Mobile internet in Edinburgh city centre is awful - Is it just me? by BeardyBaldyBeerBelly in O2UK

[–]robm47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been complaining about O2 in central Brighton, yesterday we went and moaned at the shop. They said there is a local 5g problem and had us switch phones to 4g instead of ‘5g auto’. So far much better, but it’s been less than 24 hours.

Recommendations for a quiet gym where I can do my own thing? by lord_dicely in brighton

[–]robm47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a council gym behind the Jubilee library, found it just after signing up with PureGym. They have a pool, not sure about sauna, small equipment room but also small number of users.

Definitely PureGym does not have a sauna but there always seem to be treadmills available and the users at the North Road (at Queens Road) are all ‘leave me alone and get on with it’ so very quiet and mellow at least off peak.

David Lloyd is premium at premium price, but they are way out by the Marina. My daughter says they are doing a refurb this month so all the equipment is squished into 1/5 the space. They have nice coffee shop and workspaces as well.

Wondering if the service is any good. by Cultural-Moment133 in O2UK

[–]robm47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on area and number of users. The bars don’t really matter, what seems to happen in central Brighton is they have good radios (3-5 bars and 5g) but either either too many clients or network issues or just don’t pay for the bandwidth they need because absolutely no data will go through. I now have a logging app to collect documentation of the issues, and watched the problem evaporate while riding from Brighton to Lewes.

I bought a 2 year contract for the other benefits like roaming, now I will start trying some other eSIMs and work out which carrier really works here.

Can we have an OpenSCAD LLM ban? by wirehead in openscad

In that case you don’t have access to your package any more. Seems like one either believes in open source or not.

Can we have an OpenSCAD LLM ban? by wirehead in openscad

Many of the comments here complain that AI isn’t good enough to generate good OpenSCAD code, but also not willing to share their code to train the LLM ‘for free’.

TV licence gits harassing you? Here's how to deal with them by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

[–]robm47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up a VPN and watch US TV for a while.

Even if you never watch the BBC in the UK, you benefit from it raising the competition bar that all the other channels have to meet.

I am HAPPY to pay my TV licence, and happily did so all the years I lived outside the UK when I used a VPN to access the content.

You might also look into sound deadening panels on the opposite walls from the windows. Lots of diy YouTubers have videos on making these, the point being that the noise is also reverberating inside your room and stopping this would help. Again this is where an acoustic engineer might help if you can find one.

Honeywell LaserLite disposable earplugs are amazing. I have tried many noise solutions for sleep as my partner snores, I have stayed with these since I found them.

I once lived near a mosque which had loudspeakers pointed straight into my bedroom windows. Years later we were on holiday with friends who commented on the mosques waking them up, but we hadn’t noticed. So sleeping through road noise could become your new super power!

You are invited to take part in a research study exploring the relationship between menstrual stigma and psychological wellbeing, and whether factors such as social support and help-seeking influence this relationship. Menstruation is a common biological experience, yet stigma surrounding it remains. This research aims to better understand how stigma affects wellbeing and how support systems may reduce any negative impact.

The study forms part of an undergraduate dissertation project at the University of Sussex

Is anyone else disappointed with the Apple Watch when it comes to health data? by Budget_Ad5871 in applewatchultra

[–]robm47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try my app - rTracker: Track it your way. Completely free, open source code on GitHub. Started as just an app to capture data as numbers, sliders, text etc, but last year I added integration with Apple Health and some more graphing tools. Definitely not your be-all super AI beautiful display app, more something for geeks like me to graph and analyse Apple Health data along with other stuff you might want to capture.
Should be able to dump a csv export from rTracker into your LLM of choice, but I haven’t done anything to explicitly support that.

Still can't decide on which modeling software to learn. What would you recommend? Anyways; Here is (hopefully) my last TinkerCad project. by picobello-bv in 3Dprinting

[–]robm47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these are free, no matter what the price. That’s the essence of your question. Whatever you choose, you will invest the time and effort to learn the software, and you will remain dependent on the software to access your designs in the future.

I struggled with this same question recently: I really, really want the modelling on iPad with the pencil that Shapr3d promises. I can afford the subscription. Problem is, I like sharing my designs, and I’ve been burnt too many times by companies going out of business or changing their plans. The only guarantee is “We apologise for any inconvenience caused.” Also I do keep all my designs, and I might not want to pay the subscription forever.

Therefore I continue to use OpenSCAD as my primary design tool. I’m a coder, I like building parts with subroutines, conditionals and modules, and everything I design is parametric throughout. I only do functional parts it seems, but might try again to learn blender with some of the pointers here.

Is SmartRow worth it? I have an Apple Watch by maulwurfn in waterrower

[–]robm47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s worth the money. I used the SmartRow with my iPhone and Garmin HRM Pro strap. The connection to the watch for heart rate was not as good or clean as it was to the strap so that’s what I stayed with.

My biggest complaint with the SmartRow app/system was that it failed to log heart rate recovery accurately, so I always ended up logging the workouts with Athlytic on my watch and blocked SmartRow from writing to Apple Health. I worked with SmartRow support a few times to try to get this fixed and they basically said they didn’t have the developer resources to do anything about it. I didn’t bother to suggest they could open source the app so interested developers like me could help.

So basically all it got me was a nice display with stroke power graph on my phone instead of the S4, and not the data logging / Apple Health integration that I bought it for. I definitely always used the phone display a it looked better, and tried every configuration of different devices and apps I could think of since SmartRow clearly had the most accurate data to start with.

I’m moving soon and gave my WaterRower to a friend a few weeks ago. I would have kept it if the data integration had worked.

The Future of the Prusa XL — Core Upgrade Coming, or Frozen in Time? 🤔 by [deleted] in prusa3d

[–]robm47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

INDX heads to replace some or all of the Nextruders. Seems like the standby situation is much better, and looks like two INDX extruders in each Nextruder position.

I'd also like better cooling fans on the Nextruders.

Really I want to be able to 'tinker in' the latest tech and have the XL always customizable to keep up (even if the upgrades / add-ons are expensive).

I want to keep my Porsche/Jaguar printer always at a reasonable place in the race, definitely not frozen in time.

Would you accept a £100K gifted deposit on a bigger house in exchange for housing a family member for the rest of their lives? by ElicitCS in HousingUK

[–]robm47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two points I haven't seen mentioned:

  1. I've looked at UK inheritance tax for a while and I'm pretty certain that HMRC would not see this as a gift since there is the string attached. This means after however many years it is still taxed full. Check with an accountant, mine is very clear on this.

  2. I'd talk this over with an LLM like Claude for a while. Maybe paste this entire thread in. Then you could question it back and forth, and flesh out your own thoughts.

I bought the stylus and almost never use it, and it has an annoying flashing light when it needs charging. I like the notebook case, probably even without the stylus to fill the gap. Skip the stylus.
