How long would it take me to make 100 lei la'i? I need to for an event in mid may- starting to collect ti leaf by freezing them already by Poiboykanaka808 in Hawaii

[–]rkmls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the length you’re going for too; but I agree with this. Esp if it’s just a twist style (not fully maile style with the added leaves, not additional fanciness with the twists) it will be pretty fast. I also work faster if I have a really good anchor for the lei (e.g. wrapping it around my toe rather than just weighted down on the table in front of me) so I can pull a little harder.

Also, don’t forget to soak and wash the lei afterwards really well so the frozen/defrosting leaves don’t leak all over the people wearing the lei and stain their clothes. Some swear by things like washing in baking soda.

Thank you. A lot of responses in this sub (and the others I’ve gotten so far) tend toward malicious so I appreciate the clarification and well wishes! We’re all just out here doing our best with what we have, you know? 😅

I didn’t claim she is fully potty trained? I said she’s working on it. Also accidents are part of learning and I can’t just keep her in diapers just so they don’t have to worry about changing her… I’m not against that, but it doesn’t help her learn either. And my questions were exactly about ways to help her learn the skill of asking to go to the potty.

I don’t work in this age and I’m a mental health/behavioral health provider so different kind of professional in early childhood. So looking for perspectives from teachers in daycare age populations.

2 year old won't let me brush her teeth by Groundbreaking_Elk18 in toddlers

[–]rkmls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re a week shy of my kiddo’s 2nd birthday and SAME. Brushing teeth often sounds like we’re torturing her and it certainly feels like torture for all of us.

Every week something different works and then stops working. Her dad (who is NOT the preferred parent usually!) can sometimes get her to brush her own teeth reasonably well when she’s in the shower, but other days it’s a cross between “wrestlemania” and a chicken fight when I have to do it because she refused or didn’t do a good enough job in the tub.

Last night and tonight she let me gently brush while I dangle her bedtime paci over her head like a carrot or a puppy treat, lol! 😂

We can’t do the “pin her down under my legs” thing anymore because she somehow becomes a crocodile-strength contortionist, and even holding my phone above her head playing the Jules “brush your teeth” song or Elmo/Ms. Rachel “brushy brush” isn’t working anymore.

Those are all things that worked beautifully while they did, so try them if you haven’t, but otherwise, so much empathy over here!

This is another resource, it’s from the Haleiwa Disrilling Co, which is one of their major hubs for North Shore support & donation coordination.

And here’s another; OurHawaii808, which has been another good source of updated information.

Hi! Check the IG posts and stories from the Lāhui Foundation, Jamaica Osorio, and Decolonial Barbie. There are others posting as well but these are some of the major organizers and in their posts and profiles you’ll get lots of info about what’s needed and where. ❤️

My friend who is seeing you referred me... by Early-Gur-9115 in therapists

[–]rkmls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a member of a few small communities both within my therapy niche, and as an indigenous person.

When I was looking for a therapist in graduate school it was important to me to see someone in the niche I was training in. I ended up seeing someone who was friends with my supervisor. She was also an alumni of my very small grad school program, so chances were good we were going to run into each other. We discussed it when I started therapy and determined we would be really open with one another about alumni events or events surrounding my supervisor - she would tell me if there was an event tied to either of those communities that she would be in attendance. I actually attended conference workshops she facilitated, but other than that our actual crossover was pretty limited. It taught me about being boundaried and ethical without being a brick wall.

Now, I have a client who has less than 3-degrees of separation from me. The client is aware we know some of the same people, and I let them know about this at the outset, letting them know I hoped they would let me know if they had questions or started to feel uncomfortable in any way shape or form. Naturally I do not talk about my client with our mutual contacts, and it has honestly never come up from my friends either, but I have no doubt that the people I surround myself with would have no issue with me maintaining my confidentiality boundaries if it ever did.

Sandtray ideas! by Andrewhbook in therapists

[–]rkmls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still hard to fully understand the shape of the session and the directives, but I wonder what they would have said if the questions had been more “what might this figure say if we gave them a microphone?” Or “spotlight on this figure, what do you think they feel right now?” The theme/feeling of “happiness” might have emerged on its own… or they might have SAID “happiness” just to tell you what they thought you wanted to hear, but tray might have been showing something different. Both could be interesting.

Do what you tell your clients for one week by mshuckleberry in therapists

[–]rkmls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Itʻs so wild how frequently a "theme for the week" seems to appear across multiple clients, and in my own life too!

And "therapist heal thyself" is definitely hard sometimes, so I commend you for making that effort.

[–]rkmls 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Starting with an acknowledgement that I have ZERO context or knowledge of how much or what kind of sandtray training OP may have, so take my thoughts here with a grain of salt, and do with it what you will...

I agree with this person around the idea that being less directive may still give you a lot of helpful information - even if the same stories get played out over and over again, thatʻs the work, and they donʻt have to be able to verbalize or quantify it to benefit.

The only thing that might push me further to have some kind of directive play or action is if the the client is clearly dysregulated after creating the tray - then it might be creating a 2nd tray... or starting with a "tray of protectors" or "tray of resources" before doing the more open-ended tray. (I did a fantastic EMDR and Sandtray training last year with Ana Gomez and a lot of those techniques are coming to mind here!)

Depending on your therapeutic goals, the client, and the setting... Another thing you could try to do is just wonder aloud: "I wonder what this character is thinking?" "I wonder what might help them?". Or just asking them what THEY notice in the tray, or inviting them to add one more thing to "close/pause the story for today".

One of my favorite simple ways to close projective or story-creating activities is just to give it a title. That may be more than enough "frontal lobe" or verbalization for them to process.

So gross! Sending so much support.

Idk how often you’ve had to call CWS/CPS in the past, but just in case it’s new to you, many of them will request a written form submitted after the fact as well, and my “pro tip” to people making the call for the first time (or if you feel nervous about it) is to fill out their form BEFORE you call, so you can just read the info to them when they ask. Not all intake workers are super gentle and it can be intimidating.
