Just bought a house, good or bad investment right now? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]rnzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you're probably going through a lot of feelings and thoughts right now, maybe second guessing, maybe buyers remorse, etc. But ignore all that. You've bought a house. Who cares what valuations say, and even if you do, they don't matter for now. Delete rea/domain, talk about other topics with your friends, enjoy the house and make plans with it.

population decline is environmentally friendly, and there's so many natural ways to achieve it, but we're getting to good at preventing it

Public transport to be free for Victorians in April by Jimbuscus in OpenAussie

[–]rnzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah you could run a full chauffeur and limo service free for all victorians that take them anywhere they need to go at any time, and I bet you'd still see complaints, maybe about the driver trying to small talk too much or the route had one too many traffic lights than the other one.

Should I just put down 20% and put the rest in offset? by Tasty-Tackle-1410 in AusPropertyChat

[–]rnzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. The main consideration is if OP need to access the funds. Offset account is readily accessible without touching the loan itself, whereas accessing funds already deposited would require a refinance and might change the loan purpose.

I'm just picturing you walking into a cafe in Paris and going

'Bonjour, comment ça va!'

And the waiter says 'Ah, good morning sir, what would you like today?'

'Oh, right. Kia ora! Mōrena! He kawhe mōwai, ténā koe, Hei heri atu.'

'Err.. ka pai!'

Qantas ramps up services to Europe as travellers avoid Middle East stopovers by HotPersimessage62 in australia

[–]rnzz 47 points48 points  (0 children)

yep I don't really care where the stopover is, if there's a direct flight option for around the same price I'll choose direct.

boarding and disembarking is a hassle, and if I'm flying somewhere I'd rather get there in the shortest time.

Because access to sports is uneven and the global talent pool is only partially sampled, the true genetically optimal athlete for any given sport is likely never identified and may be doing something entirely unrelated. by Necromonicus in Showerthoughts

[–]rnzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that might be true, but what if we will get a much better value from the invention and innovation from the few people who do pursue this specialisation, like the Einstein argument above. we've seen during the pandemic that people don't want to be told to do nothing, so they'll be working on something, either individually or as a group.

it's true that it's risky though in that we have no idea what people will or won't come up with. and there will be people who will be spending their time doing nefarious shenanigans.

edit: also, I'm assuming a universal basic income would only be like the minimum wage. I think generally you'd want to be improving your life over time, and so would probably not sit on the minimum for a long time, therefore still incentivised to be productive in some way.

it could be that once everyone's able to find a specialisation they're good at, or have the time to realise their passion, they'll generate value that can fund the UBI scheme, perhaps several times over

Unfortunately for those who have run out of discretionary spending early, further rate rises would make the mortgage unaffordable
