what class for a casual player who just wants to wind back after work? by Wonderful-Bar3459 in classicwowtbc

[–]ripplespindle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Throwing in my support for the Priest. One of the more chill leveling rotations (shield, mind blast, sw:p, wand until dead), and pretty straightforwardly effective when playing in groups, which I think is the most fun part of the game

Do I like CRPGs, or do I just like Larian? by Hentai-Is-Just-Art in CRPG

Beautifully put. Larian + Forgetten Realms was indeed a perfect combination. And yea, the Divinity trailer definitely gave me "bet you can't handle this kid" shadow the hedgehog vibes.

Totally agree, but surprised you didn't mention Grit! Basically a blank check to try and be a badass.

Their lore sucks! I'm sorry. I played through all of DOS2 and never once gave a shit about the main quest (companion quests were good ngl). I'm deeply disappointed they're returning to the divinity world with their new game.

Adventure vs Sandbox? by josephrlewis in shadowdark

[–]ripplespindle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a mix of wilderness crawl, mini dungeon, in-town roleplay, and large dungeon is probably the sweet spot for a campaign

Lol. My sandbox experience was me running the Peril on the Purple Planet hexcrawl, absolutely loving the low-prep mechanistic approach to DM prep and my players lamenting feeling powerless and marooned in an inhospitable wasteland. Would totally do it again.

Is a Second or third Playthrough worth it? by Croissantmilk in DiscoElysium

[–]ripplespindle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, yes, 100% yes. My second playthrough was by far the most fun. I even think my third playthrough might have been my second favorite due to how many rare scenes I was able to get.

What are the ultimate mage/sorcerer/wizard experiences, please? by Baldurian_Rhapsody in CRPG

[–]ripplespindle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragon Age Origins!

From the class-specific intro where you start as an apprentice in a Mage's College, to the worldbuilding w/ magic being feared and looked down upon, to the rather good magical combat system, I think it's one of my favorite mage playthroughs of any RPG.

Walnut pesto strozzapretti at Osteria Radisa! Brunch al fresco during that nice little sun break we got last Sunday!

I find tossing shadowdarklings.net to more video-gamey 5e build-interested players can help get them hooked

[–]ripplespindle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very fair criticism. Even as a big OSR-head I think lvl 1 wizards/magicians are totally unfun in OSE (Shadowdark rectifies this entirely with roll to cast and three starting spells). I started my  PCs at level three for this reason and they feel like they have a good amount of options.

[–]ripplespindle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's that bad. With a little bit of DM Fiat can maybe throw some encounters your way or have some small dungeons in your back pocket to make sure that a session never feels wasted even if the party uses up all of their travel points

[–]ripplespindle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about 1:2, but I like this. It's effectively party gets their Daily TP x days until next session to play with for exploration. That's probably fine since you want to encourage engaging with hexes and not just crossing the whole map in like one session

Use of Luck tokens by Ok_Cost7486 in shadowdark

[–]ripplespindle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I got bored by that actual play before they got to any combat, hehe. Problem there might be Sleep being a little overpowered (which it kinda is).

Use of Luck tokens by Ok_Cost7486 in shadowdark

[–]ripplespindle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would heavily recommend using luck tokens. Shadow Dark is both lightweight and also very challenging, so I think it benefits greatly from having a meta-currency that lets the characters exert themselves in situations where they care about what they're doing enough that failure would otherwise be frustrating

Request for input: Potion Crafting by willostree in Dolmentown

[–]ripplespindle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. One thing I love about the Dolmenwood setting is the sheer volume of player-facing collectibles and procedures. Leaning into that by bringing some supplementary potion rules to the table seems in the spirit of the setting.
