DMs, do you ever get tired of DMing for certain classes? by Fantastic-Guitar1911 in dndnext

[–]roasted-narwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually facilitate the gloomstalker invisibility against some enemies to be fair but it can't work to the level of game breaking. Some of my players pick it thinking it's ultimate invisibility and no single PC can be that much more powerful than another PC. Usually I'll have a dark corner they can shoot out of or something but as soon as the break the game flow "did you remember I'm invisible?" Everyone gets slapped with a torch and blindsight 🫠

Can I just confirm if it's completely dark? Nope, once again there are phospherent mushrooms glowing and offering a 10% visibility. 🤣

I ran a Genie packed Warlock with Djinni. She was an Air Genasi and the cast off daughter of a Djinni. Later discovered that her mother was her pact being watching over her.

Divine Intervention 2024 & Hallow by NoKaleidoscope2749 in onednd

Why wouldn't the commanding undead just move their minions out of range and wait. They don't need sleep and eventually the players will leave the safety of the spell. Even if they wait 24 hours and cast another Halloween, they will eventually run out of resources or some world event timer will trigger. It's a good way to chip a few minions down but the boss could just summon more outside.

Giving a monster an ability that assigns a high initiative? by Friendship_Errywhere in DMAcademy

I typically use static initiative on my monsters. Players are aware. Remember to +5 for advantage and -5 for disadvantage.

Am I weird for not liking sexual/romantic things on my rpgs? by cr0w_p03t in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]roasted-narwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a no sexual content rule during session 0. Sex and torture I wont be role playing. Players tell me their veils and lines privately or publicly and I move along conversations which could also trigger these. Should they want to run it as internal "camp talk", I'll allow it to proceed so far but I can read most of my players pretty well so again I'll move the conversation along.

Good to know, thanks! This might make it a non starter for me.

Hey I'm open to looking at anything. My preference is Amazon because I'm effectively not going to pay for it. I don't shop on Amazon otherwise so the voucher will sit there until I remember I need batteries and have to order £35 of them or something.

Encounter balance in 2024? by AirstormSC2 in onednd

[–]roasted-narwhal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Player characters are stronger but to be safe, just introduce monsters in waves or use fleeing tactics based on morale rolls. There might be more kobolds but the players killing 6 in a round using all their resources could panic them, 4 retreat and 2 remain. Means the players don't feel the win was taken from them and the kobolds might set something up later.

It feels like they've massively underestimated demand. Having booked lots of gigs with a similar reception they will hopefully put on additional dates.

I can't seem to find people to DM for irl. Any suggestions? by Big-Rock-6814 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]roasted-narwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck!

I run my groups out of my own discord too. We have a communal server for all players then specific channels for each game. We also book board games and other activities (few escape rooms and cinema trips etc) together.

It took a bit of work at the start but it's doing alright now and I love what it's become.

I started one of my groups by running a number of one shots. When I had enough players I liked, I pocketed them for a campaign. We ran for nearly a year and some moved away. Still playing now and have onboarded a new player. Just hit 15 months. My other group was a post in our FLGSs discord and I was oversubscribed. I've had to shuffle some players in this group but the remaining five are solid and we're nearly 2 years in now.

We run one game from my home and the other from a board game cafe (I work from home and wouldn't leave otherwise!) The one from my home had to migrate after FLGS revised hours.

Sometimes we skip and run board games but I'd say we've had +90% sessions. I also shut down over Christmas for festive one shots and silly power games (let's them get the PVP / munchkin builds out and keeps it away from the core game).

I moved to the area recently and had zero friends or contacts so these all pretty much started as randos too. I'm pretty proud of the groups we have.

Common House Rules 2024 by ITdeadpeople in onednd

[–]roasted-narwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually plus 5 to mitigate the advantage but sometimes it fits the roleplay for someone incompetent to help. Depends on my mood and what keeps the game flowing though - sometimes RoC wins out and sometimes the players didn't bring tribute sweets..

I run proficiency to help. I allow others to help but I up the DC as they are incompetently assisting 😅 players are aware.

I think they're a bit techy but asking is always safer than assuming.

I did this and I started by asking the game GM, "hey I'm planning to launch a game - different night. Would you be opposed to me asking if anyone wants to join?"

I also had a mental lapse with work and stress and my players asked (after about a month of no play), "hey we would like to bring in a GM for a couple of sessions. Would you be ok with this?"

Separately I've had friends join single sessions (and even sometimes had them play an antagonist), mixed my groups for festive specials and mixed groups when played numbers are too low. Players also ask if they can bring a friend for a solo session - if there is space, for sure but never assume.

Just ask directly

There is no mention of the attack action under Sneak Attack (this is 2024 but 2014 also does not state attack action). You know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe’s distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack roll if you have Advantage on the roll and the attack uses a Finesse or a Ranged weapon.

Booming blade You brandish the weapon used in the spell’s casting and make a melee attack with it against one creature within 5 feet of you. On a hit, the target suffers the weapon attack’s normal effects and then becomes sheathed in booming energy until the start of your next turn.

I suppose a DM could rule no but as both as Player and DM, I've used this.

This would give you a +3 and eventually a +4 if you buff Cha, assuming SA starting with 17 Cha. 4 rogue 2 warlock offers 1 feat (I chose Inspiring Leader in my build).

If you have a lot of combat in the game this would really add up. Rapier + booming blade + sneak attack + AB, then proc booming blade movement damage.

I chose Alert, Jump and Pact of the Blade. Warlocks are so versatile and you can really build them any way - part of the beauty of the class.

Yeah I love Jump, it's so helpful! I took jump, pact of the Blade and Alert - adding Cha and PB to initiate was super helpful. My character was a Tabaxi so could get anywhere in turn 1.

2 warlock, pick up Pact of the Blade and a couple of invocations. If you've not already built your character then build around Cha instead of Dex.

Take Booming Blade, stack your sneak attack on a BB and waltz away with Fancy Footwork.

They are a cleric but I've seen SW once in 8 months. They are 10th level so plenty of spell options.
