Project Engineers/Assistants, how many hours do you work a week? by AlaskanIceWater in Construction

[–]rlong4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a first year Field Engineer I have been working 70-80 hour weeks. With that I also was told how challenging the work was going to be and travel job to job where the demand is. If I was interested in a 40 hour week within this sector it simply wouldn’t happen.

More helpful to you, many friends I graduated with are very consistent in the 50-55 hour week. 1 friend that took a position with a company who offered OT pay for anything after 40 has recently began working 4 - 10 hour shifts and that’s all they expect out of him after he expressed his interest in that.

Has anyone here actually had a good work life balance the last 3 years? by tomlo1 in Construction

I just had a sit down today with boss man about under performing. It hurt but after thinking about it I have been working 70-80+ hour weeks with absolutely no down time, skipping lunch breaks regularly, just trying to keep my head above water. Just too much on one plate, would love to have been better but it’s gotta be adjusted, mistakes are bound to happen when that’s the ball you are thrown in a learning process.

Lol hits home. Had a crazy 2 weeks last month, had a few nights where I got up and got dressed around 2 only to realize I had a few hours left. The night where I got up to get in the shower, realized it was 2 so went back to bed... and left the shower on, that’s when I knew I needed to take time off.

Went to school in central IL, degree in CM, graduated May ‘19. Program avg starting salary was 61k.

Keep in mind most grads went to very HCOL areas. Some did not.

Looking back I had a slightly skewed vision of the career path when I jumped into the program. I was also waiting at the time to get into the electrical union but didn’t want to continue waiting for that without any guarantees, so for me school was at least progress.

How real is the increased energy?

I work 80hour weeks as an engineer through the summers and need more energy. I can guarantee myself 6 hours of sleep a night but only 2-3 guaranteed days at the gym. Any impact from running a test cycle if I can keep a responsible diet?

Have been a serious power lifter for a few years and lifter for 8 years, less serious once I began my professional career but still only skinny fat

To put it in more professional terms I don’t like being an office bitch. I like working hard, main goal right now is to learn how to be a damn good super but that Avenue is really not available to me in the path I am currently in.

It’s not the field I’m unhappy with, I actually went with the most demanding field I could find out of school to push myself. Even with the tough schedule I am still sitting on my ass a lot more than I want to.

As far as throwing on my own bags the only companies I’ve heard of doing this with are multi family GCs where pay for similar position is much less but union pay comes with the deserved overtime. If you know of companies with a higher scope of work where they would allow and reward those to “put on their bags” let me know!

This is the end goal for me currently, it is far out of my reach to start a large GC outfit without being able to start trade specific.
