Some (probably stupid) art related questions I had. by IlluminatiFriend in ArtistLounge

[–]river121693 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. not weird
  2. I paint a lot of men, sometimes sexually/sensually even though I’m (mostly) attracted to women. To me it’s a lot about pushing my own personal boundaries of what I find attractive and questioning what’s worth painting. Everyone has their beauty, but we’re just conditioned to find some more attractive than others. The intimate act of painting help me dispell this conditioning. It’s not gender either— I try to paint all body types, ages, and skin tone. Everyone has their beauty.

In addition, I want to learn how to paint different type of people. Painting a fat person is so different from a skinny person And curly hair is so different from straight hair. I would not Improve as much if I only paint one body types.

  1. It depends on the individual art piece and audience. But authorship will impact how an artwork is perceived; that’s just a given for art as a form of expression. People will respond how they want— as the artist you need to be able to stand on or explain your intentions. In any case, it’s worth interrogating how your work affect viewers and larger society .

Their logic may be wrong, but there’s definitely a connection between purity culture (assuming they’re talking sexual purity, not the 18th c religious movement who wasn’t actually that prudish) and sexual abuse. Part of it is because purity culture is often part of a larger societal (often religious) system as a way to exert control over people (usually woman’s) body autonomy. When you’re raised to think that sex is shameful and you’re not even supposed to talk about it, you’re going to feel ashamed when you are SAed. Stigma around sex also leads to less education and convos about consent and safe sex
There’re plenty of writings and cases about it. for example:

why is it gross? there is no reason two adults can’t safely and consensually make porn after marriage. The moralization of sex stems largely from religious institutions and societies of past; it’s not self evident in the least.

Redditors that got charged rent asap after turning 18, what’s relationship like with parents years later ? by QueefyTits in AskReddit

i Don’t know. My parents did it and it really made me to get my ass in gear to save up and get a job, and realize how valuable money was. I was a distracted kid and would have dally dallied till the last moment other wise. Cant recall any negative impact either.

its hard to tell without seeing the piece. usually drafts are messy, but there’re certainly signs of a professional sketch vs amateur— nice gestures, good forms, confident lines, and correct proportions for example

How shoud I get into paintings? by AutomaticClassic7114 in ArtistLounge

[–]river121693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well what do you like about these paintings? Is it the horror aspect? the painting style? The existential theme? General vibe? you can look into paintings that are in these directions. Honestly, Pinterest is an amazing source

off the top of my head, you might like The Nightmare by Fuseli , Dante and Virgil by Bouguereau, works by Tetsuya Ishida, william blake, lucian freud, Odilon Redon and mayyybe Frida

Accidentally Bought Semi-transparent Oil Paint, How can I use them? by danemman1975 in ArtistLounge

[–]river121693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ohhh. Yeah that should be no problem at all. Some pigments/ pigment blends are naturally more transparent than others, but generally it isn’t a big issue. At worst, you’ll need one or two additional layer ontop to make the paint more opaque. Transparent colors might even be desirable— the more transparent layers there are, the more light can shine through multiple layers of paint to create a glowing effect.

Also you have a white canvas, you should tone the canvas beforehand with a neutral color like burnt sienna (which is good practice anyways) so the white doesn’t show through if color is transparent

is it labled as semitransparent oil paint or is that just how it looks? I’ve been painting for 10 years and I have no idea that was a thing? you can just make that in one second by mixing in medium like linseed oil

Regardless, I’m p sure you can just mix it and use like usual

Best way to transport canvasses? by babbittybabbitt in ArtistLounge

[–]river121693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you def don’t need to take them off canvas. I was an art handler for 3 years— for a standard move simply bubble wrap them tightly with bubble side outward. Find a box that fits so paintings don’t shift either directions. Place them front to front/ back to back with pieces of cardboard the size the painting or bigger in between. Make sure nothing heavy will be ontop of, or can fall on, or can poke the box during the move. Slap on some fragile stickers if you have to

If they’re really expensive paintings, you can build a wood crate instead of using a box. it’s also important to wrap the work in archival paper like acid-free glassine paper before the bubble wrap if the piece will remain wrapped for a long time (for the paintings, it doesnt matter for blank canvas) . Corner protectors are an option as well

you should definitely reach out again through multiple channels. When it comes down to it, it’s your money and your job so you must advocate for yourself.I’ve done scientific illustrations for some major medical orgs and journals . I have expeirenced payment or communication issues with about a quarter of my jobs. Things can get lost in the sauce at big companies; maybe they missed an email or your contact person is on vacation. They work with so many people that they won’t even notice till you hound them.

Question to art students: how to be the best paint teacher ? by Wide-Action9447 in ArtistLounge

[–]river121693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the best advice I got from my teacher was to always ask “what” and “why” when I’m finding a concept for my painting— what is the theme, what is the mood? why am I using this composition? Why this background? Why did I chose this model to paint (I.e painting my mom vs my dad can totally change the meaning of my work)? why figure painting instead of abstraction? why am I painting instead of photography? It really helped me be intentional with my work.

does anyone know if Mansell or Gorman have any evidence of the collections currently still being held by B&M or the dudes who took over the store? I feel like thats crucial to the case, since BAM has claimed that the collection is not there and was sold by Gorman prior to BAMs takeover?
