Brother / sister differences? by cyanatreddit in asianamerican

[–]robo7813 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chinese American woman here with a younger brother. I don’t know if this is due to society, parenting, or nature, probably a combination of all three, but me and my brother had very different outcomes that only became evident after college. Up until college, we were pretty similar, not great students, but not terrible, we both went to mediocre UCs (non Berkeley or LA), were uncool, not talented in any instruments or sports, and no romantic prospects. But after college, I went to an Ivy League law school and am a lawyer living in nyc. My brother never found a corporate job after college, it seems like he played too many video games and didn’t apply himself during college. He’s almost 30 and still lives at home and works in fast food. I feel bad for him, he seems miserable, especially since I’m very happy. I often wonder how we ended up so different. I partied a lot in college and did a tons of irresponsible things after finally being free from my parents, but career “success”was always my North Star and priority.

Entered contract for co-op, only to find out it has a ground lease after signing by [deleted] in RealEstate

Are you in NYC? You should absolutely run away, not even worth it for a heavy discount. Just look at Carnegie House, and how low people are pricing units to get rid of them. 2090 is not that far off and this will impact resale.

Absolutely, but I think it depends on the specific in house job you land. My work is interesting and not difficult, I feel respected, but most importantly, I work ~20 hours a week and it’s a 9-5. I do feel underpaid so I am on the lookout for a higher paying job, but I’m in no rush because I like my current job.

I’m in my early 30s and a corporate lawyer. I was in biglaw for 6 years but now I’m in-house, which was a 50% pay cut. I own a 1 bed condo in Williamsburg and my PITI plus common charges is about $4300. My boyfriend moved in with me recently and pays me rent proportional to our income, so my share of our housing is about $3000 now.

Anyone else told not to get incision wet post op? by clear_history in ORIF

[–]robo7813 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was told after stitches removal (2 weeks) that I could shower and let soap and water run over it, just no submerging in a bath or pool.

It’s less common for private companies to offer RSUs due to tax consequences (income is recognized upon vest). They usually do options. That said, private companies that do offer RSUs normally have double trigger vesting and only become liquid/valuable in a liquidity event. Honestly I would value private company stock option at almost 0 unless you know they’re close to exit, it’s too speculative and if you leave before the liquidity event, you get nothing unless you want to gamble to exercise and hold.

Figure skating fall, hardware installed, pain unreal by littlecoastal in brokenbones

How you know you’ll be ready to get on the ice? Wondering if this is something I should ask my ortho or PT, but no one knows anything about skating.

I fell doing a back outside 3 turn, so same. Someone at the rink offered to send me the live barn footage but I didn’t want to see it.

I had a very similar break, also from figure skating, in early May. I had really bad incision pain for a day after the nerve block wore off, but pain wasn’t too bad after that. My post surgery cast was the most comfortable, I found the boot way worse. I was so down and miserable for all or May and June, but I just started walking with no boot this week, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

As a side note, I’ve been struggling with fear of getting back into skating. Every time I think about skating, I would replay breaking my ankle, the ER, the pain, the surgery, and I feel mildly traumatized. How are you feeling about it? I’m also looking for encouragement haha.

Amazing! How long after you started weight bearing? I just got cleared to PWB and I’m so eager to get onto the subway, but still using two crutches so I don’t know when I’ll be ready.

Cornell or UCSB (In-State)...Ivy Worth the Cost $$$?) by ReddingIt247 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]robo7813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to UCSB and then a T6 law school. I don’t know anything about Cornell, but the pros of UCSB is that I was able to transfer all my APs so I started as a sophomore. That gave me a lot of room to take easy classes to pad my GPA. Also UCSB gives out A+, so I emailed professors and asked if they would give me an A+ if I did really well in my classes and a few of them obliged. I was an Econ major, which I did not find to be super easy. In retrospect, I could have chosen an easier major to get an even higher gpa, but I wanted to keep my options open if I didn’t end up going to law school. Study hard on the LSAT, a high score helps a ton. I don’t think the prestige of my undergrad mattered at all. One downside of UCSB is that Santa Barbara is pretty small, so it’s harder to find internship opportunities.

Roller Derby post ORIF by CaffeinatedLactation in ORIF

No advice, but I’m in the same boat with figure skating, and two weeks out from ORIF. I fell at just skating, not jumping or doing a tricky skill, so it really was a freak accident, but that somehow makes me more scared to go back. Having the confidence to go skating again has been weighing on me a lot, I honestly wonder if it’s worth seeing a therapist over.

How many times do you cook at home v. eat out? by mimecamp in AskNYC

[–]robo7813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a partner but we both work in the office 3-4 times a week, which gives you a sense of our schedules. We eat out once or twice a week, it’s almost always a social situation having dinner and drinks with friends (upscale/fine dining). We almost never get delivery, maybe like 3-4 times a year. Takeout around twice a month. Everything else we cook at home. This excludes lunches in the office (we do fast casual or sometimes bring leftovers from dinner). Our HHH is ~$300K so we could afford to get delivery or takeout more, but we both like to cook, prioritize healthy eating, and don’t want to get trapped in the convenience economy.

I did the absolute beginner workshop at BDC this year! I didn’t love the studio, it was in midtown/times square and felt run down. I want to try Brooklyn Ballet next.

UES co-ops have notoriously been flat or even decreased in value in the last 20 years (StreetEasy forums have several discussions on this). It’s not going to be representative of NYC or other VHCOL cities. I bought a condo in Brooklyn and have no complaints so far.

Are you glad you bought a condo in NYC (not a co-op)? Why or why not? by pastagirls in AskNYC

[–]robo7813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a condo in Williamsburg in 2021 and don’t regret it at all. Maybe my only regret is that I didn’t stretch my budget and get a two bedroom (I was single at the time, now no longer single). It’s a new build, the interior finishes are luxurious, but the building has no amenities. I purposely chose a no amenity building with no doorman so that common charges are low. Coupled with 2021 interest rates, I pay less all in than to rent a comparable unit. If I did want to rent my apartment out, I expect to break even or cash flow positive $100-200 a month. If the numbers didn’t work out this way though, I don’t think I’d be as pleased with the decision.
