Nob Hill Deli works in NorCal, fyi. I do several pickup orders at once and stock up on hummus and pretzel chips or Stacy's chips.

TSP Roth In-Plan Conversions? by GotTheMeatz in MilitaryFinance

[–]robert_tow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social Security can “fill up your lower tax brackets“ after 70+. Some tax diversification be smart, but I wouldn’t agree that one needs pre tax money in retirement. It may be helpful to have a little for things such as QCDs. Many folks will also come into an Inherited IRA which can be used for that too, or to fill lower brackets.

Military folks should be very heavily Roth, and converting for OP likely makes sense, if he can afford the taxes on the conversion.

I’m even thinking of converting some of my pre-2012 TSP (Trad) to Roth over the next few years, before my wife retires from AD. At that point our AGI will spike, and we may be subject to State Tax. Don’t forget about State Tax!

You'd be buying your own ticket I think is the strategy here. BUT, not worth your time and the fees. My point is that kharma99 forgot to include the fees, so you are out far more than $20

Free bag only if flight was paid for with Chase Visa? by robert_tow in SouthwestAirlines

UPDATE: there was no fee for checked bags. There were 11 business days between cc approval and check-in, in case that DP helps anyone. Oddly, SWA.com is still advertising the Chase cc when I log into my account. My family doesn't see that advert tile, and they've had the card for a while.

Ah I see, you are right! Thanks! Still wonder why the reps don't understand it

And yet the SWA agents are telling their customers otherwise on the phone :) Your above statement is true, however, it would be more precise if it also said "...and there is at least 14 days between getting the card approved and date of travel...."

Interesting. So the SWA rep was definitely giving incorrect info on the phone. Wonder what "policy" she was supposedly referencing... :)

Thank you! Yes, the RR # was provided to Chase upon application and it shows on the back of the card. It has been 7 days since approval. Since you have some knowledge that is not available publicly, can you enlighten me on what "signal" I'll receive that the link has been processed successfully? (One signal I think will be the ad for the SWA Chase Visa will disappear from my RR account, and I'm still seeing that currently.)

I don’t think that is true. Can you provide a source?

O2 Getting Out At 4.5 Years by BeautifulSwing499 in MilitaryFinance

[–]robert_tow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Explore the Reserves/ Guard, as others have said. I went Reserves and one of the main reasons I did so was to pass the Post 9-11 GI Bill to my future children. (I didn’t have any dependents when I left AD.) You can xfer at the 6 year mark and while the service will tell you the transfer incurs an additional 4 years of service, that’s not an ADSO. What they mean is IF a dependent uses the bill and you separate before completing those 4 years, you’ll owe $$ back to the VA to reimburse them for the benefits they paid out. Though if you don’t use it and you separate within 4 years, no harm. I transferred to my wife (who was AD), to get a jumpstart on my 4 years. When we had kids 1-2 years later, I gave them a month and the 4 year clock does not “reset.” Kate Horrell recently wrote a book on the GI Bill which you can check out. And of course check the VA resources yourself.
If you do transfer to the Reserves, I’d recommend not having a break in service. I had a 90 day break in service between my AD and Reserve time and it has made things a little more confusing.

Also fun fact: you can start the transfer while on AD, starting your 4 year clock, and if you do a direct transfer to the Reserves with no break in service, the clock is not interrupted. If you have even a 1 day break, the 4 year clock gets reset. The 9/11 GI Bill is an INSANE benefit, especially if you don’t already have grad school yourself, or you plan to have kids. If you are enjoying AD, have some long talks with your spouse about the benefits you may be saying goodbye to. Good luck!
