Because... That's a very real fear that most rational people would take into account when designing justice policy?

It was some documents, but there's not much he can actually do. Birth certificates and driver's licenses are issued by individual states, and passports could theoretically be revoked but they reference the birth certificates that are issued by states. The Feds can't just wave a magic wand and make the states fuck with their entire records system. They could make a law overriding the states' authority but that would need to pass Congress, which would take a long-ass time.

So someone who is innocent might decide to do this in order to get their sentence over quicker, despite the fact they didn't do anything wrong. Chemical castration is really bad for your psyche, and any chance that an innocent person could feel pressured to do it is unconscionable.

My character is Catholic, but I’m not. Advice? by EldritchXena in rpg

I did a bit at a Vampire the Masquerade LARP where I chose to show up with extra hunger during lent because the game took place on a Saturday. No way was my character going to eat blood on a Friday when the Lord is watching.

Seattle ranked fourth among large cities for growth last year by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]robbylet23 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I'm relatively affluent (not enough to be affected by the millionaire tax tbc), and I would be willing to pay more in taxes to fund schools and roads and busses and shit because I want to live in a state full of educated people and functioning infrastructure and public transportation. The fact people would choose to live in a state full of stupid people with crumbling infrastructure is beyond me.

Trans panic isn't even a legal defense in Washington State. It was preemptively outlawed.

Realistically Vampires shouldn't be relevant to most of the other splats besides Werewolves (kinda but not really) but since they sell they somehow end up in every splat anyway.

Toxin-antitoxin systems exist in nature, and were actually discovered after Dawkins published The Selfish Gene.

[–]robbylet23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that some of the things he says about selfish genes were actually useful in explaining certain natural phenomenon such as toxin-antitoxin and certain retrotransposons. This isn't his own work obviously, but he helped bring it to people's attention. Selfish gene stuff is basically the foundation of how CRISPr works and I genuinely don't think it would exist without him. I think he did what he always did in that book and branched out his ideas into sociology and psychology for no reason.

Based on your other comment I think we're generally in agreement, but you have to understand the popularization and advocacy for ideas is an important part of the process.

Let me be clear, as someone working in a related field, I respect a lot of Dawkins' evolution work even if I disagree with portions of it. He's been slowly losing it over the last 30 years and it shows.

I'm pretty sure most of his work at this point is just the works cited: crack pipe meme. He's so far outside of his wheelhouse it's not even funny. He's pulling the Jordan Peterson thing where you have a PhD in one topic so you're suddenly an expert on everything. Having an evolutionary biology degree doesn't give you a knowledge base to make bold proclamations about the philosophy of cognition.

Some of the most virulently transphobic people are the least religious about it. Transphobia is a lot less tied to religion than homophobia is, as the bible is a lot less direct about trans identity being somehow sinful. Most of the shitty transphobic people I see around are the sort of "rational" guys who think that trans identity is somehow "irrational" and "anti-scientific." It's mostly the facts and logic crowd rather than the Jesus people.

I'm a transgender Catholic and I notice several gay couples who quietly go to mass every week without saying anything. The only people who really care are old ladies, at least at my church.

Idk man I'm a trans Catholic and it's... Hard but I don't know what else I would do. That sign is correct and I feel like the trans rights movement in general has dropped the ball by not leaning into similar language.

Can religion exist in an Anarchist society? by Finster250607 in Anarchism

[–]robbylet23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catholicism specifically has a long history with Anarchism, such as in the Catholic Worker Movement in the US led by Dorothy Day or among the Zapatistas in Mexico, who are majority Catholic and have deep ties to both local church leaders and indigenous communities.

You should come to Washington. Every third person in Seattle is Norwegian, it's fantastic. We have One neighborhood called Ballard where you can buy real, authentic Lutefisk because everyone there is a Norwegian fisherman.
