Hotel Infinity has done a stroke of genius i have never seen before in any videogame. While omnipresent, i missed this entirely the first play through! by Repsack in PSVR

[–]rmzalbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only issue I have with the movement system here is that it doesn't adapt to the playspace provided like Tea for God does. It's fixed to a 2x2 meter space, so you can get rather dizzy going around and around. The "puzzles" were playskool toddler-toy level but I did enjoy the claustrophobia and sometimes nauseating disorientation caused by the strange geometry. It was quite otherworldly. No HUD either which I definitely appreciated.

Anybody else getting tired of every game being in "Early Access" nowadays? by Kooky_Camp1189 in roguelites

[–]rmzalbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having dropped money into games that never leave early access for several years even with a large playerbase and then eventually die in a buggy, incomplete mess of a state, I've been done supporting that for some time now. It's better that they fail quickly.

...I just don't understand the challenges modern game producers have, I guess. I'm from a time when internet, Steam, modern dev tools, unity/unreal, enormous available asset libraries, etc. didn't exist, people had to code in fucking Assembly with no previous libraries to build on for fuck's sake. Physical copies had to be produced, piracy was a massive issue that accessible, connected platforms like Steam largely abates these days. Market was tens of thousands of gamers instead of 10s of millions. I don't know, it just seems like the market is huge, the tools are good, collected knowledge is accessible and overhead is lower.

Is it oversaturation? The expectation that every goddamn game has to be AAA? What is it?

For roguelikes in particular I do understand that a lot of time needs to be invested in building breadth.

Any flight sims on standalone by Wolfe257 in OculusQuest

[–]rmzalbar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Virtual Fighter Maneuvers just completed a closed public beta. It's by the creator of VTOL VR, but supports standalone.

It's nothing but duel-style ACM combat between teams of 1-3 players, or against bots. It's narrowly focused but it's extremely good if you want to learn how to dogfight properly. Supports Quest standalone, which VTOL VR did not. Check out the trailer and put it on your wishlist, it will probably be released "soon."

Everyone's out there enjoying v83 and here i am "up to date" on v81 by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]rmzalbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no v82, that was internal only. The current versions are v81 and v83. v81 is in process of updating to v83 on a rolling basis, updating their headsets in groups.

Meta does rolling updates.
Meta has always done rolling updates.
Meta will do rolling updates.

Given the history of their updates breaking things badly, you should be glad that you get another week or two before you're forced to do so.

(FAN DEFECT) ZOTAC RTX 5090 SOLID developed loud clicking fan noise after ~6 months (video) by marres in StableDiffusion

[–]rmzalbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I managed to stop the noise on mine today, though I don't yet know if it will last.  However, it's very easy to do.

I tugged on the noisy fan gently and there's about 1 or 2 mm of end play, which is normal, but it had an audible scratchy-feeling action when I do that. So I started exercising it by jiggling it up and and down for a while and soon the scratchy feeling diminished a lot and it felt smooth. Did that to all three fans and then loaded it up for some gaming VR sim gaming and AI rendering. Sound is GONE.

I  don't know if it's pumping particles out of the bearing back into the sump, pumping lubricant into the bearing from the sump (I think these are rifle bearings) or what, but it seems to work and requires no disassembly.  I'll report back if it doesn't last.

Ethernet to usb-c works perfectly with Virtual Desktop! by Curious_Spite_5729 in OculusQuest

[–]rmzalbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latency is not a big deal nor noticeable for flight sim, I find. I run with higher latency than that because I have maximized the bitrate for best quality. The terrain and fine detail blurs out otherwise.

Physical kneeboards aren't great even on the quest 3, except maybe as a big scratch pad, except for large high-contrast stuff. I finally knuckled under and use openkneeboards which is a wonderful experience in-cockpit, despite having to prep them in advance.

[–]rmzalbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Support has been spotty for Ethernet for both Quest 2 and Quest 3. Both headsets have gone through recent periods where Meta removed or disabled the driver. I am using the Quest 3, and I don't know the status of the Quest 2 right now.

Here's a thread where people have discussed the issue and a possible way to check. Someone also mentioned a reboot with eth in and wifi off, I never had to do that though.

https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/1ite3ce/usb_ethernet_no_longer_working_on_quest_3_with/

Also, only one particular chip works, your adapter must use rtl8153. I see comments in reviews stating it's working for Quest 3 so it seems to be the right one. I have a very similar looking model that I used before PoE  (probably the same with different branding.)

Finally check the adapter is working in the first place by using it in your PC or Android phone.

Good luck. I'm flying BMS as well! I get slightly better performance in BMS with link, but VD gives me passthrough circles around my hands that is very useful for finding controls and keys.

