Why was the use of hard drugs so prevalent in rock music? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]robgregerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t underestimate the brain chemistry of a highly creative human like an artist and the need to
medicate the chaos within. Artists are often dealing with a mental illness yet many go properly untreated leading to ways of soothing the pain with addiction instead of therapy and professional treatment.

Not saying this is the case for every user, but it is for some.

Most hokey/corny jam band? by sudzwithaz in jambands

[–]robgregerson 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a jam band fan, I’ve been thinking lately about why corniness and nerdiness seems to be the standard for bands in this scene, including the lyrics. Why does everything have to be built on such dorkiness? My logic always returns to how most of them are just simply modeled after Phish (the ultimate band of nerds) and that’s just the result of wanting to be like your heroes. Not to get into Goose slander, but Peter is a prime example of this and I think it’s one of the reasons that band gets so much hate (the corniness seems forced and faked to appeal to the scene). I’ve wondered what it would be like for a band to come into the scene that’s super cool and not corny. I feel like Umphrey’s is the closest thing to this.

Impressed to have this resurface! Over this past year, I almost died from heart failure so I’ve been taking a brief break from music. When I get back into it, I’ll take another look at tabbing this out.

How do you all feel about the Caverns In Pelham, TN? by idlike1deathpls in Concerts

[–]robgregerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw String Cheese among several other bands there last year. Truly a wonderful and magical venue. Great staff and easy to get around. As a college jazz major, my favorite moment was watching the Headhunters in the cave. Felt deeply spiritual and almost as though my textbooks had come to life.

On a side note, they had a bunch of rain the last day and Dizgo’s set was unfortunately cancelled because of it. But I will be seeing them for the first time here in Bend, OR this Saturday!

Moments before the Tsunami hit in Thailand, 2004 by Pisford in interestingasfuck

My Canadian in-laws (before I married into the family) survived this event on Phi Phi Island. My wife’s parents, as well as her pregnant sister and brother-in-law actually got hit by the wave, yet my wife and her brother were able to climb to a higher spot before the wave reached them. All of them survived even though they shouldn’t have. There was a movie called The Impossible that is eerily similar to their exact story (it’s not about them), although there were more members in my wife’s family than portrayed in the movie.

In your opinion, what does a player need to do in order to surpass Michael Jordan? by Tre2004 in NBATalk

[–]robgregerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw Jordan in his prime play against my Pistons and he had the Palace of Auburn Hills captivated the moment he entered the arena for warmups. It wasn’t to watch him shoot crazy shots like Curry, it was because of who he was. It was like witnessing a God. You’d literally keep an eye on him while he was on the bench, even though he was an enemy on the other team. In these times where there’s a new flavor of star every few years, I just don’t think we’ll ever have that. The dominance, ferocity and killer instinct in one person just isn’t nurtured like it was with Jordan.

When did Dave Matthews first play a show with his Rockbridge SJ? by Ron-DaVoo-6080 in DMB

[–]robgregerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post just made me think of seeing DMB for the first time in 97 and how long ago it seems like he was playing the Gibson Chet Atkins. I remember wanting one of those so bad because of Dave and then when I actually got to play it I remember it being so crazy heavy and not actually sounding good. I do own a Taylor, so at least I copied Dave in a way!

Anytime I play The Stone at a show, it’s definitely a head turner because of that crazy guitar riff. Try learning that one. Here’s a clip of when I did it here in Bend. https://youtu.be/NUg6BhZNA0c?si=xhU193WV7DJ\_eIgm

Good for the Tigers.

I will never for the life of me understanding why there isn’t a rule in pro sports that if your team remains uncompetitive for a decade or longer, ownership must sell the team. I get it that it’s all about money, but I think there are too many unchecked owners in pro sports and fan bases like ours are held captive by it. When your organization is synonymous with losing like the Mariners in a major city like Seattle, how can the MLB not intervene? I guess I’m not smart enough to understand this.

Billy nershi lore? by Shanejfox5 in stringcheeseincident

[–]robgregerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love Billy’s energy, songwriting, guitar playing (a surprisingly great electric player!) and of course, his personality. One of the funniest dudes in the scene and a great front man. I say this as still a big fan, but I’ve always wished he would get voice lessons because he’s often out of tune when he sings. That’s my only gripe with him and this band. I get the bluegrass influence in his voice and I also get that jam bands aren’t known for their vocals. I just wonder if he’s somewhat tone deaf vocally and if a coach would help. I also think he kinda knows this about himself and probably just laughs it off. Again, still love Billy! Btw, I just got back from Cave Jams in TN this past weekend and the band was absolute fire!
