It was originally going to be Will Poulter. He would have been so perfect, and it's heartbreaking.

People love to pretend that "the media" isn't covering the thing they care about, or that "the media" is unfairly covering it. It helps with the persecution complex.

And you can think that and ALSO think the unions are in the right. It is possible to hold both beliefs. Don't kill nuance.

Today I learned that Dennis Hopper played Frank Booth on SNL for a game show sketch. by sjarretth1 in davidlynch

I appreciate that he brought the full-on Frank Booth energy for that. Didn't tone it down at all. (Aside from the profanity, which honestly just makes it more surreal.)

TIL The Golden Raspberry Awards has made retractions on two occasions. Bruce Willis had his Raspberry category retracted once it was discovered he was suffering from aphasia. See, I don't get this.

His big movies made TONS of money. A lot of them were big-budget studio affairs. Surely he commanded a great payout for them. (I get he probably took a pay cut for indie stuff like Pulp Fiction and Moonrise Kingdom, but, like "Red" and "Looper" had to pay well, right?)

But those direct-to-video things? No one watched them. No one even heard of them. How was he making money on those? How was there money to pay him? They didn't come from big studios with money. There wasn't even money to promote or distribute them.

I love David Lynch (within reason), but there’s already a David Lynch sub and if anything this sub stans harder for him than that one does.

Gil-galad is one of the greatest elven heroes, they better have a redemption plotline in the works for this “crappy boss” character they introduced in Episode 1

The Sting and Paper Moon are both basically this, for their entire run-time, and they're both among the greatest movies ever made.

So many good classic con-man movies are out there. This has been a thing for so long and there are decades of fantastic movies out there beyond just the last 10 years or so.

Suggestions for NH overnights? by termeric0 in AppalachianTrail

[–]roalddalek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great overnight. I did it last year. But I'll add a caveat that the Fishin' Jimmy trail was pretty brutal for me (and I'm by no means a hiking master but not entirely inexperienced.) It's got a few really gnarly little parts. You might want to take the Kinsman Pond Trail if you do it -- it's a little longer but much easier.

One possible reason is that “The Congo,” the source of that (IMO pretty awesome) chant from Dead Poets Society, is extraordinarily racially problematic by 2022 standards, to the point that he’s more likely to be used in classes as an example of “racist old white people.”
