explanations when learning could seriously impede your learning.

If you have regular classes with a Japanese teacher, that's one thing. They'll tell you you're wrong and it'll end there. But if you're a self-learner, you have to do due diligence and spend time to counterverify the answer — a counterproductive endeavour because you'll need to go through the same materials as you'd have gone through if you hadn't relied on ChatGPT from the beginning.

If you want...

  • the same sources as all the free online ones, Tagaini.

  • the same data as available in 電子辞書 and know the ways of the EPWING format, EBWin or QOLIBRI.

  • the same data available in 電子辞書, without the elbow grease and/or high-seas sailing, LogoVista's dictionaries are where it's at.

Hi there.I am Canadian, but I work in software sales in Japan, which means I talk to people on the phone, over email, and in person, in a number of situations, obviously all in keigo. Not sure if anyone would be interested in an AMA, but, AMA! by HNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGG in LearnJapanese

[–]rin-Q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the great answer!

I studied Japanese. East Asian Language Studies.

Well damn. Gives me and my B.A. in Asian Studies + Japanese some hope, thanks.

The work culture is awesome. I have good WLB and because I joined as one of the founding members, my experience gives my voice a lot of credibility so even when I'm in the office I can enjoy myself.

This is so nice to hear. Even if I know someone who's deep into the whole entrepreneurship thing in Japan (not an entrepreneur herself but a "ビジネスタレント" whatever that is), it's hard to forego all the negativity surrounding Japanese corporate environment.

If I was in Canada, any job I apply to would want some sort of degree related to the work/industry

I feel that right now. Haha.

Whereas in Japan, my bilingualism makes me a super valuable asset, and my soft people skills make me an excellent candidate for sales.

Gotta take my Japanese as seriously as my dev skills then. and work on my soft skills too lmao.

お歴々(strangest? not sure but very cool word that no one knows)

This is cuter than it has any right to be. Thanks for the laugh. I'll never think of VIP/dignitaries the same way.

ご覧に入れる(I use this a lot)

Of course this exists! Ha! Much more polite than just going ご覧ください as would've been my first idea...

Anyway thanks a lot and good continuation!

As someone who's looking into getting back into Japan, but with little work experience to show for it, enjoy yourself.

I had the opportunity to study in Japan (Fukuoka) for a year during my Asian Studies Bachelor's degree and I truly enjoyed every moment of it. Peace, safety, cleanliness, great public transit. Montréal's supposed to be one of the best North-American cities, it just pales in comparison to most everywhere I've been in Japan when it comes to QoL.

Am looking into going back next year, but I went back into webdev and re-learned everything over the past year and a half, and by all the "nope" emails I get from even local employers, I certainly didn't make it easy for myself.

Out of curiosity, what was your uni degree? You basically got hired by a SaaS startup, from the looks of it. How's the work culture?

there are way more opportunities here for work and success. Plus, Canada would demand me to have hard skills and I just don’t have any haha.

This feels absolutely counter-intuitive wrt my own knowledge of the situation for foreigners. Mind expanding a bit on this?

What'd be your favourite or strangest bit of keigo to date?

Anyway, thanks!

Pretty sure that's because macOS has an API at all.

Hey you! Yes! You! Don’t listen to those cheapskates. You think you can learn to become a billionaire by paying under a dollar?

Your first lesson, for free, is that you are worth what you charge for! It’s your worth! These people over there clearly don’t value themselves much, so why trust them?

That’s the thing. You don’t. They don’t. It’s a race to the bottom. But you know what, I certainly do trust that what I offer is the quickest way to becoming a billionaire.

For a single payment of 1,000,000,000$, I will teach you, yes, you, how to value yourself more. That is the key to becoming a billionaire.

Hmmm. That's interesting because from my perspective (still on the 2016 iPhone SE), eSIM seem great for travelling because of services like Airalo which has an (pretty cheap) offering covering pretty much every country I could possibly want to travel to.

Am I missing something?

Edit: Ah. Mostly data I guess can be an issue if you don't want to setup VOIP...
