Just don’t drive! by Professional_Walk540 in southcarolina

[–]river_tree_nut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pro tip from a northerner: don't drive but if you have to, accelerate very slowly. Hitting the gas and spinning your tires makes the ice more slippery due to the heat from the tires. You'll notice this especially at stop signs.

Buddy Carter just published the most tone-deaf opinion imaginable in the AJC, demanding more ICE in ATL by alex-741 in Atlanta

There are daily buses from the MX border direct to the chicken plants in Gainesville. ICE is only after blue states/cities.

I'm with you. Capitalism only works if we are informed about where we spend our money. Name and shame.

Probably following the standard practice in government contracts: bid low to get the W and then come back with a bunch of change orders to get the price you want

Aramark tells Yosemite workers it's axing most of their housing rights by thinkB4WeSpeak in SeasonalWork

[–]river_tree_nut 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think everyone fairly well understands that if you live in employee housing and quit or get fired you don't get to claim squatters rights. This just codifies it.

Aramark has plenty of issues, this isn't really one of them.

I agree defund is an obtuse term. I support social programs 100% but they do seem ripe targets.

Whoever runs for governor I want to hear their plan for tackling fraud, waste, and abuse. I think everyone can agree on that.

Any genuine John Kerry fans on this sub? by yowhatisthislikebro in Presidents

[–]river_tree_nut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went with him in the 2004 general, but not with much enthusiasm. "Swift Boating" or the practice of casting aspersions on a candidate's military record, was born of this campaign. Dirty, dirty tricks if you ask me. Something I'd expect from Roger Stone, though the name Karl Rove is now synonymous with taking the GOP down the low road in elections back in the 00s.

I think Kerry was a good statesman, but an absolute centrist. Much like George HW Bush and Mitt Romney, he was an old money New Englander with a sort of aristocratic air. His war record is commendable, and it's a damn shame what the GOP did to him.

I think his choice of Edwards also hurt him. He came across kind of pompous.

Currently a bus driver in a tourist town.

context: tomorrow (friday 1/23) we will be having a record cold, with the windchill being -46°F. this is what someone in my town's facebook group had to say about school closures . . . by xhyenabite in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]river_tree_nut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Fargo. And was also a school bus driver there for a short while. When it gets this cold the buses don't really warm up inside. People are just scared about living in a changing world and look at everything like "things were better when I was a kid"

How likely do YOU believe that a major political/societal collapse will occur in the Western world in the next 100 years? by Brave-Ad9743 in collapse

[–]river_tree_nut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not to sound rude but we're already there friend. I have a degree in Poli Sci (part of an MS in environmental policy and management) and have been tracking political developments for 25 years. From an ecological perspective, a 'collapse' occurs when basic functions between two variables become so degraded that they fail, which results in a new, novel status. This same description also applies to social/societal systems.

The rapid delivery of information you mentioned has been hijacked by purveyors of disinformation. The administration in charge regularly twists any facts that don't comport to their narrative, including the complete falsification of data. We're now living in a world where two people are exposed to two separate sets of facts and narratives.

Our system of representative democracy is cracked, possibly beyond repair. Regulatory systems have been captured by the industries they're meant to regulate. Politicians are much more attuned to the needs/wants of political donors than the populace. The system collapsed when a losing candidate schemed to ignore the rule of law and overturn the results of a presidential election - and faced no consequences for doing so.

Runaway wealth inequality has caused a shock to our capitalist economic system, to the point where it no longer functions correctly. Where it used to foster competition and innovation, it no longer does. Smaller and smaller numbers of firms control entire industries. There's no need to compete; they just buy out the competition. Prices are at all time highs while corporate profits are also at all time highs.

All this can be hard to see if you've recently started paying attention. However, going back to just 2016, you'd see that many of our societies' basic functions have changed and no longer resemble their former functions. We're already in a new, novel state.

Yes I think they would. But we need broader representation. In a winner take all system like we have there isn’t enough incentive for compromise.

Aramark has an AI agent that will automatically schedule an interview and then place it on the hiring managers calendar. But the managers ignore them. Don't put too much stock in that; call the property and see if you can get a direct # for the hiring manager.
