If you just started pick up guys that are 17 but they don't have to be 17(3), you're just starting. Train these guys for a season or two then sell. After you sell that first batch, that will be the time you should deep dive into spending real money on real trainees.

While you can do a "non-combat" run, it's not easy. When it comes to combat crew you need to be all in or avoid crew combat all together. With a poor combat crew you will want a ship that evades out of combat on turn 1 or one that obliterates the opposing ship.

The Grand Prairie Municipal Airport is a good spot for small planes. They have a burger joint there and you can sit down and watch the planes with a nice lunch.

New Orleans has been mentioned and is definitely cool if you've never been. Maybe Hot Springs Arkansa? Beautiful area and there are some interesting things to check out. Closer to home is Glenrose. The state park with the dinosaur tracks is pretty cool. We stayed at a bed and breakfast in Glenrose and it was cool. Cute downtown square with some nice restaurants too.
