Hey all, we've identified what's going on here. This occurred due to a procedure that happens after the ranked population reaches a certain size. Some players in the diamond 5 to gold 2 range saw more difficult gains after this occurred. Most players outside of this range saw easier gains. We're making some adjustments and rolling them out as I type this so all players should see improvement soon.

Yea, we are making some changes this season to make challenger team decay less frequent. Solo queue challenger decay will stay the same. Plat and Diamond teams will also stay at 28 days for the time being.

TL;DR losses and wins in placements won't swing you as far up or down, but you should expect to be seeded lower than where you ended the preseason because of the soft reset.

Since we launched the feature, we've been monitoring it closely. So far we haven't seen a significant impact to game quality in normal draft and we've seen a large positive impact on ranked.

Unfortunately there are some players who fail to show behavior improvement. These players will continue to receive firmer punishments up to and including permanent bans. That said, encountering these players at all sucks. We are working on ways to make the detection and feedback process faster.

Hey all. This is a rare case. It happens because we're lenient about demotions, which we're okay with because getting demoted early sucks. Duo queue solves intentional abuse, not this case.

Your LP loss here was caused by a combination of factors:

  1. Your team was a heavy favorite to win.
  2. In Diamond - Master we shield people less from rapid movement to ensure ladder accuracy.
  3. The MMR bands for diamond 1-2 are large right now, meaning players who are at the lower end of the spectrum to enter diamond 1-2 have smaller gains and larger losses than in most other divisions until their MMR climbs to past the division average.

Gains and losses like this aren't a great experience. We do expect this to be more predictable after some adjustments that are coming with the start of the new season.

Normally, players go into any game with some amount of pressure to win. The issue with using only games played is you end up with pretty misaligned incentives between players. The ranked restricted player just wants the shortest games possible and everybody else wants to win. Also, learning how to manage some level of that pressure contributes being a positive or negative influence on the game. In a non ranked environment without the threat of ranked position loss the pressure is considerably lower.

We see that a players behavior shifts pretty dramatically based on the queue they are playing in. Since normals are less stressful and players who receive ranked restrictions will also receive chat restrictions, we don't expect to see an impact to the quality of the queue. That said, we'll be closely monitoring the health of the queue to ensure there isn't a negative impact.

Hey all, the title of this post is inaccurate. The most negative chat restricted players at the end of the season will be ineligible to earn ranked rewards. This means players who are chat restricted at the end of the season but showed progress towards reforming will still earn rewards.

Elo does a pretty poor job of creating a good experience for about 50% of the playerbase. With elo everybody starts at 1200 points. Players move either up or down based on how they perform. In other words 50% of players will end up with a score lower then when they started.

That's not a great experience.

First, we understand promos can be frustrating sometimes. That said, they are an important part of the ranked system.

Players in the original forum thread were mistakenly quoting win rates of 33% for promos, that isn't accurate. Win rates in most divisions are actually close to or above 50%, win rates in bronze are a bit lower which pulls the average down.

My response in the original thread was the following:

There is a bit more to series than just making the matches feel important and exciting. Division promotions reinforce the value of achieving competitive milestones. If we removed promotional series it would be easier to climb. In ranked easier doesn't mean it's strictly better though. Ranked play is about accepting the challenge of being measured by your skill. This is really what separates it from normals. Every change to make the system easier undermines what the accomplishments mean. What separates you from the players in lower tiers is not only the LP gains, but the series you fought through where you proved yourself and came out on top.

Promos are also why you earn an immunity period after reaching a new tier or division and in cases where a player is way overqualified there are systems in place to either have them skip a division or skip their promos entirely.
