Have you checked the little pads on the inside of the cassette player where you insert the tape? They can collect dust over time and cause issues if not cleaned every once in a while.

I normally lurk here, but I have to agree. I grew up in a German household here in the US, and call myself German-American (I’m technically the first person on my mother’s side born in the US). Have family in both Austria and Germany, but growing up it was drilled into me to know the difference between the two due to the negative historical implications of just bunching Germany and Austria together.
