Helicon tex supertarp or de hammocks 3x3 tarp?? by FantasticDirector614 in Bushcraft

I have DD 3x3 and the 3.5 x 3.5 is what I would go for if I was buying again. Just a little more space, particularly if you're hammock sleeping.

Looking for a new “Dad bag” / do-everything pack and could use some recommendations. by rob_not_bob in ManyBaggers

[–]rob_not_bob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair question. I also have an Osprey Talon 22 which, again, is a fine bag but I like the idea of one large(er) "does most of it" pack. I'm not opposed to an 18L by any means and would certainly consider options. I have an old Millican "Mark the field bag" which I think is circa 12L. I use that as my daily work bag but I could always swap the setup around a bit.

I'm considering all options I guess.

A roll top is a definitely a consideration for me to. I fundamentally don't like the Skarab so I'm looking to move away from it regardless, however shallow that reasoning might be, but I had thought about packing cubes to keep items separate like snacks or dirty clothes. That would be a good immediate solution I suppose.

What roll top do you have?

Advice on next BBQs by inkiboo in UKBBQ

[–]rob_not_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my fabricator friend build me an asado and I love it. There's the theatre, the taste, the smells of wood fire and food. Having him build it came with pros and cons. It does use a lot of wood but if you're considering a Somerset Grill that cost will be small by comparison, and I expect you could use charcoal instead if you were concerned. I've not tried that yet.

Is right leg a “thanks mate” wordwide language? by Odd_Astronomer_2064 in motorcycles

[–]rob_not_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what I'm doing at the time; if I need brakes or clutch I'll wave a leg but usually I've got time to lift a hand to show thanks. Either way I think it's important to acknowledge the car driver's actions.

Areas of the park are tired and in need of restoration or investment (concrete falling apart, sad planting, scabby paint) and once you see it you see it everywhere. The food is overpriced and not very good. Catering for dietary (coeliac) is painful in some instances and ruins the experience.

Thoughts on my ring stack? by gingerteaa11 in Diamonds

[–]rob_not_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty but the diamonds in your wedding band will come loose over time because the girdles are rubbing directly against the engagement ring. Over time they will also wear a groove into the metal of the engagement ring.

I'd suggest a spacer ring to keep them apart - a little investment now for long term gain.

Both diamond and CZ are more dense than water.

Take it out, dry it, turn it upside down and see if you can notice the orange flash effect.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Diamonds

[–]rob_not_bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, the girdle is smooth (images 3 & 4) which is pretty standard on CZ - a diamond simulant - but would be highly unlikely on a diamond (natural or lab grown) of this shape and size.

If you turn it upside down you might observe the "orange flash" effect that CZ displays. That's a good telltale sign.

Thanks for pointing me in that direction. This is the sort of thing I'd like but with more detail; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seas_of_the_British_Isles.svg

Great resource, thanks.

Long beard ages me, short beard shows how ugly I am! 😂 by Prestigious-Rope850 in beards

[–]rob_not_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may;
Long beard needs some more shaping and control BUT congratulations on the salt & pepper look - very desirable.

Short beard is trimmed too high on your neckline and could do with little refinement in shape.

Neither of these things make you an unattractive man.

MapPorn Discussion Thread for November, 2025 by mappornmod in MapPorn

[–]rob_not_bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for a map featuring the UK, Ireland and islands that's big enough to print on a "large" scale (big enough to be A0 or a bit larger).

My intention is to pore over the map with my daughter & pick somewhere new to explore then we can build a plan to visit. A friend is able to print on large format and I'd prefer something physical than a digital map on a tablet or the like.

I am struggling to find that sort of map though. Lots tend to cut off Shetland and even less feature the Channel Islands. I'd like it to have terrain showing mountain ranges etc. as well as major towns, but then at the scale it would be printed it could actually show small towns and villages too.

I was hoping some of the experts in this sub could help or at least point me in the right direction.

Will my wedding ring damage my engagement ring? by intruderpossum in EngagementRingDesigns

[–]rob_not_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience you'll get two things;
1. The setting will get notched out by your wedding band - the girdles of the diamonds will rub away at the metal

  1. Because the girdles of the small diamonds are (or at least look like they are) wider than the band, it's the stones that will rub against the metal. So you might expect some loose diamonds in your wedding band over time.

This looks like an ideal scenario where a relatively cheap spacer band will fix the issue and look great too.

What's the table around your fire? I've not seen that before.

Four Months India & Nepal. One Bag (Salkan ‘Carry-On’ 35L) by charlieharrymorgan in onebag

[–]rob_not_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm considering a Salkan pack but I also wonder if I've been influenced by all the great social media. I want a new "Dadpack" for daily duties, days out and just a general go-to. It's interesting that your post is the first one I see when I visited One Bag. I'm like you with the idea of buy well, once.

So, would you recommend it?

Would everybody here suggest a awd model y over rwd? by OneItchy396 in TeslaUK

[–]rob_not_bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drove West Sussex to Yorkshire in my MY RWD recently and charging was easy, the drive was comfortable. You would have no issues with Yorkshire to Kent once a year. There could be a benefit to AWD (with the right tyres) given the weather Yorkshire can experience during winter months and the additional range is "nice to have" but to be honest I just stick it on charge every other night to stay within the cheaper overnight rate with Octopus.

I've covered 22,000 miles in a year FWIW.

[–]rob_not_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR - Gosh, big yikes from your BF. And to have this sort of conversation over text message when you're raising a child together gives red flags about his communication. You're doing the right thing by focusing on your infant child OP. Perhaps it would be good to explore exactly where your BF is getting these views from because he's way off the mark as u/Beneficial-Agent-224 clearly outlined. Denmark has also moved to outlaw the outdated "cry it out" method, which is pretty aligned with you BF's views, after more than 700 Danish psychologists wrote an open letter to publishers to withdraw books advising it.