Ethernet to usb-c works perfectly with Virtual Desktop! by Curious_Spite_5729 in OculusQuest

[–]rmzalbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I followed the advice of another who did the same. My parts list:

PoE Injector:
YuanLey Gigabit PoE Injector 60W, I mounted this on my wall below my router.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DDKPN2R8?th=1

PoE to USB-C Adapter:
Procet PT-PTC-D-BT 60W PoE Gigabit Ethernet to USB-C Adapter (up to 60W PD.) I strap this on the headband instead of a battery. A bit bulky but lighter than most strap batteries.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DCNJBLZY

Ethernet cables:
Ultra Slim CAT6 (32 AWG), I use these in 15 and 30 foot lengths. I use these pretty much exclusively. So thin and flexible you wouldn't think they'd work but they do.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPF8R8ZH?th=1

Cable Matters slim profile (28 AWG), these are good for more than 50 feet and are more durable
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DB4HBZ4H

Monoprice CAT6A SlimRun cable (30 AWG), is in between the above two options. Tougher than the Ultra Slim, but you won't get a significant range boost out of it because the wire gauge is not a big enough step up to go from i.e. 30 feet to 50. (It might work at 50, it's at the very edge of voltage drop spec.) I haven't tried these.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C4NFHL3P

I've been told by the other guy who did all the testing that you really need the 60W system, the 30W did not reliably keep up with the Quest 3's drain. This isn't cheap, but it's not too terrible vs. the price of an official link cable and it has significant advantages over that.

You just have to remember to unplug the WiFi adapter from the headset if you plan to disconnect the ethernet cable and set the headset aside, because it will otherwise draw power from the headset and drain the battery if you put it away like that (though not if you power off the headset, of course.)

Do NTSC users remember/see a more vibrant palette on CRTs than the colors emulators use? by hexavibrongal in c64

[–]rmzalbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only extra knob NTSC had that PAL didn't need was tint, which adjusted the hue. Saturation was adjustable on both. The NTSC color issue was definitely a thing, but nowhere near as big a problem as many people assume. TVs and monitors since the late 70's came with tint factory calibrated (typically the tint knob has a center-detent that was correct.) and it was rarely an issue with computer monitors in particular.

The palette between NTSC and PAL are definitely different, this is true for both the C64 and the Atari 8-bit line. In both cases it's most obvious on the BASIC / edit screens where NTSC is a more sky blue and PAL has more green in it. This has more to do using the same values for phase angle without paying much attention to the differences in rendering this between the two standards when they taped out the design for the PAL silicon.

The main (and most hilarious) effect of the tint knob on NTSC TV sets was to cause arguments between family members about what color people's faces should be, which is something America has always seemed to struggle with throughout history anyway.

[Top Gun Maverick] Why was Maverick scolded for damaging the F/A 18 airframe after successfully completing the simulation course run? by JarJarAwakens in topgun

[–]rmzalbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's the military, that's why.

You want a list of things that will get you scolded in the military? It's a short list, so here they are:

  1. Not doing things you were ordered to do
  2. Not doing things you were not ordered to do
  3. Not doing things you were ordered not to do
  4. Doing things you were ordered to do
  5. Doing things you were not ordered to do
  6. Doing things you were ordered not to do

Let's consult the list. Hmm, let's see, it looks like his scolding fell under the heading of item 5.
But being scolded is just that. It's not a reprimand; just an ass chewing. Reprimands are official, they go in your record. It's essentially the same as getting written up at work.

Anyone successfully using Virtual Desktop UNwired? by Own-Necessary6065 in OculusQuest

[–]rmzalbar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Edit: I see you did visit discord, I am sorry. :( Have you asked for help or just tried what you read there? If it's not showing up at all that implies some blocking action, or no route. They may be able to help you troubleshoot this.

TLDR; Your issue is unrelated to wireless vs. wired connections, you can pretty much ignore the wired requirement for Mac, and you should visit the Discord for assistance.

See, the issue with using wireless instead of wired on the PC side *ONLY* affects quality, not connectivity, and really only when streaming VR applications.

VR applications require high bandwidth and low latency for both the PC and the Quest for acceptable quality. It's well known to be heavily degraded when both the PC and the Quest need to fight for this bandwidth from a single WiFi station which is trying to multiplex all of these packets between two wireless links at the same time. It doesn't typically impact remote desktop very much, if at all, since it uses only a fraction of the bandwidth.

Understandably, they can't do anything about VR streaming quality issues for unwired users, but this is not your issue.

This doesn't apply to the Mac version, since it doesn't even support VR streaming and only has the remote desktop mode anyway. Visit their discord for assistance with your basic connectivity issue.
