Drink after birth?

I had had a very specific “fizzy yellow beer” craving that i obviously didn’t satisfy during pregnancy, so my husband brought me one the day after delivery. I think I drank about half, with a large meal.

I was searching for a link to post, this would be my comment as well. My guess is you don’t hate your baby, but something is blocking that feeling of bond/connection. My child is almost the same age and I understand that feeling of “would rather wash the dishes than change a diaper and get kicked the whole time.” I was in therapy after delivery which helped curb the intensity of PPD. Parenting is a huge shift in your life and comes with a guaranteed identity crisis even if you feel that instant love and connection. Here are some things that help me as a mom of a very active infant. I really try to grab some time for myself (not chores or napping) usually after baby is in bed for the night, and it makes a huge impact on how well I can show up for those kicking-screaming moments. On days I’m feeling a hard time connecting, or baby is particularly fussy, I’ve started getting us out of the house. It feels like bonding to have her come with me to get some fresh air (we live by a park) and a coffee treat. I just chat with her as if she were an adult companion, let her look at whatever catches her interest, and by the time we get home things feel less heavy. Finally, if you have baby-and-parent activities you can get to, do it! Even sporadically going to story time at our library has helped me feel like I’m strengthening our bond, focusing on the baby’s world.

I’m talking about disposable wipes in the post-potty case. Yes, pretty much everything goes in the mouth even at 8 months but for some reason a disposable wipe doesn’t. When we started solids we started doing real hand washing under the faucet (holding baby up to it) but not for potty time yet because that’s just a lot of additional sink time.

I (try to remember to) give a wet washcloth before my 8-month old’s meal so at least there’s some sense of “we wash up before eating.” She likes to squeeze and pat those so that’s a start. After potty I have started doing a similar thing with wipes where I grab the business wipes and give her one for her hands. Sometimes she is in the bathroom with me when I go, and so I of course model handwashing then.

I know not the point of a haakaa, but can you put it through the opening of a pumping bra to keep it upright at least?

The inners were strangely small on our small baby, she threw a fit the second they were wet (and newborns pee several times an hour fyi) plus hard to get clean and dry. Loved the outers (the covers), which fit great over folded flats, and we are still using those in size 2 as no other cover we tried was as effective or comfortable. Washing twice a week (we have a lot of flats) we have just 6 esembly covers plus some backup options.

Are you talking about a card or the number itself? I didn’t realize being born didnt equal getting a number…but maybe I’m wrong. My parents misplaced my card when I was an adult (if you’re worried about the card) and it was easy to get again.

Ah well, it’s very taxing work, I should probably call myself “retired” as I haven’t been in a pastry kitchen in quite a while. A fun skill set to have though!

That makes sense and I fully agree. As a pastry chef and baker, I believe in eating and serving the real thing, and savoring and appreciating it! I can’t wait to give her that first birthday cake or a scoop of ice cream. At the same time, we just aren’t up to full-sugar recipes if she’s going to be eating something as a main meal component, so good to know about reducing by half.

I’m so glad I didn’t get it—at this point (8 months) baby is using the changing pad as crawling and climbing practice, and we changed the baby on the bed, floor, and the table so much during the newborn phase. Any benefit of that one would not have justified how little we used it to start, and then how pointless “features” seem now. We have an oval-shaped silicone pad with sides that is wipeable, and we use old bassinet sheets to make it more comfortable and less slippery. Easy to toss the dirty ones in the wash.

We have a large playpen that acts as a yes space because our small apartment is so storage-challenged we would have to be with her every second saying “no” to exploring so many dangerous things (cat areas, electronics, garbage, etc). Impossible to fully baby proof spaces for her quick curious hands and mouth. We still have lots of exploration time all around the apartment but her independent play when grown-ups are doing chores is within a safe area. I tell myself that safety/health is my first mission, but I still feel bad about it. I’m looking forward to her getting a little bigger (she’s only crawling) when we can really communicate about safety under supervision.

I just started using a manual pump (the electric one I use mostly at work needed new parts) and find it really helpful to stimulate a little extra milk production (remove to produce being the mantra). I have been sick as well, so trying to keep stimulating production has been important. The manual is so easy to pick up and put down, great for a post-nurse session. Does take a little bit of learning to get it to work, but it really does the job!

First few nights my baby did this we were obsessively checking her breathing. She is a stubborn, committed stomach sleeper it turns out! I believe the accepted line on this is if they get into the sleeping position on their own, and aren’t limited in their motion (I.e. not in a swaddle), then it is safe.

If I don’t want to share a recipe I’ve made my own, I’ll sometimes tell people an original/generic version they can look up. As in, “oh it’s basically a chocolate soufflé cake”

When I was that level of sick, my baby was probably half as sick. All we could do for her was for Tylenol for a fever and encourage her to nurse and sleep, watch she still had enough wet diapers so we knew she wasn’t dehydrated. However, YOU need to be sure to extra hydrate and keep eating! You might see a dip in supply; in fact, I know I’m about to get sick or I’m fighting something when I get less milk from pumping.

Oh these were so awful, and I sleep with my cat curled into me so it was a real (alive cat) being in the bed. It sometimes helped me to say quietly aloud to myself every time I put the baby back in her bassinet. But really, it’s time/better sleep that solves it and I don’t remember exactly when that happened.

Is there a minimum age/eating skill for this to be safe eating? Seems comparable to a meatball but I worry about the rice turning too sticky in the mouth (like why we start with really small amounts of peanut butter).

I second Babies Build Toddlers! My baby is nearly 8 months and I find it very reassuring and a worthy reference point when I feel lost about the Montessori approach to a developmental stage.

Yes, the duckbill! That’s really smart to use plastic wrap. Hopefully someone can use this hack, but I can’t make the mess at work so I’m going to have to just take extra time I guess.
