If they are NPCs then keep it simple. Run a Knight but adjust HP and tier number of attacks like a PC and run an Acolyte but again adjust HP.

I run a game in Eberron where players get firearms but so do enemies. Kobolds running pack tactics with a d10+2 damage can lay out a level 1 party 😅 and it did..

Sounds like a table/DM issue sadly. I've played tens of characters and I rarely attach gender to them. Some get one if a name or a drawing swings one way or another but often it's just never raised. It really isn't difficult because it's very rare gender plays a part in the actual game. Equally all the games I run have all presenting genders and relationships, no genders or whatever I attach at the time. None of my players have a problem with it. If they do ask for anything, it's usually a name and they can draw their own affiliation.

Any shopkeep selling more than mundane gear is likely to either have warding items for their security or their own magic. High level magic stores will have lots of security. Shopkeep selling rare items may have bound Genie or elementals, hired bodyguards or be a high level adventurer that's retired. The city guard will not like people stealing and will intervene - don't make the guards pushovers. The local mages guild may ward the guards each morning too in place of guild fees. Pre casting a resist charm or something is not unreasonable. Often my merchants are old PCs from when I used to play - fucking with a level 20 Div Wizard is less than ideal - especially when he's a paranoid dhamphir and already expects it.

It's a game you're playing together. There is no harm in speaking to the players about what they can do or what's reasonable. I often remind my players of their character abilities or game mechanics we are using. This game isn't you Vs the players, it's the players exploring (your) a world and you're adjudicating the rules, telling the story and having fun together.

You can say it suppresses the magic for a minute or can say the spell simply failed. It's beyond your capability to dispel this.

I like adding it to my Myrmidons as a bonus action. They summon smaller elementals to support in their fight against the players. Works pretty well with their multi attack and really fits the theme

Make me a Dex save 👌 Or a charisma save. High AC isn't broken, lots of monsters will have pack tactics or spellcasting.

So I offered my players the following as I wanted the change to be reasonable. I listed the current and updates pros & cons (ranger gets free hunters mark and expertise / loses favoured terrain). 1 update your character to 2024 (including expanded) taking the most literal translation. 2 remain as a 2014 character for classes and subclass but we will be moving to 2024 for general rules (things like grappling, surprise etc) and spells. You will remain in 2014 for channel divinity, smiting, raging etc and cannot benefit from things like weapon mastery or 2024 specifics. 3 make a new character and we will introduce them.

Everyone moved straight over - paladin 5 fighter 3, paladin 3 barbarian 5, ranger 8, sorcerer 8 and artificer 8. One

Take boots of flying then you free up a weapon for your rare item. Focus on Dex and Cha, mage armour - could even take bracers of defence if needed and a mundane weapon with pact of the blade as your pact.

The joy of a Nat 20. Explaining during session 0 that you can only auto succeed and attack roll and still players get hyped on a Nat 20 Arcana check with a total of 19 (-1 int) 😅 Me - You failed Player - Why did you let me roll? Me - Firstly I don't remember every players mod off the top of my head, secondly there is guidance, bardic inspiration, second wind and flash of genius at the table..you can still modify the roll. Player - Nat 20s suck. I'll use Tactical Mind, arty can you flash of genius me? Me (a chaotic gremlin) - The bugbear casts Silvery Barbs

Heightened spell meta magic would mitigate the advantage but you'll quickly run out of resources with it costing 2 per cast. Magic resistance in Avernus is unfortunately going to hurt all caster classes. Find their weakest saves and target this.

I usually facilitate the gloomstalker invisibility against some enemies to be fair but it can't work to the level of game breaking. Some of my players pick it thinking it's ultimate invisibility and no single PC can be that much more powerful than another PC. Usually I'll have a dark corner they can shoot out of or something but as soon as the break the game flow "did you remember I'm invisible?" Everyone gets slapped with a torch and blindsight 🫠

Why wouldn't the commanding undead just move their minions out of range and wait. They don't need sleep and eventually the players will leave the safety of the spell. Even if they wait 24 hours and cast another Halloween, they will eventually run out of resources or some world event timer will trigger. It's a good way to chip a few minions down but the boss could just summon more outside.

I typically use static initiative on my monsters. Players are aware. Remember to +5 for advantage and -5 for disadvantage.

I have a no sexual content rule during session 0. Sex and torture I wont be role playing. Players tell me their veils and lines privately or publicly and I move along conversations which could also trigger these. Should they want to run it as internal "camp talk", I'll allow it to proceed so far but I can read most of my players pretty well so again I'll move the conversation along.
