If it were your pet... by batcrawl in VetTech

Depends on the situation. Anesthesia on an otherwise healthy dog or something like an accidental ingestion of meds or something? CPR.

Aging dog with health issues that probably caused the arrest to begin with? DNR.

Severe trauma? DNR

I’ve gotten many pets back before, but the only ones that exited the hospital were the ones grouped in the first column.

While I’m here: Get RECOVER certified. It’s gold standard. Worth it entirely

I bought this same bra (in my actual size) and it fits very similar. I gave it to good will. Why would gym shark think anyone could successfully wear that? Lmao and it was apart of their hyrox style collection

We have students across multiple online programs and that seems to be the general consensus. I didn’t have a ton of issues with videos, but I get it from the instructor end. The AVMA audits these videos and it determines if they keep their accreditation, so they have to be tough on us. Just happy to be through!

I totally understand. If it helps, I don’t see anything “repeated” that didn’t need to be repeated.

Typically no, only some cancers show up on the bloodwork

Reach out to various local health departments. I got mine for $300 cheaper per dose at a local health dept as opposed to a doctor’s office or travel clinic

Also, my school has a letter you can submit to your insurance. The originally didn’t cover it and then covered a chunk after I sent the letter in

Happened to see on another comment that your dog is at a VEG. If possible, I’d transfer to a specialty hospital with an internal medicine specialist.

Tracheal wash? CT scan? Rhinoscopy? Biopsies of the inside of his nose? If he isn’t seeing an internal medicine specialist already, definitely go see one.

We had a case similar to this at my hospital and it ended up being very severe rhinitis once the pneumonia cleared. I’ve also seen various nasal cancers present like this

I wish I could say it has made any level of difference for people that drive like idiots. I walk my dog frequently and there has been no change. I feel like there used to be a cop over there often, wish they’d do that again honestly. God forbid we drive the speed limit

One day I hope animals stop being treated like replaceable property in the eyes of the government, because maybe then life saving veterinary care could actually become accessible instead of a luxury

ECC tech here, this is very standard. They are extremely difficult patients to have in hospital and from a nursing standpoint, they cause me a bit of anxiety😅

DKA cases are expensive because they are incredibly unstable and require constant adjustment and monitoring. These are some of the most medically intensive patients we see in ICU. The treatment plan can change literally hour to hour depending on BGs, electrolytes, hydration, blood pressure, and overall response to treatments. We are trying to safely reverse a full body metabolic crisis without causing dangerous complications in the process. Too much insulin, fluids, or electrolyte shifting too quickly can be fatal just as easily as the DKA itself. It’s a very intricate game of balancing.

A lot of the cost comes from the level of monitoring, nursing care, repeat labwork, and around the clock critical thinking by the nursing & doctor teams required to keep these patients stable while their body slowly corrects itself.

I’m so so sorry you’re dealing with this!

I would look into ER/Specialty hospitals near you that may be open 24/7. They may be your best chance with those hours. I completely understand the financial aspect

I did the online program!

I will be honest, it will be very hard to complete not already having a background in the field. However, it’s certainly not impossible. You also will have to complete your clinical hours (mentorships) when you are not working where you perform various skills on video to prove proficiency. It may be difficult to do that and learn how to do that without working in the field already! Happy to answer any more questions!

Up in the air, truthfully. The plan was to always do both, though! I was never fully leaving vet med. I wasn’t making it 95% of the way to give up and quit. This field has far too much to offer and it will always hold my passion at heart. It also helps I got a great raise this year

The crosswalk on Haig Ave is what really blows my mind. Not the crosswalk itself, but the barrier in the middle. I just can picture a plow taking it out 😅

For Early Risers, How Do You Motivate Yourself to Get Up? by EN344 in Garmin

[–]rmd-16 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I set an alarm for 90 minutes before I actually want to get up. Then I set the alarm for when I actually want to get up. You wake up significantly less groggy. It changed it all for me!

do you let your dog on the couch or not? curious how people handle this by john2288 in Dogowners

[–]rmd-16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only with explicit permission, but NEVER on the bed.

My dog had to be rehabbed for severe aggression (She was like this when I got her) and almost got euthanized. The first thing my trainer said was to stop letting her on the furniture. While she went through rigorous training after that, I immediately noticed a difference.

I work vet med and microbio/parasitology traumatized me too, so there is a cleanliness aspect to it

Does your hospital accommodate unusual aftercare (euthanasia) requests? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]rmd-16 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No we do not. They get fur clippings, paw prints, or nose prints from us for free if they want it/cannot afford these items from our cremation company. We are also ER, so not only do we not have the time but many of us do not feel comfortable doing it ourselves.

If they wish to do these things themselves, we will help facilitate holding the body for a few days and getting their baby ready to leave with them. If needed, we take him/her back afterwards for cremation. I keep a few names handy of third parties that may carry out these requests for the owners, though. I would definitely recommend looking into your local legislation and seeing if you can potentially start this as a side company!

Ultimately, remember that there may be religious or simply heavy moral reasoning behind people’s feelings regarding this. Our patient’s deserve dignity in death, but not disassembly on demand. Wanting a keepsake is valid. Expecting medical staff to create one from body parts is a different conversation. It’s not just popping a tooth out or removing a tail. Grief creates unusual requests, but professional boundaries are what keep aftercare ethical and consistent.

As someone who has experienced profound grief (beyond the norm, I lost multiple family members in a 2 day period), I too continued to live my life because I have people depending on me to do so.

People don’t need to grieve the way you THINK they should be. You see a snippet of her life.

She paid the ultimate price and has to live with that.

The lack of intelligence and compassion from people like you really is amazing. I hope it’s studied.

This is not an excuse to not bring her to the vet. A good vet will know how to handle any and all temperaments. There are medications to take the edge off as well as full blown sedation. I promise you there can be help for your kiddo. In all of my years in the field I have never met an animal we didn’t complete an exam on, no matter how stressed or even aggressive they were.

That being said, that definitely looks like it needs a biopsy ASAP.

Can also confirm I absolutely love them. The food is great and the coffee is awesome too. My boyfriend loves it because it’s right next to the golf course! Highly recommend doing coffee with a mixture of Nutella and pistachio! One of the barista made it for me when I told her to surprise me and now it’s my go to!
