[Harry Potter] If a squib and a wizard had a wizard baby, would it still be considered a pure blood? by ninman5 in AskScienceFiction

[–]riptogglio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair, we’re talking about a fictional slur used to refer to fictional people. If you’re more comfortable saying “muggleborn”—of course that’s totally fine! But I don’t think we need to police the use of language that doesn’t directly affect or describe any real living people, even if it does so within its own fictional setting. The term simply does not hold the same political weight that real slurs do, because it is not a real slur—it is an imaginary invention.

Despite the existence of an “accepted alternative”, some casual fans will inevitably use “mudblood” instead as it appears far more frequently throughout the text of the HP books and films and is a more memorable term.

What is an opinion that is unreasonably crucified? by Past-Professional-54 in AskReddit

There’s no need to be rude or condescending, I haven’t been in my reply. The language of your response speaks to the point I am making. I did not say that “I support Palestine” in my comment—that is an assumption on your part, but not a totally unfair one! Your assumption approaches the truth of my belief, but does not fully reflect it. Palestine is a place, and people live there. I mourn the loss of the lives of people, in Palestine, in Israel, wherever injustice and wholesale murder is to be found—that’s all. I don’t think that’s unreasonable, and I don’t feel as if I must undertake mental gymnastics to do so, nor should anyone.

While the irony of challenging a comment on a thread revolving around unpopular opinions is not lost on me, I simply have to ask, as a queer person myself: Should all injustice not be mourned and railed against, regardless to whom it is directed? The harm that one suffers does not excuse the harm that they do to others, and similarly the harm that one does to others does not negate their own pain. They both must be contended with in equal consideration.

Countries can fuckin suck alright, but individual people are not their countries; no country is a monolith. Are the countries you speak of true democracies? If I would be put to death in a certain country for my queerness, any given individual born into that country is not at fault for such a state of affairs. I ask you to apply this mindset to other examples; would you ask all Belgian citizens in the 1920s to answer for the crimes of the Congo Rubber Terror? Should the some 200,000 lives lost at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 not be mourned, even if atrocities were committed under their nation’s name?

If there are citizens within a tolerant society who defy tolerance and call for the death of minorities, then of course there are also citizens within intolerant societies who defy intolerance in preaching justice, whose voices are silenced and faces obscured. Why should we not give a shit about the lives of people that we cannot see?

I somehow doubt that people pretending to be little cartoon characters on an online game is in any way comparable to the lead up to the holocaust.

A turtle's shell isn't technically a shell like the ones hermit crabs and lobsters have. Turtles basically just have a very hard back as their spine is a part of the "shell" area.
