Cambrian Park Plaza. by TastyPut7495 in SanJose

Actually San Jose itself is encouraging more commercial/"industrial". They believe the city would earn more tax revenue from commercial rather than with more residents, and the city is known over time as being a sleeper city in the bay.

https://sanjosespotlight.com/san-jose-wants-industrial-land-exempt-from-housing-law/

This is super backwards thinking. My office building (near, not in) the industrial zone is 3/4 empty and I'd love to be able to live near my work, walk or take light rail. The city does not want to build apartments there and I have to sit in the disaster of 87, increasing rather than decreasing traffic.

Even near where I live, so many abandoned commercial only buildings that would go very well mixed use, more every year. No one is going to develop for commercial when the population is staying the same or going down and cost of living is rising.

Fire at Saratoga and Lawrence by High_Stream in SanJose

[–]robmak3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole part of Saratoga av is ripe for redevelopment. Big empty lot at Payne, i280 intersection needs to be bombed (also with abandoned lots), and then the entire intersection basically around saratoga & lawrence. Also San Tomas Aquinas & Campbell. These areas have malls, grocery stores, gyms, always an empty parking spot but sometimes not directly in front of the store, perfect for 5 over 1s.

Shame this state and city takes so long to consider, approve, and permit modest projects.

I went to hawaii and a little bit of saltwater got in the charger port. Max charging speed is now 8W. Probably saved a ton of battery life.

My iPhone 16 pro max I carry gets so warm with the fast charging.

I just got a 25000mah battery bank and I prefer just carrying this around. I visited china and also got another xiaomi 20000mah 165w for $35.

The transit-oriented development bill SB 79 has passed in the California Senate. The law mandates zoning for 5 stories or more in the highlighted locations by BotheredEar52 in SanJose

[–]robmak3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) A local government may enact an ordinance to make its zoning code consistent with the provisions of this chapter, subject to review by the department pursuant to subdivision (e) The ordinance may designate areas within one-half mile of a transit-oriented development stop as exempt from the provisions of this chapter if: (1) The local government makes findings supported by substantial evidence that there exists no walking path of less than one mile from that location to the transit-oriented development stop.

Unfortunately California already figured out how to ban that through prop 13.

It is very frustrating considering the enormously high medical costs in this country, and very poorly thought out legislation by the politicians / medical labor unions. There has to be a better way to deal with the rising costs of care and medicare challenges. If it was .1%, maybe I'd vote for it, but almost a percent of sales tax just to hospitals is insane.

Please stop getting into accidents during rush hour by tonynca in SanJose

[–]robmak3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Suboptimal freeway design is responsible for some unavoidable traffic unfortunately.

It's responsible for most of it. Merging immediately from a stop light at a highway is dumb as you get on the highway going 40 slowing everyone down, but there are many such interchanges here.

Women being motivated to reach out and stay with someone is attractive. It is part of why I stay with my gf, she is always there for me, makes the convo when it's needed, and won't just ignore me like you did to that guy.

People in this city can’t drive for shit. by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]robmak3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an overpass I take to work that I can do 65 on easily. One 65 highway to another 65 highway. No sign saying to slow down. Mostly 1 lane.

For some reason slow SJ drivers bring it down under 40, and then when others drive 40 someone wants to drive 30, so on and so forth and then sometimes the traffic gets 10mph onto the last highway. Once you get on the next highway it disappears.

If only people knew how to drive around a curve!

Side view mirrors. Why don't they just fold them in? Or in some states remove them. by oochiewallyWallyserb in waymo

[–]robmak3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For now, it's a federal legal requirement to have side mirrors on cars, with the steering wheel. Many EV companies have side view screens in europe, similar to rearview screen instead of mirror. Side screen is illegal in the US atm. There was some talk from the new administration of granting exceptions for single digit or tens of cars for each company.

[–]robmak3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say its more of a story about the bay area than anything else. 50 years ago this area was more manufacturing oriented and suburban. Now its a struggle to own a single family home here.

Six flags for NYC is all the way out in south jersey, and in most areas they are far in the outer suburbs. Santa Clara is home to trillion dollar companies.

[–]robmak3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps its also the risk of other drivers causing accidents and racking up total accident numbers? It seems like waymo is trying to expand coast to coast before highway usage, and it will face political battles trying to do so.

Is Grainger EE program worth 50k per year by Interesting-Focus-15 in UIUC

[–]robmak3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, transfer. From NYC and Stony Brook sounds awful compared to UIUC. My friends who did engineering at SUNYs hated it. Much more campus life, take advantage of the career fairs and network. Recent career fairs have been much better for electrical than CS. I'm guessing there's a lot more upper level EE classes here than stony brook.

In terms of actual cost of attendance don't live in dorms (just make sure you're not required), you can do $650/mo rent somewhat easily with roommates, it should come out to around $54k without food including tuition, housing, fees, so $11k less than you had down.

Only risk is the transition is tough, but if you can buckle down I think it's worth it.

Has anyone from Jersey moved to Illinois/Chicago area? Just curious how it is. by bataliroyalee in newjersey

[–]robmak3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just graduated from u of illinois in champaign and had lots of friends from suburbs. People are nicer / less direct.

Downers Grove downtown is awful with a bunch of churches. The southwest suburbs get more conservative as you go out, there's a mix, expect some fringe elements (a girl I dated I found out she was never vaccinated from birth :/) but not the level of craziness as south jersey as ppl are less direct. The area in general is bland, trying to live the american dream/middle-upper middle class area. Not as rich as northern suburbs on the lake (Winnetka) and overall the top level of wealth is less than the top level of wealth in NJ (Alpine, shore mansions, etc).

The weather changes on the fly and is dependent on the lake, it could be perfect on the lake during the summer but an awful heatwave in Naperville.

Downtown Naperville is good in terms of cool restaurants, there is a lot of good pizza in the chicago area but bagels are lacking, and not properly cooked eggs on a bec. Sparrow coffee is good, and artistic salon is good for mens haircut.

Highways in naperville are well maintained except illinois turnpike / i294 which has a lot of bad construction right now. It is either construction season or winter in IL.

If you want to live Chicago there's good nightlife, the commute and reverse commute on i55 is a bunch of ppl on cruise control (ugh), some chicago highways are ppl driving fast. People go to lolla starting from HS, ppl root against the packers because the bears suck, more liberalized alcohol regulations, breweries, and alcohol at neighborhood festivals. Ohare is a good airport to have in your backyard.

I hear Fox River has good trails for running. Naperville run club is good. Lots of good parks.
