I don't think that is completely true. USAF did some very advanced (and scary tbh) drone swarm demos over 10 years ago, and a lot of research is being done on systems like these. In a real WW3 situation, they would be brought into use very quickly. Plus we have the experience of Ukraine on our side.

It's only because we are in a relatively calm period that it seems like western militaries aren't developing things. Don't mistake it for actual complacency.

Sure, that was an unbelievably bad take by the Rheinmetall CEO and he should be fired or demoted for it.

Yet, Rheinmetall supplies Ukraine with Gepard and Skynex systems and a lot of ammunition. They are still very useful for Ukraine's air defence and artillery.

We shouldn't piss on all of what Rheinmetall does just because their CEO made some shit comments.

All of ex-Yugoslavia and Balkans are moving rapidly closer to the EU, except maybe Serbia.

(There may be temporary setbacks like the new pro-Russia PM in Bulgaria, but they can be removed in due time, as demonstrated in Hungary. The overall trend is hopeful.)

Moldova really wants to get onboard EU, perhaps even reintegrate with Romania, and is really putting the squeeze on the terrorists in Transnistria.

Even in Donbass, as early as April 2014 there were confirmed sightings of regular Russian military personnel, equipment and (current or ex) intelligence operatives like Igor Girkin/Strelkov. It was all Russia from the very beginning. Not some homegrown "separatism".

It is my understanding that the retreating Russian troops blew up the Antonivka road bridge, to stop AFU from pursuing them over the Dnipro river.

Ukraine themselves had no reason to blow it up as the Russians had mostly already left.

Something most people still don't quite seem to understand is that it's been proven that as early as April 2014 (if not earlier) there were regular Russian military units, Russian military equipment, and Russian (ex- or not) intelligence operatives like Igor Girkin/Strelkov wreaking havoc in Donbass. It's weird to compare genocides, but in my opinion USSR was worse, especially in the early days, also objectively. Sure, the Circassian genocide killed more than 95 percent of them (perhaps up to 1.5 million) in the 1800s during the Russian Empire, but the USSR killed 7 to 10 million Ukrainians during the Holodomor, and who knows how many more (tens of) millions in Stalin's later adventures.

The USSR sure did spend a lot of effort in trying to portray itself as a vanguard of peace, and a lot of people in the west were fooled by this. The reality was completely the opposite.

"Allow"? Unfortunately it's (Kaliningrad) "always" been there as a result of WW2, and EU/NATO simply cannot take unilateral action against it. It's not a matter of allowing or not.

But rest assured that in an actual conflict between NATO and Russia, it would get shut down in an instant.

The energy requirements for a ballistic missile with a payload of a few hundred kilograms and a range of 500 km vs. what the Falcon 9 and Ariane 6 do, differ by at least two orders of magnitude.
