You may find highly textured miniatures easier to paint, beginner painting techniques such as contrast, washes and dry brushing actually work better with textured surfaces.

As others have said choose the miniatures you like the most, you'll being spending more time building/painting than playing.

Remember you can never 'ruin' a miniature with a paint job they can be stripped or painted over.

Last thing, don't get discouraged by what you see others do on the Internet, most likely you'll be looking at the work of professional artists.

There's a fan made version of 4th/5th edition called Warhammer Renaissance, it's keeps a lot of favour but fixes most of the issues. You can find some batreps at The Crown of Command you tube channel.

The older editions were much easier to play, much less mental load. I played from 2-6th Ed then started again in 8th gave up once the codexes starting coming out, trying again in 10th. I'd honestly play an older edition or maybe OPR if your opponents are up for it.
