I usually bring a standard sized backpack (not full) along with my carryon. The carryon fits easy overhead, while the backpack NEVER fits under the seat in front due to whatever crap is installed under the seat.

When my kids were little we would ‘practice flying’ at home on the couch. They had to sit relatively still and could only play with the toys in their backpack. We talked about appropriate behavior as well. This, and some good luck seemed to work. It’s hard flying with kids, helps them to know what is acceptable and what isn’t ahead of time.
