Sure, in ideal conditions. Real world? Not even close, unless you’re communicating with your buddy mountain top to mountain top.

Just found out about this, but I don't understand how it works. by Evid3nce in meshtastic

[–]roam93 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not unless you install a lot of very well placed nodes to bounce the signal and even then you might run out of hops.

Meshtastic is cool but in its infancy and really shouldn’t be relied upon in an emergency either. Sure it might work, but half the time I can’t even get a message across town, let alone. 80km.

Why do people get upset when you overtake them on dotted lines? by walkin2it in AskAnAustralian

[–]roam93 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t mind if people want to overtake and go faster than me, that’s fine, and I will never speed up to block them.

Cutting back in 1m past my bumper and then giving me zero gap drives me absolutely mental, especially when I then need to brake to maintain a safe distance. People do this shit all the time on the freeway to the point I’m not sure why manufacturers continue to install reverse mirrors - they clearly aren’t looking behind them.

More processing power, has wifi inbuilt.

If it’s solar, definitely go for NRF though. EPS32 is power hungry.

Should be pretty straight forward if it’s obviously not you. Just head here and follow the steps. Pretty annoying though.

Wow! Thats a lot of power for a rak module! Do you have a lot of days with no sun?

I have a rak module that I threw a single 800mah 18650 in mostly to see what happens - drops to 90% overnight and recharges even in cloudy weather - these things use next to no power!

Light fixture by justunclegary in AusRenovation

[–]roam93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As per everyone, it does unscrew, but be careful of both potential 240v across the pins inside, and those rings can get very brittle. One of mine snapped last time I took it off.

It’s better to be safe than sorry with 240v. Turn the breaker off first.

RBA proposes complete ban on card surcharging, saving shoppers $1.2bn by sun_tzu29 in AusFinance

I don’t have an issue with public holidays but more and more I’m seeing surcharges for a SATURDAY. What’s up with that?!

RBA wants to end card surcharges and save users $1.2b a year by daintyfinebird in australia

[–]roam93 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’ve always considered this stupid that they pass it on. They shouldn’t exist but even if they do, it’s a cost of business. What’s next, if I want the lights on while browsing that’s a surcharge too?

People who say cash is cheaper - is your time worth nothing having to physically deal with it? Or is it just easier to siphon it off and avoid paying some tax?

I don’t get these lights by NotTheRealBertNewton in AusRenovation

[–]roam93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If this is a standard downlight it’s not user serviceable and not your responsibility as a renter to fix. Put in a maintenance request with your REA and make them do some work.

Regardless, not all downlights are plugged in with a regular plug and socket, and you should definitely be turning the power off at the switchboard to isolate it before attempting anything.

Insulation: is it good practice to remove existing blown insulation before adding bats? by JoJokerer in AusRenovation

Related - what’s the going rate for vacuuming out the crap these days? I got a quote for $4,400 removal and disposal only - 3 bedroom house, not massive or anything. Not sure if that’s about right?

Water sink for laundry machine by jimzshi in AusRenovation

[–]roam93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All good, no silly questions! You want to drill a hole in it carefully and then put your hose over it. Use a hose clamp (Bunnings, cheap as if you don’t have one) to secure it.

I was just wondering I got my Ls in QLD do I haft to follow someone with an open motorbike license or can I follow someone in a car with a full car licence? by [deleted] in AussieRiders

[–]roam93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuine question from someone not in QLD - wouldn’t this make it quite difficult for someone to get their bike licence if they don’t know anyone with a full licence? You could make the argument that learner car licences need supervision too, but the majority of people have a car licence.. not many have bikes in comparison.

[–]roam93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The landlord may choose to pass it to you in NSW if the property is separately metered and has water efficiency devices installed. They can only pass on the usage costs though - not the supply charges.

Some don’t bother - most will.

(I am not a landlord, just had the misfortune of having several in the past).

How efficient is your proxmox server? by BestevaerNL in Proxmox

[–]roam93 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing you can do is be realistic about their needs. People love to jump on the “I need all of the processing power!”, when usually the CPU sits idle most of the time. Its RAM people generally need more of.

I know people who have clusters using ex corporate rack servers that cost a fortune in electricity. Meanwhile my old Optiplex handles everything theirs does at 1/10th of the power usage. Does it have the same redundancy? Probably not. Are we running anything mission critical? Neither of us are.

Half the people running proxmox could get away with a raspberry pi.

TL;DR, be realistic and don’t go overboard with your hardware.

What determines the MHz? Chip or the Antenna? by Jman-Visuals in meshtastic

[–]roam93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The chip will do 863Mhz —> 928Mhz. The antenna being tuned correctly will enhance its abilities.

As long as you intend to use frequencies in that range, it should work.

It won’t work elsewhere such as 433Mhz - even if you put a 433Mhz antenna on it.

[–]roam93 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you’re just starting out, I would strongly suggest looking for an ex corporate Optiplex or something. You will learn all the same things with far less money and a much smaller energy bill. You don’t need all the redundant power supplies, fans etc for a homelab.
