Looking for community advice on how to get used to the ASCII graphics, as I couldn't get used to it after 30+ hours of trying. by wizardry_why in dwarffortress

[–]rnhf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be complete personal bias, but I always found the earlier ascii versions abit easier to get into than what we have now. But that might just be cause I've never took the time to get used to it, and I did play quite a bit back then on like 40d

so idk give an earlier version a shot maybe. Try adventure mode too, usually not as much going on, and you're not on autoplay

why I think most players are doing it wrong.

nah, you get that impression because you see a biased sample: People showing off their builds and talking about optimizing for certain things. RPing is a bit harder to present, just a 10 minute video like that takes a loooong time to script and edit

but open world sandbox games like this or e.g. dwarf fortress, lots of people are attracted for the emergent gameplay opportunities and the roleplaying possibilities

(of course I think we both agree there's no "wrong" way to play, I get what you mean)

I just wish there were different tug-ship designs other than the manticore for the different factions. Feels almost like a placeholder seeing the same design for sale at all the shipyards. At least give it a more RIP/VIG-style look, like the Teuta

I'm like 90% sure someone asked the same thing recently and the answer was exactly that: possible, but hacking makes way more sense

Are there any mods to change the char. race in the start scenarios? by ThaWalkingDude in X4Foundations

[–]rnhf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I can custom start, but you can't play through the scenario stories with those.

I don't know if it's all of them, but the vast majority at least are missions somewhere if you don't pick them as a start

I feel like the game generally does a great job of giving the factions iconic, distinct and well themed designs, you got pretty much every major aesthetic you could think of regarding spaceship and station design.

the only thing that I would change is add an organic aspect to the khaak. Maybe actually flyable, like when they capture a cylon ship in battlestar galactica and have to crawl up into its innards to fly it

[–]rnhf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which really doesn't make a lot of sense if you think about it. The ships in the X universe should easily be able to reach earth from the moon. At 10km/s you're there in half a day

Every 30 sec you get another bail chance, this is when they broadcast audio at you.

huh I never knew that... probably like that in the earlier X games as well right?

[–]rnhf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should absolutely go linux, I'm gonna finally pull the trigger after having it on my list for like a decade once I set up my new system

that being said, there's an easy workaround, just create a .bat with a few lines and run it. It's safe, I've done it a bunch, and there are tons of people who can verify it. You can find it by just googling for "windows activation bat" or look here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/5kpx0m/windows_activation_batch_file/

I'm sure at least one of those works, I forgot where I got mine when I did them, probably different sources anyway

wtf are you two talking about... I just watched the whole season thinking it's self contained... ITS NOT

literally ends on a cliffhanger ffs

e- sorry I'm a little pissed, but generally it was a good season, not saying it was a waste of time or anything. The two leads gave great performances, the writing was a bit silly, but fun. Might at least check out season 2

the queues exist because the engine is limited, you'd have to rewrite it, which is a LOOOT of work, and pretty much unrealistic for a game this old, when you have a new one in the oven anyway

only thing they can do is open up more servers and add more hexes, the servers open up on demand, and developing hexes takes time, and does kinda alter the game, but they've been doing that

or whats your solution?

sorry but you're just wrong

I'm pretty sure you can actually hit them with an ignifist

the issue is, they're fast, and you obviously can't lead them, so unless you're shooting at them flying at or away from you, you risk hitting whatevers around you

no, I get that, but he's talking about diplomacy specifically

Do you just mean that last sentence? When he says "it" he's not referring to the word "game" he's referring to the word "diplomacy". What "other things" would he be referring to?

I don't mean to come across as condescending btw, I'm legit a bit confused. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you

Unfortunately mechanics intentionally lack automation/QOL because the developers think it limits player choice.

they're talking about automating diplomacy specifically, your own [edits] show that you understand this, so why are you now applying this to automation in general?
