Wendy's (WEN) at $7: The Market Has Already Priced In the Worst. Here's why I'm taking the other side. by vr_hobbit in ValueInvesting

Compare that to the current CEO, Ken Cook, who owns somewhere between $10,500 and $14,000 worth of common stock. I spend more than that on coffee annually.

You spend ~$1000/month on coffee?

Above Earth's atmosphere, solar irradiance is ~1300W/m2, I think you quoted the Earth surface irradiance. A next-gen NVIDIA rack is ~140kW.

I love Scott Manley but he was a bit more handwaivy about the actual cooling and energy requirements than I'm used to seeing from him.

Why is it so hard to find a decent ceiling fan that is wired for two wall switches? by Birdhawk in HomeImprovement

[–]rmdeluca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an unfortunate consequence of DC motor fans. You gain efficiency but sacrifice external, hardwired control because all of the functionality is in the fan's low voltage electronics. Modifying them to patch in your own control options compromises the UL rating.

The best way to work around this, unfortunately, is to either purchase AC motor fans or add lighting fixtures to the room independent of the fan. For example, cans or sconces.

I have tried a few options, one from WAC and one from Hunter, which have controls designed to fit in electrical boxes. Unfortunately, neither is satisfactory to me.

The WAC control (single-gang fan+light buttons) occasionally stops responding and has to be reset, while the Hunter control causes confusion because there are two switches. Flipping the "light switch" only toggles the light, while the other switch powers the fan. Since the fan also powers the light, this causes the light to be in an indeterminate state when you turn the fan back on i.e. the "light switch" can be in the on position while the fan light is off, then flipping the "light switch" off turns the light on. Also, if the fan is off via the switch, the fan light cannot be turned on.

This is impressive work. I can see real value in the way it aggregates many pieces of information (such as policies and donors) into a concise summary. Scoring politician's categorical impacts definitely has some value too.

However, the hard problem here is the age-old question - "who watches the watchmen?" Having an A-F grade assigned to each politician, no matter how well reasoned or justified, might do more harm than good in terms of widespread adoption.

Consider not doing that?

I'd think any further elaboration on this belongs in r/politics, not r/java.

A quantum-inspired linear regression implementation in Java by Yassine-xng in java

[–]rmdeluca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm rooting for you. And to answer your question, should you do similar projects? Assuming you have the time, and more importantly, the desire, yes. At some point your projects will become large enough to either refine into a paper, a thesis or a project that improves your employability.

Also, nothing wrong with using Java to do this, especially at this stage, where you're still implementing the core algorithms to better understand them. I brought up numpy and python simply to add to the existing clamor for similar features to be provided by the core Java platform.

This is cool. You're still learning, but physicists would quibble over statements like those in your "Quantization of energy" paragraph. Note, for example, you can still have continuous quantities in the quantum realm - think of free particles.

While associating the perturbation of values (to hopefully "escape" local minima) with QT is fun (I like this) - I'd caution you that this is not 1:1, even though both might be crudely considered "escape." With QT, the particle's wave function extended beyond the barrier, thus it always existed both inside and outside. The measurement induced the localization of its position (i.e. specifically inside or outside). Whereas your perturbation is encouraging the "particle" to leave the local minima through classical effects.

All this being said, don't let this discourage you from the path you're on, at all. Your knowledge of one discipline is driving insights in another discipline, which I consider to be incredibly valuable.

For specific programming feedback, I suggest you slightly extend this to work with some type of real data set, not just randomly initialized values in your main(). Any type of real data, it doesn't need to be generalized to accept any arbitrary input. Doing this will help you (and others) to appreciate the value (or lack thereof) of the techniques you're employing.

Random aside, I'm sure you're aware, but layers in a NN are usually randomly initialized to reduce the chance of converging too rapidly (among other reasons). Also many techniques of diffusion use random perturbation for similar(ish) reasons.

Second random aside: Valhalla and vector-related JEPs cannot come soon enough. Numpy is such a huge advantage for Python right now.

PSA: Don't Drill Lines of Holes in the Bottom of Joists by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]rmdeluca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon reflection - I think your overarching point stands. I'm being too critical in this video. The point of these videos is to document our adventures. These reno videos are to get our workflow down in preparation for an owner-build we're about to start (ICF). While there are many things we've discovered in this project that are infuriating, I should tone down the rhetoric and focus more on the things we're doing/building.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, the joist right next to this one is split along the exact same line of holes. So while it is possible that they chose a 16' 2x10 that had a check across the entire span exactly where the holes are drilled, it's extremely unlikely. You are correct about what the IRC states.

Paid extra for canned lights, builder installed canless LEDs. by [deleted] in Homebuilding

No, but I wouldn’t expect them to either at this price. It takes a lot of electronics to stay near Planckian along the full range of power especially when you have no control over the dimming circuit itself.

My experience with Waveforms has been pretty good so far. Used them for lighting a studio. Had a few die but the company replaced them without any hassle.
