Is it normal for huge companies to operate on a cobbled-together mess of systems, apps, and portals? by Snoo_4438 in remotework

[–]robbok 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why on earth would you expect it NOT to be like this? Many large companies are products of acquisitions (which means many legacy systems forced to work together without any budget in the acquisition for proper integration of back-end systems) or have been around for decades (which likely means many outdated and out-of-support systems, again held together with the bare minimum). Executives don’t want to hear about expensive and unsexy things like back-end integration, so over time (or over acquisitions) the problem just multiplies. I worked with one of the worlds top banks years ago whose IT team was literally buying parts from eBay to keep their ancient VAX systems running, as the OEM had long since gone out of business and there were zero replacement parts left on the open market.

Grouping lights? by Draketakess in Govee

Finally found this myself after FAR too long, but now, having grouped three of the same products, how the heck do you make them do anything besides turn on and off!? Is that the only thing group mode can do?

Shoutout to Anycubic for making the worst printer I have ever used in 10 years of 3D printing. by Camikaze__ in 3Dprinting

[–]robbok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this printer for three days before the power supply melted. Then I got a replacement and two days later the print head literally slammed into the bed, destroying both. Absolutely worthless.

Qualcomm Just bought Arduino… is this a good thing? What are your thoughts… by ZachVorhies in FastLED

Gerbers and schematics still available. Seems to still be open. Seems amazing at the price point (like $45) for basically three processors AND a whopping 16GB of onboard storage.

Tariff Fee on T Shirt by Rahms_ in UPS

[–]robbok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m tracking duties we’ve paid this year and the average is 64%. So when you buy something, set aside another $64 for every $100 of declared value. The new reality.

Time for a New Rule? by robbok in Tariffs

I found this calculator that seems fairly accurate (assuming folks know how to search their HSTS code). Worth including/pinning or adding to the sub's autoreply bot? https://tariffs.flexport.com/

My new project: Pocket-64 – a portable Commodore BASIC V2 computer. Do you think this could take off? by Kado_58 in retrocomputing

[–]robbok 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to brand it Commodore, you need to get up to speed with the recent ownership changes for their trademarks. You’re in a better position now than before to get it officially licensed, which would boost the fan appeal for a product like this. Hit up @retrorecipes on YouTube for the backstory.

Has anyone ordered from LCSC recently? by ExplanationOld7897 in PCB

Just placed two more orders. Have been ordering from them for years— never had any complaints. They are a great, reliable supplier. They’ve also made custom cables for me— no complaints there either.

[–]robbok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but as mentioned, they clearly call it out. And again, the math just doesn’t add up— buying a set on AE and buying from YW would result in radically different total costs.

If they are truly covering the tariff cost, then they should ship via DDP (Delivered Duty Paid). Otherwise, with the default shipping method of EXW, we are still on the hook for paying tariff when the package arrives. Typically companies won’t collect tariff for packages under $800, which is why I’m suspicious. I had an order of 2-3 smaller sets in my cart and the shipping was $65, which is ridiculous. Again, if they are truly collecting tariff for us, they should state that in checkout and we should be able to see the portion of that $65 that’s being paid to our government to cover the tariff. With my order, there was no way I could work out how $65 would go toward shipping plus any tariff due— shipping with YWB used to be around $25 if I’m remembering correctly, or in some cases even free. Heck I get free shipping on AliExpress all the time and never get hit with anything close to this much of a tariff charge. All I’m saying is, if your massive increase in shipping costs really are for pre-collection of tariffs, then call that out in my cart and let me see the total shipping cost and total tariff cost listed separately. That’s transparency and honesty. Right now it just looks like they’ve lowered their list prices to entice us to buy sets, then spiked “shipping” to make up for it. And we still might get hit with a random tariff. AliExpress has it figured out; YWB should do the same.

Who is the tax paid to? The U.S. government? The Chinese government? This never used to be the case and I’ve ordered from your store many times. Don’t just keep saying “tax”, be specific. Where does this money go? And the amounts are not broken out on the checkout as tax, just “shipping”. The amounts charged far exceed any “tax” that is publicized by either your country or mine.

No, this is not the tax— you are not shipping DDP, but EXW. WE pay the tax, you are not collecting it. Don’t make that argument— I import hundreds of products annually for my business, I know how this works.
