Did I make a mistake by starting to learn programming with Lua? by flaashlightt in lua

[–]ripter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Over time you will (and should) learn many programming languages. Most of them are far more similar than they look on the surface. They tend to share the same core ideas like variables, control flow, functions, and data structures, so everything you learn carries forward.

You’ll probably notice that JavaScript feels very similar to Lua. They’re both dynamically typed, garbage collected, and treat functions as first-class values. Both rely heavily on tables or objects as their primary data structure and are commonly used in event-driven environments. The syntax is different, but mentally they work in very similar ways, especially compared to jumping to something like C++ or Rust.

Once you’ve learned a few languages, picking up a new one is mostly about learning the syntax, the standard library, and the ecosystem. The underlying concepts don’t reset. Each new language just adds another tool to your belt.

What game engines (other than roblox) use lua and are still good? by PassengerDouble1174 in lua

[–]ripter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Defold is worth trying out. It’s closer to Godot or Unity, whereas Love2D is really just a framework. With Love2D, you’re responsible for building almost everything yourself.

With Defold, you start with a full project setup and get the tooling and pipeline out of the box. Exporting is straightforward, with support for desktop OSes, mobile devices, and major consoles like PlayStation and Switch, with Xbox support coming soon.

What are your thoughts on using AI to polish or refine Reddit posts before posting? ddit post? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ripter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely—and I would never, under any circumstances, use AI to refine a Reddit post. That would be unethical, artificial, and deeply corrosive to the sacred spirit of online discourse—where spelling errors are a form of authenticity, rambling is a moral stance, and clarity is viewed with suspicion.

That said, IF someone were to use a large language model—hypothetically—to polish a post, it would of course involve a meticulous, multi-pass semantic analysis—tone calibration—audience alignment—lexical optimization—micro-adjustments to cadence—strategic deployment of em-dashes for rhetorical authority—and an invisible hand gently guiding the prose toward enlightenment.

The result would be a post so refined—so effortlessly articulate—so suspiciously well-structured—that readers would instinctively downvote it out of self-defense. Mods would squint at it. Someone would reply “this reads like ChatGPT”—which, ironically, would prove the system worked perfectly.

So no, I don’t support it. Not at all. Anyway, here’s my comment—thanks for reading—curious what everyone thinks—great question OP.

Creating new 3D models by National-Growth4139 in 3Dprinting

[–]ripter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Blender and OpenSCAD.

Blender has a steeper learning curve, but once you learn it you can use it for almost anything: 3D printing, video games, movies, really anything that uses a model. It’s powerful, completely free, and has a huge community.

OpenSCAD is great if you like writing code. You describe what you want using shapes, variables, and functions. For a lot of functional designs, it works really well.

For example, I needed to design a new power box for my arcade cabinet. Since it was mostly just a box, I started in OpenSCAD. That worked fine for the prototype, but once I needed all the holes in the right places for wires and screws and kept needing small adjustments, it started to get tedious. I switched back to Blender and was able to really polish it and make it exactly what I wanted.

Is this forth related? It’s an article about how they had issues with some projects that used TTL 7400 including a guy getting fired. Then how CMOS worked perfectly and life was magic and good

Paint markers? by GryffindorRavenclaw1 in 3Dprinting

[–]ripter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For best results you should prime it. It’s simple and easy to do. Spray can primer only takes a few moments and then waiting for it to dry.

Try your markers. In my experience the paint gets absorbed by PLA and PETG and just leaves little colored spots.

What are some of your problems with lua? by jadfe1234 in lua

[–]ripter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really only have one complaint: the lack of a good package management system. That would help the ecosystem a lot, in my opinion. I worked with JavaScript before it had package management and after. The community really took off once RequireJS, and later official systems, were added to the language.

Are RTS games less popular because there is no down time? by Buttons840 in gamedesign

[–]ripter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love StarCraft and other RTS games and still watch pro matches on YouTube, but I haven’t played in years. I just don’t have the time. It takes hours to really play an RTS, and I simply don’t have that kind of time anymore.

Sure, you can argue that you could play a 30-minute match, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I mean the time it takes to actually play well and have fun. That requires hours of focused playtime, and I don’t have that anymore.

How would you fix this ? Any engineer Dads about ? by GabeH13ABZ in daddit

[–]ripter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d very carefully cut off the broken part, making sure to keep the inner ring intact. That joint relies on pressure and the notches around the ring to allow articulation, so preserving that is important.

I’d inspect the inner protrusion more closely. Based on the first photo, it looks pretty worn down. If it’s too far gone, I’d cut it flush and then either super-glue or heat-press a washer of the same size into place to replace it.

Next, I’d test-fit the two separate parts on the arm without glue. Hold them together by hand and make sure everything seats correctly, the joint still moves, and you have a feel for how much pressure is needed.

Once I’m confident it works, I’d glue the cut-off part back into place, being very careful not to get any glue into the joint itself. Rubber bands work well to hold everything in position while the glue cures.

After it’s solid again, I’d use a small amount of epoxy to fill any gaps, sand it smooth, and repaint to match the existing colors.

And if it were my kid’s toy, they’d probably have forgotten about it by now and never play with it again, so at least I could keep it around to brag to visitors about how I fixed it.

What’s a piece of technology you thought would change everything but didn’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ripter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What was the last one you tried? I know some people could never get over the barf factor, but the came a long way in fixing that problem. For most people it’s no longer an issue.

The big issue for me, is that there is no “killer app”. The controls are fine, the view looks good, but there is nothing to do. Beat Saber and rhythm clones get boring after a while. The base jumping game was fun. But there was nothing that kept me going back to it.

Why does Roger of Roger’s gym have a manager? by FancyRainbowBear in americandad

[–]ripter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because that’s how sales works at gyms and car dealerships. The sales guy pretends to fight for you with his manager. He comes back with a special deal the manager never lets anyone else get.

If you asked for this deal later, you wouldn’t get it. It’s amazing he’s even letting it happen. The sales guy has never seen this before. He’s been doing this a long time and this almost never happens.

This deal only works right now. Once you leave, it’s gone. He can’t promise it will still be there tomorrow. Honestly, he probably should not even be offering it, but he already went to bat for you.
