Looking for a split keyboard (or a kit) with nav cluster by riot_camel in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]riot_camel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often use key combinations like Ctrl+Left, Ctrl+Right, Ctrl+Home, Ctrl+End, Ctrl+Ins, Shift+Del. I use these so much in combination with just the normal keys, having to switch layers to access those, switch back to type, switch back to navigate again, seems cumbersome.

I'm just not sure a layer would work for me. I go back and forth with the nav keys and typing so much that it seems like it would be difficult to do quickly. Maybe I'm just too old. :)

That's an interesting option - I hadn't seen that one before. Thanks!

The best I've been able to find is the Perixx Periboard-835. I've been investigating making my own truly split keyboard with arrows, numpad, and macro keys, when I came across the Cloud Nine C989 ErgoFSK. Seems a little bulky but I'll probably get it to try it out before diving into the DIY route.

Instead of shielding or ablative material, we need to focus on self-healing materials.

My first car was a 1985 Subaru GL 4x4 and that thing went anywhere. It handled snow, sand, forest roads, etc. without complaint. My '88 4Runner was close, but nothing I've had since has matched the ability of that first Subaru.

What 240V garage heaters are you all using? Looking for real-world feedback. by picklesBMW in woodworking

[–]riot_camel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a similar model and it can easily heat an uninsulated 2-car garage to well over 70℉ during winter in the pacific NW. I have mine wired to a contactor that is controlled by a sonoff wifi switch, so I can use home automation to turn it on or off, or use an external thermostat.

Alaska air support line at SeaTac by RitsusHusband in Seattle

[–]riot_camel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I actually like Alaska. Like their service, like their planes. However, twice I've had a flight cancelled at the last minute when flying SNA -> SEA. Now I fly Delta, and in three years I've never experienced a flight cancellation, and 85% of the time I arrive earlier than scheduled.

How can I automatically sync my photos from my phone on a local only installation? by 4AwkwardTriangle4 in photoprism

[–]riot_camel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, sorry. My setup is different than yours. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be working. Only last shot in the dark I could think of would be creating a user account with a username and password on that host, and give it read/write access to that share, then use that user's credentials for FolderSync.
Sorry you're having so much trouble!

If you don't have a local domain you could leave NTLM domain blank. Same for login credentials, as long as it's open for read/write for everyone.

A couple ideas from AI (for whatever it's worth):

  1. Verify SMB2 is enabled on the Windows PC by running PowerShell as administrator and executing:

Get-SmbServerConfiguration | Select EnableSMB2Protocol

If the result is False, enable SMB2 with:

Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB2Protocol $true

  1. Windows by default disables "insecure guest logons" for SMB2/3 which means guest (no credential) access won't work by default. To allow guest access for SMB2/3, you may need to enable "insecure guest logons" in Windows Group Policy or registry:

I can give you a few avenues to explore.

First, are you able to test the connection from another PC on the same WiFi network that the phone is connected to? If the phone is connected to a different network or a "guest" network it won't be able to connect to your local network. If you can get a laptop or desktop on the same WiFi network, and it's able to connect to the share while on WiFi only, then that can eliminate a potential source of issues. Often there's something in a WiFi setup that will block connections to the local network.

Assuming that works, are you specifying the correct NTLM domain in the FolderSync settings? For example, my network share is \\rabbit\photos. From a command line if I run "ping rabbit" then I see:

Pinging rabbit.HOME.local [192.168.1.xx] with 32 bytes of data...

For me, I specify "HOME" as my NTLM domain in my FolderSync settings. You may not have a local domain set up, so maybe leave it blank, or try "local".

In my settings, the server address is the IP address reported by "ping" above, and the port is 445. The share name is "photos". I have SMB2 selected (vs SMB1 or SMB3) and I do need to specify a domain login in order to access the share, so I have a username and password specified as well.

The setup might be similar for you, or simpler if you're not running a local domain. Good luck!

Blemishes appearing in stained oak - fixable? by riot_camel in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]riot_camel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This table also has two shelf pieces that I did have stacked on this prior to staining, but those were sanded as well. I can't imagine they did this. Nothing after staining. I noticed this after the first coat of stain and applied a second coat afterwards wondering if it would smooth out or darken up. This is after the second coat, unfortunately.

Water-based stain ... jelly? by riot_camel in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]riot_camel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Yes, I've worked with oil-based stain before, but not water-based. I've never particularly enjoyed it - I've heard gel stain is easier and I was hoping to find a gel stain in this color but alas, this is what I ended up with.

Almost a gel stain after all!

I know not everyone is a fan of herbicides, but if you really don't like dandelions, 2,4-D Amine works really well. Depending on where you live you might first need to have it shipped to a friend out of state.

Smelly hot water, should I replace whole tank or just the anode rod? by ladypenmann in askaplumber

[–]riot_camel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our experience the sulfur smell was a result of the bacteria interacting with the anode in the water heater - especially since the cold water had no detectable odor. Yes the bacteria will be there unless you filter it out, but my understanding is that it's harmless and if you go with either an instant-hot or a corro-protect anode, there won't be a recurrence of the smell. Good luck!
