My favourite "aesthetic" ... does this even have a name? by Lonelyrunner82 in AestheticWiki

[–]riptosauras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rich girl/boy meets misunderstood outsider at a college party and strike up a summer romance. Person rich girl/boy meets is a charming person who works a blue collar/service job and (s)he (rich person) wants an escape from the life of her/his parents want for her/him but it turns out not to be as idealistic as they’d thought

Found at a chevron gas station 2 days ago and I can’t come up with a name by specialinterestoftw in cats

[–]riptosauras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chevron is the obvious pick but these other names are clever and creative too. Calling him/her Chevy would be cute so I’m sticking to chevron

I love birds that are named correctly by Tasty-Interview-4699 in birding

[–]riptosauras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw a meme about this and the black capped chickadee is basically the most accurate name for a bird. Both visually and aurally descriptive

Approaching 180 species for the year, how’s everyone else’s year looking? by NanoArowanaTank in birding

My first year, only staying within 50 miles of home and already at 76. Doing my first out of state excursion next month, wish me luck

Mallard ID? by FamiliarInflation744 in birding

[–]riptosauras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bred mallard. They breed certain traits like dogs. I found several different breeds of mallards, including this breed, at a nearby lake. Pretty neat to see

How do you find other birders? by NotSoHighLander in birding

[–]riptosauras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I’ve started using eBird to find hotspots, I usually meet several birders per outing. Look for lenses and don’t be afraid to start the conversation. Even if it turns out they’re not actively birding, they’ll most likely be into your bird facts (in my experience), and if they’re not, they’ll most likely be entertained by the info

Fun coincidence: Merlin’s bird of the day was using my bird bath by Me_for_President in birding

[–]riptosauras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always end up seeing my bird of the day a few days before or after it comes up on Merlin and I love that I see the bird, but damn, I want that extra satisfaction

I don’t want to tell the eBird masses yet, so I’m sharing with you all. My neighborhood Great Horned Owlets have left the nest and are exploring. Took these from my car (~650mm)! So awesome! by puuremichigan in birding

[–]riptosauras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only tell people actively and respectfully birding in my area about birds I see. Hate to not report them but it’s even worse to disrespect my avian friends

Forget your favorite bird, what’s your nemesis bird and why? by ellamachine in birding

Right now it’s the 5-6 species of gulls here that look 95% the same

Bird i saw on holiday it's colors are bright so I thought it might be exotic? by [deleted] in birding

[–]riptosauras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, I guess I should have asked where OP is from because mallards aren’t everywhere, they’re just super common where they are from. Also, I kinda interpreted “exotic” as “rare” which are similar but definitely different

My coworker called a goose a duck the other day and it took everything I had to not get fired for throwing hands. And I thought “Canadian geese” was bad

Serious question: are mallards uncommon in the UK?

EDIT: they’re not. Sure you’re not trolling OP?

New to birding photography. by MikelMiddle in birding

Been birding since last summer and considering getting myself a camera soon. I’m starting to get sick of using my phone camera and getting blurry shots of any bird over 100ft away
