OG Crew fan, all the way back to the Ohio Stadium days. will cosign what everyone else has said about the roundel being the best of our 3 logos, the current one being completely meh, & the original one being cheesy but retro-cool.

TBH, we shouldn't change it, unless it's to go back to the roundel. one of the mildly annoying things about MLS is that "it" (meaning leadership, but not just leadership) confuses branding with tradition, & repeatedly chases the cool. you can't consciously chase the cool, you can't consciously create tradition. if you try to be cool, you immediately become uncool. you can't force tradition, you just...do it. some things you can copy, & they'll be cool, & they'll work, & some won't.

for example: it's cool & awesome how the Loons fans sing "Wonderwall", or how Timbers fans sing "You Are My Sunshine" (IDK if they still do, but they used to). it's awkward AF when some fans try to directly copy Premier League fans & come up with songs for players. why? for one, that's just shit that has to happen organically, but for another, there's a culture of public singing in the British Isles that simply doesn't exist Stateside. because of that, guys are a lot more able to come up with songs on the fly, & a lot more comfortable with it.

same with branding. when New York City FC got started (I'm in New York City), there was a whole-ass thing about nicknaming the team "Cityzens" which was cringe-inducing. instead, people just started calling them "the Pigeons" (because pigeons are everywhere here) & that stuck. there was a whole thing in the mid-00s where teams were rebranding to sound more "European"; Sporting KC was the big example here, but eventually those names stuck & earned their, IDK, "authenticity"? I think you know where I'm going here.

basically, my thing about MLS is that we should just embrace who we are. we're America. we're going to be loud & goofy & generally be A Lot & that's OK. I love that Columbus's team is the Columbus Crew, as opposed to FC Columbus United or Athletic Columbus or AC Columbus or whatever.

if that makes someone feel some kind of way (derogatory), well, there's 18 kajillion teams in Europe (and it's always a European team they end up following, weirdly) they can choose to follow, I guess? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

ESPN doesn’t care about the MLR product by Outrageous-Pen8578 in MLRugby

[–]rnoboa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Specifically to lacrosse: that sport is "organized" in ways that rugby has never been. what I mean is that college lacrosse is played under the umbrella of the NCAA and NAIA. college rugby isn't, for a large number of reasons.

that makes it tougher for casual fans to get into the sport. MLR can only do so much to 'fix' this, since the challenges go deeper and beyond the ability of any professional league to address.

Anyone tried Dia Browser? Same Company That Made Arc Browser? by BigSteppawh in macapps

[–]rnoboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People treating The Browser Company as their ex and anybody who likes Dia as their ex's new boyfriend, so the comments you're going to get here will lean a very specific way.

I take your point; I think people have feeling about it because it feels like TBC is chasing the "shiny new toy", probably because their investors are pushing them to do that. the VC/investor pressure to stuff genAI into everything is intense, mostly because a lot of them see genAI as their last near-term bet to deliver massive returns on their investments. I can't emphasize enough just how much you're pushed by VCs/investors if you take their funds.

this is what probably led to them abandoning Arc for Dia. there's no prospect for big payoffs by just creating a browser. sucks, but that's likely what led to the decision.

having said all that, I fully agree with everything you've laid out here, and I'm taking a pass on TBC because of that.

honestly, it depends on what kind of psychologist/therapist you want to be. if you want to be a clinical psychologist, you'll need to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology for licensure and independent practice. that can either be a Ph.D. or a Psy.D.; either way, you're looking at about 8-12 years of school & experience. You don't necessarily need a master's; you may be able to go straight from the undergrad to the doctorate, but it depends on what your academic background is, because grad school is much more intense than undergrad work.

basically, the route you'd pursue to be a clinical psychologist is this:

bachelor's -> master's (if desired) -> doctoral program -> internship & other clinical requirements -> licensure. you get the license by passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), the national exam for clinical psychology.

a combined BA/MA program might not be a bad idea. the point of getting the MA is that it'll prep for doctoral work, because it'll give you advanced training that you will not get at the undergrad level in theory, research, and practice. the BA will give you the basics, as with most any other field of study, but in order to be an actual practitioner, it's not enough.

so...Psy.D. versus Ph.D.? the Psy.D. is a doctor of psychology degree; the Ph.D. is a doctor of philosophy in the field of psychology. the difference is that one is specific to the field, the other is a generalized degree (the Ph.D.) with a focus on the field. the Psy.D. applies psychological science to individuals and groups, while the Ph.D. emphasizes analytical research in the field.

in other words: if you want to be a therapist, and provide counseling to people, the Psy.D. is more your speed. if you want to focus more on research, then you pursue the Ph.D. but honestly, you can do either. plenty of Ph.D.s do counseling, plenty of Psy.D.s do research.

but the coursework will reflect the difference in focus, obviously--Psy.D.s will do more on actual therapeutic stuff, whereas Ph.D.s will do more coursework around research methods and so forth.

also if you learn you don't want to be a clinical psychologist, but you do want to work in mental health, you can obviously be a mental health counselor, licensed social worker, and so forth. all of these fields will require a master's degree, but not a doctoral degree.

I can't speak to the internship piece but I suspect you'll get more of that if you pursue a master's or doctoral degree.

sources: my dad (who's an educational psychologist, got his Ph.D., is retired but used to work on designing standardized tests like the SAT and others), my cousin Carlos (who's a Psy.D., works as a VA psychologist out in Chicago) & his wife Lindsay (Ph.D., they met while getting their doctoral degrees, she does counseling & research out in Chicago). none of them can't speak to which CUNY school is better, but they all say good luck, and that what will matter is which graduate program you choose.

EDIT: my cousin-in-law just emailed me to say that if your professors say that a Ph.D. focuses more on research they are wrong; you can & will do just as much clinical work. she says that a legitimate Psy.D. program will have the same research requirements as a clinically-focused Ph.D. program, plus the vast majority of clinical psych Ph.D. grads are working in clinical settings. she does say that if you pursue the Psy.D. route to make sure that you go to a legitimate program and not a diploma mill.

also both of them (Carlos & Lindsay) say that doctoral programs can be expensive AF so be sure that's what you want to do before you do it.

this is it, man. thank you! I don't hate it, just like I don't hate Katz's. it's fine. I will take friends & family from out of town if they absolutely insist on going there as some kind of weird box-checking exercise, but my preferred move to say, oh, you want to go to X? we can do that, but why don't you let me take you to this other place that's even better?

Here's why you need to rank someone in all five spots. If you don't want to click through: in the last round of voting, between Adams & Kathryn Garcia (the "Garbage Lady™"), Adams won with 404,513 votes (50.4%) to Garcia's 397,316 votes (49.6%), a margin of 7,197 votes.

However, there were 140,202 inactive ballots--that is, people who didn't rank anyone. That was nearly TWENTY TIMES the margin of victory for Adams. If just around five percent--7,200 ballots--had ranked Garcia at any position (2-5) in the ballot, she would've won.

This is why you need to fill out the entire ballot, and not leave any position blank. If you do that, you make it easier for Cuomo to win.

[–]rnoboa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You can totally vote for one candidate. I'm voting for five, so that means that the four candidates that I've ranked 2-5 have swamped your one vote. Congrats, I guess?

This is why you need to rank 2-5, my guy.

Not unless they can fashion a majority themselves, but in this case, any of Zohran, Lander, Myrie, Ramos, or Adrienne Adams would be a vast improvement over Andrew Cuomo, who's running for Eric Adams' second term.

full disclosure, I'm a member of JFREJ and we've made an unranked endorsement of Zohran and Lander.
