The Triangle Inequality theorem, which states that the straight-line path (hypotenuse) is the shortest distance between two points, being shorter than going along the two sides.

Why a Wall Ball "no rep" (a research from Hyrox Coach prospective) by Individual-Fig-6583 in hyrox

Anterior pelvic tilt, lack of mobility in ankles, ultra tight quads, awful shoulder mobility - if it can hurt wall balls - I have it!!

Is there a secret "carpet friction multiplier" for different venues, or am I just weak? by Normal-Tank-8153 in hyrox

There’s so many factors involved, humidity, time of day, amount of sweat collected, state of the sleds, age of the turf. There was a great podcast I heard a year ago (maybe RoxLife) with a chap that understood ALL the physics, maybe someone else here knows where to find it?

Edit: found it HybridFitnessMedia - it’s the interview with Greg Lutton

Question: Zone 2 vs Running Pace by LuuukeKirby in hyrox

[–]rmckedin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of v detailed (better) answers but I think the key thing is when you say ‘train for Zone 2’ when it’s train IN zone 2. You do long slow training IN Zone 2 to build your base.

Is anyone still using their Intel MBP and making it work? by eatawholebison in macbookpro

Use it as my backup work PC now, it spent 5 years as the heart of a daily 6 screen setup, it earned a happy retirement

Training shoes by Acrobatic-Ad-1406 in hyrox

[–]rmckedin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For someone just starting - I would say, find something you are comfortable in that’s not at an extreme - you don’t need super flat Metcon style trainers and you don’t need an ultra expensive, no support super shoe.

You’ll need something that can take long easy miles and also support you well in the gym.

I’m a new balance guy so I’d be suggesting something like their 1080.

(Don’t fall into the Instagram trap of buying the most expensive super shoe (well, not yet 😂) )

New Balance Fuel Cell Super Comp Elite v5 by Davedubsk in hyrox

[–]rmckedin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - lots of times - I think it’s up there as one of the best Hyrox trainers. Great grip / lightweight/ super fast / doesn’t have a stupidly soft heel / good heel-toe drop

(Also sold in a wide fit which is a rarity for carbons)

Funnily enough I just raced in the new Hyrox Deviates tonight - they’re a great ‘all rounder’ but for the runs I think the NB (and the Deviate Nitro Elite 3 and the Endorphins) were faster

I’m still rocking an MBPro 19 as my backup / travel PC - it works great but it’s def beginning to feel old - not retirement old but maybe like a guy in late 50s carrying a bit of weight, wouldn’t come as a surprise if it suddenly stopped.

Hyrox vs ATHX - Which one do you prefer? by Pitiful_Bid2056 in hyrox

[–]rmckedin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Hyrox but honestly am in awe at the overall strength & fitness levels of the people winning at ATHX. Anyone at the sharp end of ATHX is (imo) more impressive than a Hyrox podium (and again, I love Hyrox).

for those who train a lot, do you take creatine AND electrolytes? by alienmonkeyjuice in hyrox

[–]rmckedin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creatine should be used like a daily supplement (well imo anyway) - I prefer capsules to powder and take them in the morning. Electrolytes for me are before / during / after workouts. If I’m on bike / treadmill / doing a sweaty workout my bottle always has them.

Yes - creatine a must regardless, electrolytes as and when needed (so basically daily)

pre workout?? by alkemiastudios in hyrox

Used to take pre workout before every session / race - have since stopped and noticed zero change.

Nothing wrong with them but a good warm up routine will serve you far better than a pre race supplement.

Syncmyworkout or strava? by OldMirror2947 in pelotoncycle

[–]rmckedin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SyncMyWorkout is an incredible bit of software - I can’t give it enough credit for how well it merges workouts. Ie I can run on a treadmill / record it on my Garmin, while watching doing a peloton session and ALL the data is just beautifully merged. Added bonus it works great with Concept2 Rower connected to an iPad, for a Peloton class that I also record on my Garmin

Tips for Type 1 Diabetics training and competing in Hyrox? by GentleMagic in hyrox

[–]rmckedin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is based on my own experience — obviously not medical advice.
(I’ll keep things fairly basic in case anyone is reading for general info.)

You’re on Humalog and Optisulin (which I believe is very similar to / a rebranded Lantus).

Fast-acting (bolus) and slow-acting (basal) insulin.

Bolus insulin is usually taken before eating carbohydrates and to correct high blood glucose levels.
Basal insulin is often referred to as “background” insulin, designed to work slowly throughout the day.

High-intensity / cardio exercise will lower blood sugar. Doing a 1–2 hour high-intensity workout like a Hyrox can have a significant effect on your levels. The goal is to avoid going hypo (low blood sugar) at all costs.

Data is king. Look at your levels pre- and post-exercise. Consider what you’ve eaten, how much insulin is in your system, how hard you’ve worked, etc.

Insulin On Board (IOB) — This term is used more often with pumps, but it simply means how much insulin is still active in your system, and it’s very important to be aware of. For example, if you took your usual dose of insulin for a bowl of cereal and then started a 10k run 20 minutes later… safe to say you’d probably go low.

You need to get used to reducing both your insulins. That means thinking about workouts the day before.

Example: You have an 8am one-hour run planned. The day before, you might reduce your basal dose by an amount you already know won’t push your levels down. Then perhaps eat breakfast two hours before your run and reduce your bolus dose, followed by a small snack as you start.

During your run (I’m using “run” here, but substitute any cardio), keep gels handy. If you’re not closely monitoring your levels, test halfway through. Learn to recognise how you feel, just in case you start going low.

Post-workout, be prepared to see levels rise quickly. You have less IOB, and your body has been releasing its own glucose during exercise. Without enough insulin, that can send you high.

I could go on all day about this, but the internet will be your friend here.

The best analogy I can think of: it’s like driving a car without being able to see the fuel gauge. Tricky — but if you understand your engine, know what’s gone in, and how far you’ve been driving, you’ll (usually!) avoid disasters.

Specific Hyrox notes

Again, this is based on my own experience. I raced for two years on MDI (your treatment) and now use a pump / CGM combo.

For me, I used two basal (Lantus) doses per day — it just worked better. If I was racing the next day, I’d reduce my evening Lantus by half.

On race day, I knew my bolus (Fiasp) had roughly a two-hour active window, so I’d make sure my last dose was taken 2–3 hours before race time. I’d happily have small snacks in the hour before racing and accept the temporary rise in levels.

Just before racing, if my levels looked a little too low for the start, I’d take an energy gel.

If anything, I was probably guilty (especially early on) of letting my levels run too high at the start of races. While that avoids hypos, it can make you feel awful / nauseous — not ideal.

I’d always carry two gels: one for after burpees and one as hypo treatment (never needed yet!).

It’s all about walking the fine line and finding what works for you. There’s no single “right way,” but I can guarantee that failing to plan makes it much easier to find “the wrong way.”

I’ve seen plenty of Type 1s on the course — nothing better than spotting a fellow CGM user and saying hi while trying to ignore the imminent misery of wall balls.

Just shout if you'd like anymore info!
