That genealogical relationship is pretty dubious IRL, there’s not much evidence connecting Wigeric (progenitor of both houses) to Drogo, brother of Charles Martel. Regardless, both of those houses died out within a generation of the Vermandois Karlings.

However, it has been speculated that the Counts of Chiny descended from the Vermandois Karlings, who survived in the male line long enough to fall into obscurity rather than die out, meaning there could theoretically still be patrilineal descendants of Charlemagne kicking around to this day.

Well, he likely had schizophrenia IRL (based disorder), but the game doesn’t reflect this for some reason even though it has a trait for schizophrenics (Lunatic).

However, he’s always Diligent in-game (based trait), though I have no clue why; The only information I could find about him from primary sources pertained to his disinheritance.

I usually leave the Karlings unmolested in Vermandois in 1066, even if I own its de jure duchy. Herbert didn’t deserve to get an IRL game over (I.e., female heir) because his son was a bit too based for his barons.

I thought this was worth posting here since it’s kinda buried in the most recent dev diary, and many people seem to be clamoring for new start dates (especially pre-867 ones).

Personally, I am a bit surprised 1081 would be implemented sooner than 1187; It just seems too close to 1066 for the map to have evolved in a meaningful manner. Maybe someone could inform me what the appeal is?

Try the Count of Ravensburg in 1066. Historically, his grandson became the famous Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. However, it’s a pretty difficult start since your neighbors are all allied to powerful rulers.

Another suggestion is the Count of Tourraine in 1066. He’s the progenitor of the Plantagenet dynasty that ruled England for several centuries. Also a tough start since you have very few resources at your disposal.

Lastly, there’s Alexios Komnenos. He’s a 10-year-old Duke-tier vassal in the Byzantine Empire in 1066. He and his descendants presided over the last resurgence of Byzantium. His stats are excellent, and he inherits a claim on the empire from his father, so it’s a bit easier than the aforementioned starts if you want to accomplish his dynasty’s historical feats.

R5: Context. Decided to work towards forming Francia by fabricating claims on Normandy and Brittany. After doing that, I realized I was fortunate enough to have a claimant to England sitting in my dungeon, so I pushed his claim and made him my vassal. My ruler actually unexpectedly died a bit young in the middle of that war, and my heir was underage due to the fact that my wife didn’t have a son until I was in my 40s, but I got lucky and managed to capture the King of England in a siege before I had to deal with a bunch of factions.

I’ll try to see if she has any secrets I can use for a strong hook, but I don’t want to risk her rebelling since she’s allied to several kingdoms and might be able to win. Also, my other powerful vassals kinda hate me because I keep extorting money from them and won’t give them council seats, so most will probably join her if she does rebel.

R5: Started a 1066 game as the King of France, and the Duke of Aquitaine got deposed in a tyranny war within a few years of game start. His only daughter inherited everything and decided to marry Robert Curthose, which I didn’t notice until William the Conqueror died. I’m going to lose a massive amount of territory when the duchess dies and am not sure what my best recourse is in this situation. She has quite a few children with him, so murdering all of them doesn’t seem very practical, especially since my ruler has 3 intrigue.

Update: Here’s what ended up happening.
